Applications of Discrete Wavelet Analysis for Predicting Internal Quality of Cherry Tomatoes using VIS/NIR Spectroscopy

  • Purpose: This study evaluated the feasibility of using a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) method as a preprocessing tool for visible/near-infrared spectroscopy (VIS/NIRS) with a spectroscopic transmittance dataset for predicting the internal quality of cherry tomatoes. Methods: VIS/NIRS was used to acquire transmittance spectrum data, to which a DWT was applied to generate new variables in the wavelet domain, which replaced the original spectral signal for subsequent partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis and prediction modeling. The DWT concept and its importance are described with emphasis on the properties that make the DWT a suitable transform for analyzing spectroscopic data. Results: The $R^2$ values and root mean squared errors (RMSEs) of calibration and prediction models for the firmness, sugar content, and titratable acidity of cherry tomatoes obtained by applying the DWT to a PLS regression with a set of spectra showed more enhanced results than those of each model obtained from raw data and mean normalization preprocessing through PLS regression. Conclusions: The developed DWT-incorporated PLS models using the db5 wavelet base and selected approximation coefficients indicate their feasibility as good preprocessing tools by improving the prediction of firmness and titratable acidity for cherry tomatoes with respect to $R^2$ values and RMSEs.

  • This paper describe development of a hardware simulator for the DFIG wind power system, which was designed considering wind characteristic, blade characteristic, and blade inertia compensation. The simulator consists of three major parts, such as wind turbine model using induction motor, doubly-fed induction generator, converter-inverter set. and control system. The turbine simulator generates torque and speed signals for a specific wind turbine with respect to the given wind speed which is detected by Anemometer. This torque and speed signals are scaled down to fit the input of 3.5kW DFIG. The MSC operates to track the maximum power point, and the GSC controls the active and reactive power supplied to the grid. The operational feasibility was verified through computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC. And the implementation feasibility was confirmed through experimental works with a hardware set-up.

Feasibility Test of Smartphone Application for Activity Daily Living by Chronic Stroke Patients (만성 뇌졸중 환자를 위한 일상생활활동 스마트폰 어플리케이션 사용성 평가)

  • PURPOSE: To investigate the validity of a smartphone application for post-stroke daily living activity management based on an evaluation by users and experts. METHODS: The study design adhered to the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation ADDIE (Analysis-Design-Development-Implement-Evaluation) model. We downloaded the application onto the smartphones of 33 users and 30 experts, taught them how to use it, and asked them to use the application for four weeks. The users' daily lives before and after using the application were compared based on the K-MBI (Korean Version of Modified Barthel Index) to evaluate the usability of the application. For the expert group, we investigated the content validity and reliability of the application and evaluated the usability of the application. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 software. Users' general characteristics and experts' evaluation scores were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Content validity was tested using the content validity index (CVI), and reliability was tested with Cronbach's alpha. Users' K-MBI scores before and after using the application were compared with the paired sample t-test. RESULTS: Users gave an average rating of 2.93 out of 4 for the application for managing the daily lives of stroke patients, while experts gave an average score of 3.14. With regard to the K-MBI scores, only the dressing score improved significantly (p<.005) after using the application, and scores for other categories slightly improved but not to significant levels. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that the STROKECARE application is usable and could help stroke patients manage their daily lives.

Development of the Program for Reconnaissance and Exploratory Drones based on Open Source (오픈 소스 기반의 정찰 및 탐색용 드론 프로그램 개발)

  • With the recent increase in the development of military drones, they are adopted and used as the combat system of battalion level or higher. However, it is difficult to use drones that can be used in battles below the platoon level due to the current conditions for the formation of units in the Korean military. In this paper, therefore, we developed a program drones equipped with a thermal imaging camera and LiDAR sensor for reconnaissance and exploration that can be applied in battles below the platoon level. Using these drones, we studied the possibility and feasibility of drones for small-scale combats that can find hidden enemies, search for an appropriate detour through image processing and conduct reconnaissance and search for battlefields, hiding and cover-up through image processing. In addition to the purpose of using the proposed drone to search for an enemies lying in ambush in the battlefield, it can be used as a function to check the optimal movement path when a combat unit is moving, or as a function to check the optimal place for cover-up or hiding. In particular, it is possible to check another route other than the route recommended by the program because the features of the terrain can be checked from various viewpoints through 3D modeling. We verified the possiblity of flying by designing and assembling in a form of adding LiDAR and thermal imaging camera module to a drone assembled based on racing drone parts, which are open source hardware, and developed autonomous flight and search functions which can be used even by non-professional drone operators based on open source software, and then installed them to verify their feasibility.

Impact of Highway Construction on the Regional Economy: Gangil-Chuncheon Highway (고속도로 건설이 지역경제에 미치는 기여도 분석연구: 강일~춘천 고속도로)

  • Recently, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance announced a plan to reduce the proportion of economic evaluation in non-metropolitan areas and strengthen balanced development evaluation through the reorganization of the preliminary feasibility study system. In addition, the social value of the quality of life, such as job, environment, and safety, which may be affected by the implementation of transportation facility investment projects, was reflected as the main item of policy evaluation. In this study, the ripple effect of the project in terms of social value was reviewed for the Gangil-Chuncheon. The effect of highway opening was investigated by reviewing the feasibility report, post-evaluation report, and statistical indicators. Recently, the Gangil-Chuncheon highway is getting used by around 110,000 people per day. The number of tourists in Chuncheon rapidly has increased from 5 million a year to more than 11 million now. In addition, it was confirmed to produce effects such as population migration, net inflow and land price increase, improvement of living convenience, and expansion of emergency medical care. Although this ripple effect was influenced by various socio-economic factors as well as the opening of the highway, it is clear that it is difficult to occur without the opening of the highway. It is judged that the evaluation of indirect benefits and social values due to the opening of the highway can be quantified through continuous research and data construction. Post-evaluation of construction works, including project efficiency evaluation and ripple effect evaluation, is performed for construction works with a construction cost of more than 50 billion won. In the future, we will continuously improve the evaluation system in order to evaluate the indirect benefits and social values of public investment projects.

A Study on the Introduction of a Total Pollutant Load Management System in Gwangyang Bay, Korea (광양만 특별관리해역의 연안오염총량관리 도입에 관한 연구)

  • Seawater management via Total Pollutant Load Management System (TPLMS) is crucial because it enables local governments to optimally allocate pollutant loads in order to best reduce pollutant load burden while supporting reasonable development. This study analyzed the feasibility of introducing a TPLMS on Gwangyang Bay, a specially managed sea area. We researched the inflow of pollutants and analyzed the present state of seawater quality in Gwangyang Bay and then discussed our findings and reviewed other specially managed sea area with the Gwangyang Bay Advisory Committee. We conclude that TPLMS on Gwangyang Bay is needed and suggest checking economic feasibility, ef iciency, and conducting continuous monitoring of seawater quality indicators such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), heavy metals and polcyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) prior to introducing a TPLMS in Gwangyang Bay.

Geostationary Satellite Launch Site and Orbit Injection (정지궤도위성 발사위치와 궤도투입에 관한 고찰)

  • According to the success of the Nuri Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV-II) and the development goal of the next generation space launch vehicle (KSLV-III), it is expected that the domestic geostationary satellite capability will be increased from (1 to 3.7) ton. Also, it is predicted that substantial ability of about 1 ton can be provided for the space exploration of the Moon, Mars, asteroids, etc. The Goheung space launch site is optimized for sun-synchronous small satellites, and due to the essential precondition that the launch trajectory does not impinge another country's sovereign airspace, it is not satisfactory as a geostationary satellite launching site. Its latitude also requires more energy to shape the rotating orbital plane from the initial injection status. This results in a decreasing factor of economic feasibility, including the operating complexity. Therefore, in parallel with the development of a next generation space launch vehicle, the practical process for acquisition of oversea land or sea space launch site near the Earth's equator and research for the optimization of orbiting methods of geostationary satellite injection must be continued.

New Approach to Air Quality Management (대기오염관리의 새로운 접근방법)

  • International concern over the environmental pollution is ever increasing, and diversified countermeasures must be devised in Korea also. Global trend, damages, problems and countermeasures with respect to issues mentioned in the Rio Declaration, such as prevention of ozone layer destruction, reduction of migratory atmospheric pollution between neighboring countries, and prevention of global greenhouse effect, were discussed in this report. Conclusion of the report is summarized as follows : A. Measurement, Planning and Monitoring (1) Development and implementation of a global network for measurement and monitoring from the global aspects such factors as related to acid rain(Pioneer substances, pH, sulfate, nitrate), effect of global temperature(Air temperature, $CO_2$, $CH_4$, CFC, $N_2O$) and destruction of ozone layer($CFC_S$). (2) Establishment of network system via satellite monitoring movement of regional air mass, damage on the ozone layer and ground temperature distribution. B. Elucidation of Present State (1) Improvement and development of devices for carbon circulation capable of accurately forecasting input and output of carbon. (2) Developmental research on chemical reactions of greenhouse gas in the air. (3) Improvement and development of global circulation model(GCM) C. Impact Assessment Impact assessment on ecosystem, human body, agriculture, floodgate, land use, coastal ecology, industries, etc. D.   • Recently public institutions' debt is growing therefore it became an important issue to the level that the government concerns about the possibility of financial burden to reduce the debt. Especially debt of public enterprises in metropolitan areas was in a serious state where debt in late 2013 was 43.2 trillion, which takes approx. 58.4% of 73.9 trillion of debt of all local public enterprises. Sound financial state of local public enterprises is important to public enterprises in metropolitan areas and it may affect seriously financial stability of local governments when public enterprises have financial problems. However, land supply business to form local industrial complexes or local demand for development of public rental housing business always exist; and vitalizing local economy and creating jobs through these businesses are very necessary to develop the areas. However, for local economic development, industirial land business and public rental housing business are needed. In this study, Gwangju Metropolitan City Corporation Ltd is used as a case study to evaluate the local public financial soundness via debt management assessment i.e.(using) the feasibility analysis in the urban development and housing development. As an improvement measure following the result of analysis, for the enhancement of financial soundness of urban innovation corporation, the government and local government shall evaluate and differentiate market demand, price competitiveness, and infrastructure of new town land development project to improve accuracy of project feasibility analysis. Another important insight is that there should be local government-centered management of liabilities of the local government and local public enterprises with the integrated liability management system to reduce the liability of the corporation and solve the issue of debts for local government. This study is significant in that it has analyzed cases from the theoretical aspect to secure financial soundness of national and local public enterprises.

VEHICLE DYNAMIC SIMULATION USING A NONLINEAR FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS CODE

  • The structural integrity of either a passenger car or a light truck is one of the basic requirements for a full vehicle engineering and development program. The results of the vehicle product performance are measured in terms of ride and handling, durability, Noise/Vibration/Harshness (NVH), crashworthiness, and occupant safety. The level of performance of a vehicle directly affects the marketability, profitability and, most importantly, the future of the automobile manufacturer. In this study, the Virtual Proving Ground (VPG) approach has been developed to simulate dynamic nonlinear events as applied to automotive ride & handling. The finite element analysis technique provides a unique method to create and analyze vehicle system models, capable of including vehicle suspensions, powertrains, and body structures in a single simulation. Through the development of this methodology, event-based simulations of vehicle performance over a given three-dimensional road surface can be performed. To verify the predicted dynamic results, a single lane change test was performed. The predicted results were compared with the experimental test results, and the feasibility of the integrated CAE analysis methodology was verified.
