  • X-ray device used in the diagnosis has made possible to have more effective and accurate diagnosis, powered by the development of various devices. Based on this, X-ray device has become the most basic and essential diagnostic equipment in clinical medicine. At present, in the image acquisition field using X-ray, the use of Digital radiography which is useful in the acquisition time reduction and transfer of images and is possible to have the dose reduction has expanded. With the structure using one detector, this DR device has disadvantages in that it needs structural changes unlike existing X-ray and the detector should be moved to the desired position depending on the shooting location. Therefore, in this study, using BLDC(Brushless direct current) motor and PID(Proportional integral differential) control method, the automatic control system of 3-axis which is upward and downward, left and right and rotation of detector where having the most movement in DR was designed and produced and its performance was evaluated.

  • This study confirmed the usefulness of the copper filter according to the mode change by comparing and analyzing the energy change according to the application of the copper filter and the change in effective dose and image quality according to the distance to the subject in the DR(Digital Radiography) system. The average energy increased when the copper filter was applied and the reduction rate by 50% of mAs was increased as the thickness of the copper filter increased according to the application of the 10 kVp rule in AEC mode. The effective dose decreased as the thickness increased when the copper filter was applied in AEC(Automatic Exposure Control) mode and manual mode according to the application of the 10 kVp rule, and the decrease rate decreased with increasing 10 kVp increments. As a result of analyzing the dicom images for AEC mode and manual mode with Image J. the PSNR(Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) values were approximate values of less than 30 dB for each mode and for each copper filter thickness. When the copper filter was applied, the average energy increased, so when the 10 kVp rule was applied, the mAs for each mode could be reduced, and the effective dose could also be reduced. However, as the distance and tube voltage increased, the reduction rate of mAs decreased, and the quality of the image was found to decrease when the copper filter was applied, but there was no difference in quality of the image when the copper filter thickness increased.

  • Current digital radiographic systems are rapidly growing in clinical applications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of computed radiography (CR) and digital radiography (DR) at different tube voltages in the detection of simulated chest lesions. Patterns of simulated interstitial lung disease, incipient infiltration, and nodules were superimposed over an anthropomorphic chest phantom. A simulated chest phantom radiograph was obtained with CR and DR at different tube voltages (70 kV, 90 kV, and 120 kV). A total of 18,000 observations were analyzed using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The detection of all lesions showed higher $A_z$ values at 70 kV than 120 kV with CR. For the DR, mean $A_z$ values at 70 kV were higher than other tube voltages not all lesions but for micro-nodule interstitial lung disease, linear interstitial lung disease, and incipient infiltration. Based on these results, a clinical study should be performed to judge the use of suitable tube voltage according to the type of detector system and lesions.

  • Recently, interests and utilization on Computed Radiography(CR) and Digital Radiography(DR) tends to increase owing to an introduction of Picture Archiving and Communication System(PACS) and an accuracy control of special medical equipment for a breast imaging examination. This study was intended to compare and analyze a detector's imaging quality by each system to be used for the breast imaging examination by using ACR Phantom used at the accuracy control. As an evaluation method, a significance and reliability of image's value using the ACR Phantom was analyzed by using SPSS program. The results are followed. 1. For the fiber, there was 3.9 score in Screen-Film, 4.2 score in CR($50{\mu}m$), 3.2 score in CR($100{\mu}m$), and 4.2 score in DR. There was the high score in the order of CR($50{\mu}m$), DR, Screen-Film, and CR($100{\mu}m$)(P<0.05). 2. For the calcification, there was 2.7 score in Screen-Film, 2.5 score in CR($50{\mu}m$), 2.0 score in CR($100{\mu}m$), and 2.9 score in DR. There was the high score in the order of DR, Screen-Film, CR($50{\mu}m$), and CR($100{\mu}m$).(0.025(P<0.05). 3. For Mass, there was 3.8 score in Screen-Film, 3.8 score in CR($50{\mu}m$), 3.6 score in CR($100{\mu}m$), and 4.5 score in DR. There was the high score in the order of DR, CR($50{\mu}m$), Screen-Film, and CR($100{\mu}m$) (P<0.1). 4. As the total score, there was 10.4 score in Screen-Film, 10.6 score in CR($50{\mu}m$), 8.7 score in CR($100{\mu}m$), and 11.3 score in DR. There was the high score in the order of DR, $CR(50{\mu}m$), Screen-Film, and $CR(100{\mu}m$). As shown in the above results, it can be known that DR and Screen-Film System has higher image quality than CR. But, DR has unstability caused by element, and Screen-Film has the low image quality caused by artifact as disadvantages. When Dual-Side CR($50{\mu}m$) was used among CR systems which had the problem of low image quality, it was indicated that there was no difference with Screen-Film System. Because the radiation imaging examination tends to become digitalized, each system for the breast imaging examination will need to be developed and supplemented.

  • DR has had an important fact not only in the department of radiology but also in productivity or work efficiency of a whole hospital. The environment of DR has more various parameter than CR, so it is able to supply high quality of medical services. The current environment of radiology department in each hospital has been changed from Film-Screen system to DR through Full-PACS. This hospital which uses Full-PACS became to study the proper condition of CR and DDR and how the image quality of them is expressed among general photographing systems in the DR environment. From this experiment, the image quality of DDR is better than CR under the same exposure condition. And in the DDR system, the score of image which uses AEC is a little higher than the score which doesn't use it. Especially it can be known that the function of AEC of DDR is useful to improve the image quality in the part of skull and chest. (The function of AEC : It is the tool that detects the ionized current of x-ray which goes through objects with using the ion chamber which is in the detector. Also it controls the examination of X-ray when the proper density is reached.) Because the proper degree of density can be represented by this system, the photographing can be taken much easily without consideration of the exposure condition with the thickness of various objects. From the result of this experiment, it can be known that the selection of proper exposure condition plays an important rule to gain good Image Quality. More researches will be necessary about DDR system which has potential ability in the future.

  • Antiscatter grids are widely used in radiography to remove scattered X-rays and thus improve the image contrast. However, the use of grids makes moir$\acute{e}$ artifact in the digital image, and this can be a critical reason for a mistaken diagnosis. In this paper, we examined that moire artifacts are how to relate with grid frequency, pixel pitch and grid rotation angle. To experiment we prepared 6 grids having different line frequencies (4.0 to 8.5lines/mm) and tested with a DR imager having a $139{\mu}m{\times}139{\mu}m$ pixel size. In the result of this experiment, we could get data about moir$\acute{e}$ artifact that could be make solution to remove the line artifact for the successful use of the grid in digital radiography. The acquired data and theory through this experiment, are expected to make contribution to the elimination of moir$\acute{e}$ artifact in the DR system.

  • To evaluate the performance of the digital radiography(DR) system developed in our group, the modulation transfer function(MTF) was measured and compared with that of an analog X- ray detector, film/screen system. The DR system has an amorphous selenium(a-Se) layer vacuum-evaporated on a TFT flat panel detector. The speed class 400 film/screen (Fuji) system has been being used in the clinical field as analog X-ray detectors. Both the square wave and slit method were used to evaluate their MTF. The square method was applied to both film/screen and the DR system. The slit method, however, was applied to only DR system. The full-width half maximum resolution of film/screen was 357${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$(1.4 lp/mm at 50% spatial frequency), and the resolution of DR was limited to 200${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$(2.5 lp/mm at 30%). These results indicate the measured resolution limitations approximate to the pixel pitch, 139 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of TFT. The MTF of DR is higher than that of film/screen by the factor of 1.785. It is proved that our a-Se based DR system has potential usefulness in the clinical field.

  • Digital radiation inspection equipment is a medical device that deals with human life and requires stability and high reliability. However, this system is currently the most advanced technology and the domestic market is almost occupied by European products including Japan. Therefore, research and development are needed not only to replace domestic medical devices, which are largely dependent on expensive imported products, but also to develop more economical and user-oriented products that are easy to operate and produce devices that lead to accurate diagnosis. In particular, among the digital X-ray systems, the motor driving technology and the mechatronics technology related to the development of mechanical devices have matured to some extent in Korea. In this paper, selection of AC servomotor for digital radiation inspection suitable for imaging purpose, and application of conversion device and control method to check performance and improve problems.

  • Digital radiography (DR) images are corrupted by the additive noise, and also distorted by system impulse response. These unwanted phenomena are obstacles to obtain the desired image. To recover the original image, we applied multiscale Wiener filters in wavelet domain for DR images. The multiscale Wiener filter is first proposed by Chen for the restoration of fractal signals which are distorted by the system impulse response and additive noise. In this paper, we extended the multiscale Wiener filter to the two dimensional data. To compare the performance of ours with others, some simulations are given for a couple of wavelet filters with different wavelet levels, system impulse reponses and various noise power. When the addive noise powers are between 20-32 dB, the signal to noise ratio(SNR) of the proposed system is 0.5-2.0 dB better than that of the traditional Wiener filter method.
