  • In this paper, a non-linear structural analysis software with pro-processing and post-recessing function is proposed by the author. The software incorporating the functions of the structural analysis and geometrical design of Tensegrity structures. Using this software, Cable Dome is analyzed as a prototype, a comprehensive study on the structural behavior of Tensegrity domes is presented in detail. Design methods of Tensegrity domes were proposed. Based on the analysis, optimizing design was performed. Several new Tensegrity domes with different geometrical design scheme are proposed, the structural analysis of the new schemes is also conducted. The analysis result shows that the proposed new forms of the Tensegrity domes are reasonable for practical applications.

  • A new earthquake design method performing iterative calculations with secant stiffness was developed. Since basically the proposed design method uses linear analysis, it is convenient and stable in numerical analysis. At the same time, the proposed design method can accurately estimate the inelastic strength and ductility demands of the structural members through iterative calculations. In the present study, the procedure of the proposed design method was established, and a computer program incorporating the proposed method was developed. The proposed method, as an integrated analysis and design method, can directly address the earthquake design strategy intended by the engineer, such as limited ductility of member and the concept of strong column - weak beam. Through iterative calculations on a structural model with member sizes preliminarily assumed, the strength and ductility demands of each member can be determined so as to satisfy the given design strategy. As the result, structural safety and economical design can be achieved.

  • A new Direct Nonlinear Strut-Tie Model design method performing iterative calculations using secant stiffness was developed. Since basically the proposed design method uses elastic analysis, it has the advantages of convenience and stability in numerical analysis. At the same time, the proposed design method can accurately estimate the strength and ductility demands on the members because it analyzes the inelastic behavior of structure using iterative calculation. In the present study, the procedure of the proposed design method was established, and a computer program incorporating the proposed method was developed. The proposed design method, as an integrated method of analysis and design, can address the earthquake design strategy devised by the engineer, such as ductility limit on each member. Through iterative calculations on the structure preliminary designed with member sizes, the strength and ductility demands of each member can be estimated so that they satisfy the given design strategy, and as the result economical and safe design is achieved.

  • The present work concerns the optimal design for injection molding processes by using the design of experiments (DOE) and numerical analysis. The DOE approaches is planned to be able to consider two-way interaction, and have been applied progressively for both mold design and process design. Numerical analyses have been carried out as a design of experiments for mold parameters such as runner specifications and cooling channel configurations. In order to determine optimal process parameters, experiments have been performed for various process conditions with the DOE scheduling. As a result, the quality and productivity of the product have been improved, and the proposed approach can be successfully reflected on the industrial injection molding process of precision electronics parts.

  • This paper presents the results of the structural analysis and optimal design of the ROV to be operated at 6000m depth in the ocean. This will be the first domestic deep-sea ROV operating with an AUV and a launcher equipped with robot arms and the current weight is about 3 ton. initial optimal dimension of the frame is determined based on the stress analysis using FEA code ANSYS and design sensitivity and optimization results. The current design is the initial design and there is a possibility to change the design according to the modification of material, equipments and array of structure.

  • This work dealt with the design and manufacturing of composite blades of a vertical axis wind turbine system. In this work, aerodynamic and structural designs of sandwich composite blades for a vertical axis wind turbine system were performed. First, the aerodynamic and structural design requirements of the composite blades were investigated. After the structural design was complete, a structural analysis of the wind turbine blades was performed using the finite element analysis method. It was performed with the stress and displacement analysis at the applied load condition. A design modification for the structurally weak part was proposed as a result of the structural analysis. Through another structural analysis, it was confirmed that the final designed blade structure is safe.

  • Performance and efficiency of hybrid (hydraulic-mechanical) pick-up device of deep sea manganese nodules collector are very sensitive to altitude and altitude of pick-up head relative to undulating seafloor. For this reason, motion control of pick-up head relative to the changing deep sea topography and other disturbances is of particular importance in design of pick-up device. The concept of design axiom is applied to a pick-up device of hybrid type. Kinematic analysis conducted in absolute Cartesian coordinates gives position, velocity, and acceleration of the hydraulic cylinders which enable the pick-up head to keep the preset optimal distance from seafloor. Inverse dynamic analysis provides the driving forces of hydraulic cylinders and the reaction forces at each joint. Design sensitivity analysis is performed in order to investigate the effects of possible design variables on the change of the maximum strokes of hydraulic cylinders. The direct differentiation method is used to obtain the design sensitivity coefficients.

  • In recent years, significant advances have been made enabling travel demand analysis and network design methods to be used as increasingly realistic evaluation tools. What has been lacking is the integration of travel demand analysis with network design models. This paper reviews some of advanced (integrated) modeling approaches and presents future research directions of integrated modeling system. To design urban transportation networks, it is argued that the travelers' free choice of mode, destination and route should be introduced into transportation network design procedure instead of assuming that trips from a zone to a workplace are fixed or deriving them in a normative procedure to achieve hypothetical system optima.

  • Equations of motion of an engine mount system including foundation flexibility are derived. Forced vibration analysis is carried out for the given engine mount system excited with the unbalanced force and moment. A new optimal design method for the engine mount system is proposed, in which vibration characteristics of the chassis frame structure are considered as design parameters.

  • The performance functions of a suspension must provide often place conflicting demands upon rail bogie design since design parameters which may be altered to improve performance in one area may simultaneously reduce performance in another area. To determine compromised design parameters, it is need to carry out a number of simulations and trade-off studies. The suspension design system based on computer simulations is presented. The system is composed of analysis solvers and GUI which have functions such as modeling, analysis and sensitivity analysis.
