  • Long-term shear behavior of the rock discontinuities should be analyzed and its stability should be evaluated to ensure the long-term stability of a high-level radioactive waste disposal repository. The long-term shear behavior of the discontinuities can be modeled with creep and RSF models. The shear creep test, velocity step test, and slide-hold-slide test can be performed to determine their model parameters or analyze the shear behavior by experiments under various conditions. Testing apparatuses for direct shear, triaxial compression, and biaxial shear were mainly used and improved to reproduce the thermo-hydro-mechanical conditions of local bedrock, and it was confirmed that the shear behavior could vary. In order to design a high-level radioactive waste disposal site in Korea, the long-term behavior of rock discontinuities should be investigated in consideration of rock types, thermo-hydro-mechanical conditions, metamorphism, and restoration of shear resistance.

  • This paper summarizes the results of a study which uses the recently developed Optical Profile Microscopy technique (Dove and Frost, 1996) as the basis for investigating the role of geomembrane surface roughness on the shear strength of goomembrane/geotextile interfaces. The results show that interface friction can be quantitatively related to the surface roughness of the geomembrane. The peak and residual interface strengths increase dramatically through the use of textured geomembranes as opposed to smooth geomembranes. For the smooth geomembranes, the sliding of the geotextile is the main shear mechanism. For the textured geomembranes, the peak interface strength is mainly mobilized through the micro-texture of the geomembrane, however, the residual interface strength is primarily attributed to macro scale surface roughness which pulls out and breaks the filaments from the geotextile. The results of this study can be extended to the other interfaces such as joints in rock mass, and also can be used to provide a quantitative framework that can lead to a significantly improved basis for the selection and design of geotextiles and geomembranes in direct contact.

  • This study conducted direct shear test on about 290 sorts of materials such as sandy soil, clayey soil and gravely soil to present proper standard on shear strength of soil. Shear strength of soil in large scale tends to show that angle of internal friction increases as sand contents grow and it ranges $23.5^{\circ}{\sim}34.9^{\circ}C$ with cohesion of 2.0 kPa~15.7 kPa. Elastic modulus was visibly distinct by load, and which increased approximately 80% as vertical load grows. Angle of internal friction arranging $15.0^{\circ}{\sim}28.6^{\circ}$ on clayey soil decreased as clay contents rises and cohesion increase in regular scale. Elastic modulus tends to increase initial elastic modulus with almost same growing rate. While angle of internal friction on gravely soil indicates $29.9^{\circ}{\sim}36.7^{\circ}$ which hardly shows distinctive features. According to test in detail, cohesion of SW (well-graded sand), SP (poorly-graded sand), SC (clayey sand) and SM (silty sand) indicates value by 94%, 78% and 59% comparing to SC, SW and SP respectively. Angle of internal friction of ML (low-liquid limit silt) and CL (low-liquid limit clay) appears almost same features, and MH (high-liquid limit silt) despite of 88% value of ML. Cohesion among them varies with similar growing rate.

  • This thesis is an experimental research of shear behavioral characteristics and shear behavioral coefficient of weathered residual soil which is mostly contained in soil of Korea. Using the weathered residual soil from mountain near Kangwon National University, this experimental research were contained the physical properties of sample in term of the basic test method such as specific gravity, plastic and liquid limit, grain-size distribution, density and water content. Experimental results obtained from direct shear test sand triaxial compression tests show that according to step loading, linear strain and linear stress increase continually and angle of internal friction decreases just little according to incresing of water content in case of ignoring the cohesion, and angle of internal friction appears the maximum angle near a optimum moisture content in case of considering the cohesion.

  • It is well known all much information for evaluation on possibility of liquefaction and lateral flow for sand over the world. Recently, it is started to be known that liquefaction happens on non-plastic silt, too. But cyclic and post-cyclic characteristics for non-plastic silt is a few familiar to the world. Specially, it is not aware of the estimating method for lateral flow on non-plastic silt. The main purpose in this paper is to propose the evaluation for liquefaction and lateral flow on non-plastic silt. The method used in this research is that possibility for liquefaction on non-plastic silt was evaluated with cyclic direct simple shear test, and then residental strength was estimated with static shear test. Through the test results liquefaction on non-plastic silt is well not happened but strength decreases rapidly with increasing shear stress. With the proposed method it can be evaluated possibility of liquefaction and propose lateral flow.

  • Three types of glass woven fabrics (plain, balanced twill, and unbalanced twill) having various sample sizes and aspect ratios were tested using the bias-extension tests. Real-time deformation images, force, and displacement data were collected. For the bias-extension test, the shear angle of the fabrics from the equation based on the crosshead displacement and fabric size was compared with direct manual measurements of the warp and weft angles as well as the optical measurement software. To determine the shear force, an analytical equation was introduced considering the kinematics of the bias-extension test. The obtained shear behaviors were further compared with the results by the trellis-frame test. The optical measurement methods showed that the mathematical method was reasonable before the shear angle of the fabrics reaches $30^{\circ}$ in the bias-extension tests. Also, the bias-extension test gave consistent behaviors with the trellis-frame test only for isotropic and homogeneous fabrics such as balanced plain and twill weaves.

  • Structural performance and durability of ultra high performance concrete could demonstrate optimal performance when unity was kept. Accordingly, it is necessary to involve the characteristics and quantitative surface treatment at the same time in order to retain oneness of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete(UHPC) according to construction joint occurrence. Therefore, this study derives a reasonable surface treatment method in a material's point of view through the shear adhesion performance evaluation according to the construction joints surface processing method as a part for securing the adhesion performance of the construction joints when casting UHPC. 180 MPa of required average strength was used for mix of UHPC and surface treatment method was set to totally 7 level that MN, GR-10-0, GR-20-0, GR-30-0, SH-30-5, SH-30-10. After the specimen were manufactured to a size of $150{\times}150{\times}150mm$, Direct shear test was performed to evaluate the shear adhesion strength. As a result, it was confirmed that the adhesion performance was improved when executing a surface treatment for the construction joint interface and standard of failure mode of specimen was over Type C. Also, It was considered that interface of cross section and depth of concavo-convex should be concerned.

  • This paper investigated the structural capacity of the CT shear connectors, which is a kind of the perfobond rib and functions as an anchor transferring the tension force in the joint between a composite PHC wall pile and a bottom slab. The direct pull-out test was performed for various specimens. From failure modes and load-displacement curves, it was found that transverse rebars should be placed to holes in a web to restrict pull-out failure of CT shear connectors. The results of additional tests for specimens with transverse rebars and various support lengths indicated that all specimens were failed by the tension failure of PHC pile before pull-out failure of CT shear connector and concrete pull-out failure. Thus, the CT shear connector could endure the tension force between the PHC wall pile and the bottom slab.

  • In this study, Generally sandbag was used to reinforce slope or restore levee by using the in-situ material. To increase shear strength of sandbag, the Velcro system was effective for geosynthetic interface and make up for the weakness of shear strength between sandbag to sandbag. In this study, shear properties of geosynthetic-geosynthetic and geosynthetic-soil were evaluated from large scale direct shear tests. The cohesion and the angle of internal friction of each interface was evaluated. And laboratory model tests were performed to compare strength of reinforcement with strength of none reinforcement. As a result of this study, the cohesion and the angle of internal friction of each interface was increased, especially the cohesion was increased more than the angle of internal friction. Also according to the result of model test, the bearing capacity was increased by 20%.
