Approximate seismic displacement capacity of piles in marine oil terminals

  • This paper proposes an approximate procedure to estimate seismic displacement capacity - defined as yield displacement times the displacement ductility - of piles in marine oil terminals. It is shown that the displacement ductility of piles is relatively insensitive to most of the pile parameters within ranges typically applicable to most piles in marine oil terminals. Based on parametric studies, lower bound values of the displacement ductility of two types of piles commonly used in marine oil terminals - reinforced-concrete and hollow-steel - with either pin connection or full-moment-connection to the deck for two seismic design levels - Level 1 or Level 2 - and for two locations of the hinging in the pile - near the deck or below the ground - are proposed. The lower bound values of the displacement ductility are determined such that the material strain limits specified in the Marine Oil Terminal Engineering and Maintenance Standard (MOTEMS) are satisfied at each design level. The simplified procedure presented in this paper is intended to be used for preliminary design of piles or as a check on the results from the detailed nonlinear static pushover analysis procedure, with material strain control, specified in the MOTEMS.

  • A vibrating screen with multiple decks is widely employed for the process separation of many valuable export commodities. In this study, the inclination angle of the deck of the vibrating screen and the direction angle of the screen's vibration under single particle kinematics were predicted. A finite element model of the vibrating screen was established by parameterization modeling. Through modal analysis and static analysis of the model, the natural frequency, natural vibration mode, and stress distribution of the structure were determined, based on which the dynamics and design optimization of the vibrating screen could be achieved. Future plans also reflect this by conducting detailed design of vibrating screens for the manufacturing plans of vibrating screen machine.

  • New design configurations were developed based on the closed ventilation type igloo nozzle in contrast to the conventional open distribution type. To validate the enhanced performance, the prediction of the exhaust flow patterns of the igloo diffuser was carried out by both experimental and computational simulations. CFD provided detailed parametric studies that significantly reduced the amount of experimentation necessary to alter the design of existing the F-15K igloo exhaust diffuser.

  • This paper deals with design and dynamic analysis of electromagnets for levitation applications. On the basis of equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) method and 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) model, initial and detailed design for electromagnets are performed. Using the state equation for the closed-loop control, the dynamic analysis of electromagnets is also performed. Finally, this paper investigates the variation of levitation force according to current under fixed nominal air-gap, and the variation of required current according to load weight in order to maintain the nominal air-gap. From these results, the validation of design and dynamic analysis of electromagnets is confirmed. In particular, the influence of winding temperature on levitation control is discussed in detail.

  • Any one of the high precision spindle systems and guide way systems, the high stiffness of structure, the error compensation during assembly, high accuracy control system is inevitable technology for development of high precision machine tools. Especially, among these, design of spindle system is one of the most important technologies leading high precision of machine tool and high quality of manufactured products. A high speed and high precision spindle system, which will be used for final machining of ferrule, is designed considering the effect of heat cutting torque, cutting fore, and work-piece materials. The detailed design and analysis process are presented.

  • The optimal design problem for increasing dynamic stiffness using hybrid model which composed of original detailed BIW(body in white) and impinged beam elements is investigated. Using the characteristics of the beam elements and design sensitivity analysis this approach utilizes an optimization technique to determine the optimal section properties of beam elements. The constraint is to increase the first natural frequency by five percent compared with original one. The results show that the first torsion and bending natural frequencies are increased by five percent using hybrid model and optimization. These results indicate that this optimization method can be employed to enhance the dynamic stiffness of vehicle body structure in design concept stage.

  • Expert systems which represent the appllication of artificial intelligence research are now nearly 20 years old. It is said that the present technology together with ever- increasing computing applicability of Combined Hypertext-Expert System Techniques to the design of reinforced concrete structures. Hypertext systems allow the user to control the system while expert systems alone don't give the user any control over the system. Therefore the combination of these two techniques, offered by KnowledgePro, may bring us closer to real user-expert communication. The system developed in this work offers information on design in general by reorganizing ACI Manual 318-89, detailed stress analysis and cross sectional design of simple PC/RC beams and optimum design of reinforced concrete building frames. The system also includes the author's earlier work on guidance to identify types of cracks in concrete.   • This paper deals with design and analysis of thrust magnetic bearing for 300HP class high speed motor. Using the solutions obtained from equivalent magnetic circuits, we predicts the electromagnetic characteristics such as thrust, time constant and power loss according to design parameters. And then, using non-linear finite element analysis, a detailed design is performed considering saturation in order to meet requirements.

  • At researching the history of furniture design, furniture based on the bentwood technique was often seen. There are different bending ways of wood. Among others the steam bending technique had been used since long time, but it's detailed method has been much less studied in Korea yet. The aim of the present study was to investigate the theoretical approach and making ways & process of the steam bending technique, and furthermore to utilize it for the works of the students majoring furniture design. This intends that the steam bending technique will be widely distributed by doing a mock up and it will be diversely used for development of more different furniture designs.

  • In a rural house, it is necessary to make a quality model that choose effective design value engineering. So more effective models, this study examine requests of a rural house project designers, constructors, and tenants. Checked items are classified into four groups that working area, dwelling area, constructive and environmental parts. Each groups are also divided into detailed items for basic decisional elements. When basis points sets 10, it can be divided that working area parts 3pts, dwelling area parts 2.5pts, constructive parts 3pts and environmental parts 1.5pts. In this results, we can make a proposal of evaluation on additive value quality model for a rural house in design value engineering.
