PURPOSE. Digital technology has enabled improvements in the fitting accuracy of denture bases via milling techniques. The aim of this study was to evaluate the trueness and precision of digital and analog techniques for manufacturing complete dentures (CDs). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty identical CDs were manufactured using different production protocols. Digital and analog technologies were compared using the reference geometric approach, and the Δ-error values of eight areas of interest (AOI) were calculated. For each AOI, a precise number of measurement points was selected according to sensitivity analyses to compare the Δ-error of trueness and precision between the original model and manufactured prosthesis. Three types of statistical analysis were performed: to calculate the intergroup cumulative difference among the three protocols, the intergroup among the AOIs, and the intragroup difference among AOIs. RESULTS. There was a statistically significant difference between the dentures made using the oversize process and injection molding process (P < .001), but no significant difference between the other two manufacturing methods (P = .1227). There was also a statistically significant difference between the dentures made using the monolithic process and the other two processes for all AOIs (P = .0061), but there was no significant difference between the other two processes (P = 1). Within each group, significant differences among the AOIs were observed. CONCLUSION. The monolithic process yielded better results, in terms of accuracy (trueness and precision), than the other groups, although all three processes led to dentures with Δ-error values well within the clinical tolerance limit.
PURPOSE. This study characterized the synthesis of a modified PMMA (Polymethyl methacrylate) denture acrylic loading platinum nanoparticles (PtN) and assessed its bacterial inhibitory efficacy to produce novel antimicrobial denture base material. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Polymerized PMMA denture acrylic disc ($20mm{\times}2mm$) specimens containing 0 (control), 10, 50, 100 and 200 mg/L of PtN were fabricated respectively. The obtained platinum-PMMA nanocomposite (PtNC) was characterized by TEM (transmission electron microscopy), SEM/EDX (scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), thermogravimetric and atomic absorption spectrophotometer analysis. In antimicrobial assay, specimens were placed on the cell culture plate, and $100{\mu}L$ of microbial suspensions of S. mutans (Streptococcus mutans) and S. sobrinus (Streptococcus sobrinus) were inoculated then incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The bacterial attachment was tested by FACS (fluorescence-activated cell sorting) analysis after staining with fluorescent probe. RESULTS. PtN were successfully loaded and uniformly immobilized into PMMA denture acrylic with a proper thermal stability and similar surface morphology as compared to control. PtNC expressed significant bacterial anti-adherent effect rather than bactericidal effect above 50 mg/L PtN loaded when compared to pristine PMMA (P=.01) with no or extremely small amounts of Pt ion eluted. CONCLUSION. This is the first report on the synthesis and its antibacterial activity of Pt-PMMA nanocomposite. PMMA denture acrylic loading PtN could be a possible intrinsic antimicrobial denture material with proper mechanical characteristics, meeting those specified for denture bases. For clinical application, future studies including biocompatibility, color stability and warranting the long-term effect were still required.
For the successful treatment of complete denture, obtaining a good retention is essential. There are lots of factors affecting denture retention. Denture material, one of those factors affecting denture retention, was the subject of this study, and internal surface treatment also considered for the method of enhancing denture retention. Two resin(Lucitone $199^{(R)}$(heat cured resin) Vertex $CP^{(R)}$(self cured resin)) and two metal($Biosil^{(R)}$(Co-Cr alloy), $Vitallium^{(R)}$(Co-Cr alloy)) denture base materials were used for making test denture base. Newly developed device was used for measuring denture retention. After the retention was measured. We treated internal surface of test denture base with $50{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$ powder, under 90psi, for 1 minute. Then the retention was measured again. The result was analyzed with K-S test, one-way ANOVA test and independent t-test to deter mine the significant differences as the 95% level of confidence. The results are as follows : In cases of without internal surface treatment, the retention was increased in order of $Vitallium^{(R)},\;Biosil^{(R)},\;Vertex CP^{(R)}$ and Lucitone $199^{(R)}$. Except between Vertex $CP^{(R)}$ and $Biosil^{(R)}$, retention of the other materials was significantly different (p<0.05). After the treatment of internal surface, the retention was increased in order of $Vitallium^{(R)},\;Biosil^{(R)},\;Lucno\;199^{(R)},\;Vertex\;CP^{(R)}$. Except between Lucitone $199^{(R)}$ and Vertex $CP^{(R)}$, $Vitallium^{(R)}$ and $Biosil^{(R)}$ the retention of remaining groups was significantly different each other (p<0.05). In the matter of each material, after the internal surface treatment the retention was increased with Vertex $CP^{(R)},\;Biosil^{(R)}\;and\;Vitallium^{(R)}$ and the value of differences were statistically significant. When we compare the retention of resin and metal denture base, the retention of both denture bases increased significantly with internal surface treatment, and resin denture base showed better retention. As the results show, selecting denture base material could be an important choice of complete denture treatment. To increase denture retention, internal surface treatment can be considered as a possible method.

Purpose: Generally, patients are noticed to store denture in water when removed from the mouth. However, few studies have reported the advantage of volumetric change in underwater storage over dry storage. To be a reference in defining the proper denture storage method, this study aims to evaluate the volumetric change and dimensional deformation in case of underwater and dry storage. Materials and methods: Definitive casts were scanned by a model scanner, and denture bases were designed with computer-aided design (CAD) software. Twelve denture bases (upper 6, lower 6) were printed with 3D printer. Printed denture bases were invested and flasked with heat-curing method. 6 upper and 6 lower dentures were divided into group A and B, and each group contains 3 upper and 3 lower dentures. Group A was stored dry at room temperature, group B was stored underwater. Group B was scanned at every 24 hours for 28 days and scanned data was saved as stereolithography (SLA) file. These SLA files were analyzed to measure the difference in volumetric change of a month and Kruskal-Wallis test were used for statistical analysis. Best-fit algorithm was used to overlap and 3-dimensional color-coded map was used to observe the changing pattern of impression surface. Results: No significant difference was found in volumetric changes regardless of the storage methods. In dry-stored denture base, significant changes were found in the palate of upper jaw and posterior lingual border of lower jaw in direction away from the underlying tissue, maxillary tuberosity of upper jaw and retromolar pad area of lower jaw in direction towards the underlying tissue. Conclusion: Storing the denture underwater shows less volumetric change of impression surface than storing in the dry air.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of relining materials on the flexural strength of relined thermoplastic denture base resins (TDBRs). MATERIALS AND METHODS. For shear bond strength testing, 120 specimens were fabricated using four TDBRs (EstheShot-Bright, Acrytone, Valplast, Weldenz) that were bonded with three autopolymerizing denture relining resins (ADRRs: Vertex Self-Curing, Tokuyama Rebase, Ufi Gel Hard) with a bond area of 6.0 mm in diameter and were assigned to each group (n=10). For flexural strength testing, 120 specimens measuring $64.0{\times}10.0{\times}3.3mm$ (ISO-1567:1999) were fabricated using four TDBRs and three ADRRs and were assigned to each group (n=10). The thickness of the specimens measured 2.0 mm of TDBR and 1.3 mm of ADRR. Forty specimens using four TDBRs and 30 specimens using ADRRs served as the control. All specimens were tested on a universal testing machine. For statistical analysis, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey's test as post hoc and Spearman's correlation coefficient analysis (P=.05) were performed. RESULTS. Acry-Tone showed the highest shear bond strength, while Weldenz demonstrated the lowest bond strength between TDBR and ADRRs compared to other groups. EstheShot-Bright exhibited the highest flexural strength, while Weldenz showed the lowest flexural strength. Relined EstheShot-Bright demonstrated the highest flexural strength and relined Weldenz exhibited the lowest flexural strength (P<.05). Flexural strength of TDBRs (P=.001) and shear bond strength (P=.013) exhibited a positive correlation with the flexural strength of relined TDBRs. CONCLUSION. The flexural strength of relined TDBRs was affected by the flexural strength of the original denture base resins and bond strength between denture base resins and relining materials.
Statement of the problem. The record base in fabricating procedures of the complete denture, as a temporary form for reproducing denture base, is used to record upper and lower jaw relation and to align artificial teeth and try-in it in the mouth. The accuracy of jaw relation record is affected by the accuracy, stiffness and stability of the record base. So, the accuracy of record base is the most important requirements of jaw relation records. Purpose of study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the gap that occurred over the palatal area of a maxillary record base fabricated with autopolymerizing resin and light-curing resin. Methods/material. The maxillary record bases were fabricated out of autopolymerizing resin that is used the most frequently in clinics and light-curing resin that attracts special attention for its several merits. The light-curing resin was made by two kinds of polymerization methods, which are one step curing method and multiple step curing method. All record bases were cut in certain positions of the master cast 1 hour and 1 day later after fabrication and the accuracy of the master cast was measured and analyzed with a microscope. Results. A pattern of gap formation between the record base and the maxillary cast was observed in all specimens. According to kinds of resins, autopolymerizing resin was significantly more accurate than light-curing resin. There was no statistical difference according to time lapse, and in all three groups, the maximum discrepancy occurred at the posterior border in the mid-palatal region. Conclusion. The autopolymerizing resin is better than light-curing resin, and multiple step curing method is more accurate than one step curing method when using light-curing resin.
Statement of problem : Recently, in attempts to reinforce the acrylic resin and to reduce the polymerization shrinkage, it has been reported that adding vinyloligo-silsesquioxane (vinyl-POSS) to PMMA significantly compensates for polymerization shrinkage and somewhat increases the fracture resistance. Purpose : There haven't been any studies on abrasion that can affect the adaptation of the denture in long-term use. In this study abrasion resistance was compared between acrylic resin with vinyl-POSS and commercialized acrylic resin for denture base. In addition, the difference in abrasion resistance according to molding methods was compared. Material and method : Using PaladentR 20 including vinyl-POSS. PaladentR 20, Lucitone 199R, SR IvocapR, denture bases were fabricated using compression molding technique and continuous-pressure injection technique. Surface hardness and abrasion were measured for each group, and the worn surfaces were observed under a scanning electron microscope. Results : 1. When surface hardness was measured for each material and molding technique, there was no statistically significant difference among the materials. (p<0.05) 2. When same denture base material and molding technique were used, the abrasion due to toothpaste solution was 5 times as severe as the abrasion due to soap solution. 3, When toothpaste solution was used, the abrasion decreased in the order of PaladentR20, PaladentR 20 including vinyl-POSS, SR IvocapR, and Lucitone 199R. However statistically significant difference was seen only among PaladentR 20, SR IvocapR, and Lucitone 199R. (p<0.05). 4. When soap solution was used, the abrasion was more severe in PaladentR 20 and including vinyl-POSS PaladentR 20 groups than in SR IvocapR and Lucitone 199R groups. (p<0.05). Conclusion : Addition of vinyl-POSS doesn't improve the abrasion resistance, and the abrasion resistance was similar to those of existing materials. Additional studies under different conditions are needed. For clinical application of vinyl-POSS, further investigations with different requirements and conditions are necessary.

The bond strength of denture base resin and resin teeth, is an important factor in the long term prognosis of dentures. The purpose of this study is to find an appropriate combination of commercial denture base resin and artificial resin teeth according to shear bond strength. In this study, the shear bond strength of various denture base resins (Vertex $RS^{(R)}$(Dentimax Ziest, Holland), $PERform^{(R)}$(Hedent GmbH., Germany), SR $IVOCAP^{(R)}$(Ivoclar AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein)) and resin teeth (SR Orthosit PE(Ivoclar AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein), $Trubyte^{(R)}$$Biotone^{(R)}$(Dentsply, U.S.A.)) was evaluated. 1. In comparison of denture resin, the shear bond strength increased in the order of $IVOCAP^{(R)}$, $PERform^{(R)}$, Vertex $RS^{(R)}$. 2. In resin teeth, $Trubyte^{(R)}$$Biotone^{(R)}$ showed higher strength, but there was no statistical difference between the groups. 3. According to loading direction, the lingual showed higher strength, but there was no statistical difference. 4. When using SR Orthosit PE, SR $IVOCAP^{(R)}$ showed significantly higher shear bond strength(p<0.05). 5. Fracture tendancy showed more cohesive fractures(59) than adhesive failures(13). $IVOCAP^{(R)}$ showed the most superior results statistically. $Trubyte^{(R)}Biotone^{(R)}$ showed the highest shear bond strength. When using the SR Orthosit PE, it is thought that $IVOCAP^{(R)}$ would present the most superior results.
The purpose of this study was to compare the fithness, hardness and bending strength of the conventional reliners and visible light curing reliner. Nine regions were selected in the upper transverse section which were thought to be of interest from a clinical standpoint and the discrepancies between the dentures and the master cast in these regions were determined by the coordinated measuring machine(UMM-500, Zeiss, W. Germany). The results were as follows ; 1. The experimental denture bases showed the lowest fittness at the central portion of the posterior palatal border and the intimate contact in the buccal flanges regardless of relining materials and relining methods. 2. The fittness of relined denture base was the best in autopolymerizing group and in the order of long processing, short processing and visible light curing group. 3. The fittness after 24 hour-storage in water was improved in long processing and autopolymerizing groups, but there was no significant difference. 4. The hardness was the highest in long processing group and decreased in the order of short processing, visible light curing and autopolymerizing group. 5. The bending strength was the highest in long processing group and decreased short processing, visible light curing, and aotopolymerzing group in order.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of secondary heat treatment on dimensional changes of acrylic resin partial denture base. For this study, 6 specimens were made: 2 groups of 2 specimens, each was treated with $125^{\circ}C$ dry heat and glycerine heat for 3 minutes, and the others were prepared for control group. The change of the internal diameter of specimens were measured after 3 hrs, 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks by three-dimensional space analyzer. The results were as follows : 1. All of the acrylic resin denture bases showed tissue ward thermal contraction. 2. Thermal contraction of the mesial area reinforced with metal framework was lesser than that of the distal area without metal framework. 3. Thermal contraction of the lingual flange reinforced with metal framework occured more slowly than that of the buccal flange without the metal framework. 4. The thermal contraction of dry heat treated acrylic resin base, compared to glycerine heat group, was moderately greater and occurred acutely.
