  • The output characteristics of a ceramic Nd:YAC laser pumped by a fiber-coupled laser diode was investigated. An efficiency and a slope efficiency of 33.8 % and 39.3 % respectively were obtained, under an output coupler reflectance of 90.4 %. The laser power has decreased suddenly due to the thermal tensing effect more than 6 W pumping powers.

  • We propose a diode-pumped cesium laser using frequency locking of a pump laser that can effectively increase the maximum output power of the cesium laser. We simultaneously monitored the absorption spectrum of cesium and the laser output power, and the frequency of pump laser was locked at the center of the $D_2$ absorption line of the cesium atom to obtain an effective gain enhancement. Using this scheme, we have achieved output power increase of ~0.1 W compared to when frequency locking was not applied. Furthermore, by optimizing the temperature of the cesium cell and the reflectivity of the output coupler, we successfully achieved an output power of 1.4 W using the pump power of 2.9 W, providing a slope efficiency of 61.5% and optical-to-optical efficiency of 49%.

  • The output characteristics of a laser-diode pumped electrooptic Q-switched Nd:YAG ceramic laser were investigated. The output energy of a Q-switched Nd:YAG ceramic laser was optimized under an output coupler reflectivity of 77%, a laser-diode pulse width of $1,000\;{\mu}s$, and a delay time of $985\;{\mu}s$. The output energy of the Q-switched pulse was measured to be 0.35 mJ with a pulse width of 4 ns under a pump energy of 17.9 mJ. The output efficiency and the peak power were 1.9% and 87.5 kW, respectively.

  • The energy transfer of a laser-diode-pumped Nd : S-VAP laser was detected by the photoacoustic technique using a PZT detector. The photoacoustic method suggests an effectvie approach to understand the energy transfer mechanism of the laser cavity, and to find out the optimum output coupler of the oscillator with comparative ease.

  • A high power diode-array-pumped slab Nd:YAG laser is described. The resonator consists of three mirrors in folded geometry. The laser is operated in acousto-optic Q-switching mode and intracavity frequency doubling is tried. We demonstrate that the laser exhibits frequency doubling efficiency of ∼60% with a type I LBO crystal.

  • Lasing modes of laser-diode-pumped fiber grating lasers are analyzed by coupled-mode theory. First, a power series solution of the coupled-mode equations is derived under the assumption of an exponentially-decreasing longitudinal modal gain profile for a laser-diode-pumped grating section, followed by determination of the transfer matrix for such a section. Based on these results, an eigenvalue equation for oscillation is then derived and solved numerically for the lasing modes of uniform and phase-shifted fiber grating lasers. Comparisons made with the uniform-gain results indicate that, surprisingly, the lasing mode characteristics are not as significantly altered as might be expected in most cases, even for a highly nonuniform gain profile. In the case of a phase-shifted grating, the phase-shift position appears to have a much greater impact on determining the threshold gain, the modal field distribution, and the front-to-back output power ratio.

  • The heat distribution in crystals in a 2-㎛ acousto-optic Q-switched Tm:LuAG laser pumped by pulsed-laser-diode (pulsed-LD) intermittent-pumping technology was analyzed using COMSOL software. The thermal lensing effect of the Tm:LuAG crystal can be mitigated by pulsed-LD intermittent-pumping techniques. An experimental setup using this kind of approach achieved maximum output energy of 8.31 mJ, minimum pulse width of 101.9 ns, and highest peak power of 81.55 kW, reached at a Q-switched repetition rate of 200 Hz. It offers significant improvement of performance of the output laser beam, compared to pulsed-LD double-ended pumping technology at the same repetition rate.

  • A fiber-coupled laser-diode pumped ceramic Nd:YAG laser for compensating the thermal tensing effect was developed. The thermal tensing effect was compensated using a convex lens, which was 25 mm away from the laser rod, with a focal length of 30 mm and an effective clear aperture of 22 mm. Without a compensator, the laser output power decreased suddenly above a pump power of 6 W. Using a compensator, the laser output power increased linearly according to the pump power. The beam propagation factor $M^{2}$ was 2.4 under a pump power of 12 W.
