  • Environmental conditions can influence the morphology of local biota through phenotypic plasticity or local adaptation. Macroalgal morphologies are often associated with wave-exposure conditions. We investigated the relationship between morphology and wave exposure in two common endemic subtidal macroalgae, Carpophyllum angustifolium and C. maschalocarpum, from the East Cape of New Zealand. Morphological comparisons were made between individuals from two sites and four different wave-exposure zones, as defined by fetch and barnacle composition. Of the seven morphological traits measured in C. angustifolium, only total length varied, and individuals were longer in more wave-exposed environments between the two exposure zones where the species were found. In contrast, total length, stipe thickness and vesicle presence all varied significantly between exposure zones in C. maschalocarpum. C. maschalocarpum specimens were shorter with thinner stipes, and fewer individuals had vesicles in the more wave-exposed zones. Morphological traits of both species also varied between sites, suggesting that other influences are important for determining species morphology. Further study is needed to investigate the role of phenotypic plasticity and genetic variability for driving morphological variation in C. angustifolium and C. maschalocarpum.

  • Following previous work carried out in Building Research Institute in Japan, finite element analyses of conceptual column designs are performed in this paper. The effectiveness of the numerical model is evaluated by experimental tests and parametric studies are conducted to determine influential factors in conceptual column designs. First, three different column designs are analysed: bonded, un-bonded, and un-bonded with additional reinforcing bars. The load-displacement curves and cracking patterns in concrete are obtained and compared with experimental ones. The comparisons indicate that the finite element model is able to reflect the experimental results closely. Both numerical and experimental results show that, the introduction of un-bonded zones in a column end can reduce cracking strains, accordingly reduce the stiffness and strength as well; the addition of extra reinforcement in the un-bonded zones can offset the losses of the stiffness and strength. To decide the proper length of the un-bonded zones and the sufficient amount of the additional reinforcing bars, parametric studies are carried out on their influences. It has been found that the stiffness of un-bonded designs slightly decreases with increasing the length of the un-bonded zones and increases with the size of the additional reinforcing bars.

  • Access-control of hazard zone in a steel manufacturing industry is studied in terms of safety management. Based on the results of risk evaluation for hazard zone, three risk zones with low, middle and high level are categorized. These zones have different color door and locking shape depending on their risk levels. At the high level, red door and key-based locking system are employed to accessed-controled path. Furthermore, tagout, lockout, interlock system for emergency stop, warning and flashing are also introduced. New standardized procedure of access-control for various hazard zones, which could help to greatly contribute to the prevention of accidents in advance, is proposed considering the risk level and the condition of given hazard zones. The standardized procedure of access-management suggested in this study will take an effective role as one of safety guide lines for hazardous workshop of manufacturing industries.

  • The spatial aggregation of data, in transportation and other planning processes, is an important theoretical consideration because the results of any analysis are not entirely independent of the delineation of zones. Moreover, using a different spatial aggregation may lead to different, and sometimes contradictory conclusions. Two criteria have been considered as important in designing zone systems. They are scale and aggregation. The scale problem arises because of uncertainty about the number of zones needed for a study and the aggregation problem arises because of uncertainty about how the data are to be aggregated to from a given scale problem. In a transportation study, especially in the design of traffic analysis zone(TAZ), the scale problem is directly related to the number dof zones and the aggregation problem involves spatial clustering, meeting the general requirements of forming the zones system such as equal traffic generation, convexity, and the consistency with the political boundary. In this study, first, the comparative study of delineating spatial units has been given. Second, a FORTRAN-based heuristic algorithm for designing TAZ based on socio-economic data has been developed and applied to the Korean peninsula containing 132 micro parcels. The vector type ARC/INFO GIS topological data mosel has been used to provise the adjacency information between parcels. The results, however, leave some to be desired in order to overcome such problems as non-convexity of the agglomerated TAZ system and/or uneven traffic phenomenon for each TAZ.

  • This study set out to identify problems with amphibian habitation by the wetland types and improve their habitation environment in urban forest wetlands, thus creating a habitat for amphibians. Study site include forest swamps in Jatjul Park as well as Yeoji neighborhood Park in Guro-gu, and in Choansan neighborhood Park in Dobong-gu. The forest swamp in Jatjul Park gets its water from Mt. Maebong and it is a former escalated farmland-turned wetland. The swamp area is $2,500m^2$, a forest zone and a landscape planting site are 83.27% and 6.70% each. Target species Seoul pond frogs are inseparable from rice fields because they live in a short radius of and lay eggs in or near paddy fields, and Rana nigromaculata have similarities with Rana plancyi chosenica in choosing their habitats. There was need for paths that would lead to other paths so amphibians would spread to other parts of the forest and for measures to secure open water. Modifying a variety of routes for water, human and animals along with building a buffer to keep the core habitation zones were required. The forest swamp in Yeonji neighborhood Park used to be a water reservoir on the foot of Mt. Gunji. The swamp area is $1,980m^2$, a forest zone and farmland account for 80.61% and 4.88% each. Non-point pollutants from upstream along run into the subject forest marsh, bare ground on the around swamp and steep stone embankments obstructed amphibians. Target species was Bufo gargarizans that live in forests and edges of hills and spawn in deep water. The forest swamp in Choansan neighborhood Park gets its water from Mt. Choan and it is close to its water source that it is a mountain stream forest wetland. The basin and the swamp are $35,240m^2$ and $250m^2$ in size respectively. A forest zone accounts for 90.20%, high stone embankments laid in refurbishing the valley obstruct amphibians and there is water shortage in times of droughts. Target species were Rana coreana, Rana dybowskii and Hynobius leechii that live in mountain valleys, streams and wetlands and lay eggs in forest marshes and rocks in valleys. Looking into the three swamps of amphibian habitation, I came to conclusions that those wetlands were suitable for their amphibians but man-made facilities blocked their corridors leading to other corridors and even killed off target species in some parts of those swamps by destroying those parts. Amphibians live in water, on ground and underground at different stages of life. Hence, we should take this fact into consideration when planning their habitats and design core habitation zones, buffers zone and use zones accordingly. Buffer zones ought to be between core habitation zones and surrounding trees. Aiming at protecting core habitation zones, buffers should be in harmony with habitation zones. Use zones should be minimized in size and not in direct contact with core habitation zones.

  • The coast is important area to set up policies in aspects of environmental, international and developing of resources. The researches and surveying have been conducted by many different organizations according to their own purposes. So the fundamental researches and surveying of Korean coastal area haven't been completed. For that reason, we can't use the datum to apply for different cases. In this paper, Ive studied about our current situations and the need of surveying. For a effective research methods, we suggest dividing research areas into zones and dividing them into smaller zones, And we divide priority of research and ranging of surveying classes by grading them depending on the importance.

  • Census data are usually provided at an aggregated level. However, the aggregated data are essentially arbitrary geographical areas. The areal units used to report census data have no natural or meaningful geographical identity. Unfortunately, this means that analyses of these area aggregations may be conditional upon the set of zones, which are presented. This effect is known as the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) and has two related aspects. First, scale effect is the variation in numerical results that occurs due to the number of zones used in an analysis. Second, results may also differ between different ways of aggregating exactly the same data to the same scale; this may be called the aggregation effect (Openshaw, 1984). This study aims to provide a practical tool for the study of MAUP. I have created a set of 91 areal units based on 280 basic units in Nonhyun-2 dong to solve zoning problem and scale problem. We can easily recognize the importance of areal classification as statistics were different according to areal classification.

  • This study was conducted to estimate annual reference evapotranspiration (ET0) for the agro-climatic zones for rice paddy fields in South Korea between 1980 and 2015. The daily ET0 was estimated by applying the Penman-Monteith method to meteorological data from 61 weather stations provided by Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA). The average of annual ET0 from 1980 to 2015 was 1334.1±33.89 mm. The ET0 was the highest at the Southern Coastal Zone due to their higher air temperature and lower relative humidity. The ET0 had significantly increased with 2.81 mm/yr for the whole zones over 36 years. However, the change rate of it was different among agro-climatic zones. The annual ET0 highly increased in central zones and eastern coastal zones. In terms of correlation coefficient, the temporal change of the annual ET0 was closely related to variations of four meteorological factors (i.e., mean, minimum temperatures, sunshine duration, and relative humidity). The results demonstrated that whole Korean agro-climatic zones have been undergoing a significant change in the annual ET0 for the last 36 years. Understanding the spatial pattern and the long-term variation of the annual ET0 associated with global warming would be useful to improve crop and water resource managements at each agro-climatic zone of South Korea.

  • This study aims to establish the integrated system of national protected areas by identifying OECMs which are not officially recognized as protected areas, but effectively and enduringly deliver the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem service to expand them up to the level recommended by the international community. In order to identify them, candidates for OECMs were listed and it was developed a three-step systematic screening tool based on preconditions, essential characteristics, and sustainable means for conservation outcome of them. As a result of using the tool that considers domestic conditions, seven areas which included Development Restriction Zones, Urban Natural Park Areas, Fishery Resources Protection Zones, Riparian Zones, Natural Recreation Forest Zones, Water Source Protection Areas, and Buffer Zones for Korea National Arboretum were selected as OECMs. And the system of national protected areas was built by integrating them with national protected areas(NPA). Compared with the NPA, the system has been expanded by them and has reached to 17.88%, exceeding the target of 17% for terrestrial and inland water protections. It was proven that they were very effective in enlarging these protections. However, it failed to contribute to the target for marine protections. The expansion of marine protected areas requires different approaches, such as discovering new types of marine protected areas or linking them to biologically important marine areas all over the world.
