Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the awareness of students majoring in dental hygiene regarding the advanced dental hygiene system for the elderly and people with disabilities. Methods: From September 25 to October 20, 2023, an online survey was conducted with junior and senior students in 27 universities, including eight in the Seoul area, seven in the Chungcheong area, eight in the Yeongnam area, and four in the Honam area. Data analysis methods included frequency analysis, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA. Results: After graduation, 72.9% of students were willing to work as advanced dental hygienists for the elderly and people with disabilities, and had greater recognition of the system (p=0.042), role (p<0.001), and expected effect (p=0.027) of an advanced dental hygienist than students who were not willing to work in this capacity. Conclusions: It is necessary to introduce a system that recognizes advanced dental hygienists for their expertise in oral hygiene management for the elderly and people with disabilities.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the self-efficacy of dental hygiene students and their satisfaction with clinical practice to provide information for developing programs aimed at instilling self-efficacy and boosting satisfaction with clinical practice. Methods: A self-reported survey was conducted with dental hygiene students in the metropolitan area. Of those surveys distributed, 243 questionnaires were analyzed. Results: The results of this study are as follows: 1. Regarding self-efficacy, the subjects had a mean result of 2.96(out of five points), and 3.09 points in satisfaction with clinical practice. 2. As for the subfactors of self-efficacy, the students who got higher grades, whose awareness of dental hygienists was better and whose awareness of dental hygienists after on-site clinical practice was better scored higher in terms of confidence and self-regulation. In task difficulty preference, the students who were more satisfied with majoring in dental hygiene and whose awareness of dental hygienists was better scored higher. In terms of motivation for choosing the dental hygiene department, the students scored higher when the department was their preferred option. 3. In satisfaction with clinical practice, the students who were aware of dental hygienists at the time of college entrance was better. Those whose awareness of dental hygienists after experiencing clinical practice was better and who were more satisfied with majoring in dental hygiene expressed more satisfaction with clinical practice. 4. Satisfaction with clinical practice was higher when self-efficacy was better. Conclusions: Based on the above results, it is thought that developing programs that can enhance self-efficacy and include on-site clinical practice would be beneficial as higher self-efficacy levels were related to higher clinical practice satisfaction.
Objectives : The purpose of the study was to investigate the effective coping management of stress towards self-efficacy in students of dental hygiene department. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by the students of dental hygiene department in Daegu from April to May, 2013. Problem-focused coping was 2.50, and social support-seeking coping was 2.60 in active coping. Emotional coping was 2.29, and hopeful thinking coping was 2.76 in passive coping. The level of self-efficacy according to general characteristics varied significantly depending on grade, satisfaction with major, subjective health status and smoking status. The stress coping methods according to general characteristics varied significantly depending on academic achievement and satisfaction with major. The results showed that the level of self-efficacy was associated with stress-coping methods. Conclusions : Self-efficacy of students of dental hygiene department was associated with stress coping methods. It is necessary to develop the programs for stress coping to increase self-efficacy.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the satisfaction level of dental hygiene students with their major and clinical practice in an effort to have a good understanding of dental hygiene students. The subjects in this study were 226 juniors who were selected from among dental hygiene students at four different colleges located in Busan and South Gyeongnam Province. Methods : The collected data were analyzed by the SPSS WIN 15.0. Statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained to figure out the general characteristics of the students. To grasp their satisfaction level with clinical practice and major, another statistical data on mean and standard deviation were obtained, and t-test and one-way ANOVA were carried out and correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Results : As for the relationship between general characteristics and satisfaction with clinical practice, their collective average was 3.29. The dental hygiene students who were more satisfied with their major expressed higher satisfaction with the practicums, the content of practice and clinical practice. In relation to the impact of the satisfaction of the dental hygiene students with major on their satisfaction with clinical practice, the students who were more satisfied with social awareness and with the courses expressed better satisfaction with clinical practice. Conclusions : Given the findings of the study, the departments of dental hygiene that nurture professionals should carefully consider how to raise the satisfaction of students with the courses that affect the improvement of satisfaction with major and clinical practice.
The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data needed to plan the effective teaching design of scaling education and to measure the changes in students' confidence in performing scaling according to the number of scaling practices. Scaling education is presented as a core basic hygiene competency of dental hygienists and evaluated as the practical competency of dental hygienists. This study selected 48 third-year students from the department of dental hygiene at S University in Asan, and analyzed data from completed participant surveys. The degree of "confidence in facing the subject in clinical practice," "confidence in applying hand instrument to the subject," and "confidence in applying ultrasonic instruments to the subject" was assessed on a five-point Likert scale. The difference in confidence was analyzed during five practice sessions. Each response was compared using frequency analysis, chi-square test, and repeated measurement ANOVA. Students who complained of a lack of confidence in the 14.6%, 25.0%, and 12.5%, respectively, in face-to-face practice, hand instruments, and ultrasonic instrument application responses. The more the practice was repeated, the more confident students were in all three categories, and the more statistically significant (p<0.001). As the number of scaling practice sessions increased, students' confidence in performing scaling also improved. In particular, the level of self-confidence was higher after the third practice session when compared to the first session. Therefore, it is necessary to design effective courses for teaching scaling practices so that at least three repetitive practice periods can be provided in clinical dental hygiene practices.
The aim of this study was to investigate the level of dental infection control experienced by dental hygiene students in clinical practice institutions to identify problems and improve infection control in dental institutions. This study conducted online surveys targeting 269 dental hygiene students from universities that conducted clinical practice to determine the students' level of awareness regarding dental infection control in dental institutions and the reality of infection control in dental institutions. The results showed that dental hygiene students recognized the need for infection control and education about infection control at a high level. However, only 47% of the students were accurately informed about COVID-19. Basic instruments, periodontal instruments, and implant surgical instruments were sterilized after use for each patient, mostly by the institution, but 3-way syringe tips, preservation instruments and prosthetic instruments were more frequently reused without sterilization immediately after use. For dental infection control to be practiced at dental institutions, it is necessary to establish a systematic and safe infection control system, including infection control education, designation of infection managers, and provision of infection control guidelines.
The setting of dental hygiene clinics is very important to dental hygiene education, which is the place not only to educate students but also to care clients. The purpose of this study is to provide basic research material for improvement of dental hygiene care system in dental hygiene clinics by analyzing the client satisfaction. A questionnaire survey by means of self-entry method was conducted to find out satisfaction of the client, who was visited to the dental hygiene clinics in the department of dental hygiene, Yonsei University. An analysis of frequency, one way ANOVA and T-Test were performed through SPSS 12.0K program. 1. Most clients were mainly composed of students in Wonju College of Medicine. 2. The clients visited for scaling(85.8%) and oral examination(9.73%) were much than treatment(4.42%). 3. Clients aged 21 to 25 were relatively lower in satisfaction with the facilities, system, attitude than any other ages. 4. The dental hygiene students are the lowest group in satisfaction with the facility, system, attitude than medical and nursing students. 5. The clients satisfaction with dental hygiene clinics was decreased in reverse proportion to visiting frequency. 6. Most of the clients pointed out the problems of appointment system(54.0%) and fee(23.0%), which should be improved than any other operation conditions. 7. Most of the clients were not satisfied with chair time and pain during care. 8. Most clients recognized to receive the better care service than other dental offices(81.3%). Especially, they paid attention to oral health education using phase-contrast microscope. 9. Many clients were dissatisfied with facilities of the dental hygiene clinics(71.7%). The problems of appointment system(54.0%) and chair time of dental hygiene care services(63.6%) had also inconvenienced to clients. The dental hygiene clinics in school play a crucial role in dental hygiene education to foster the student to be competent as a professional dental hygienist in the future. Therefore, well-organized dental hygiene care program based on dental hygiene process is essential. It is also required to improve the environment of dental hygiene clinics including facilities, appointment system and fee etc.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness-perception factors and oral health promotion behavior of dental hygiene and nonhealth-related students in an effort to find out factors affecting their oral health promotion behavior. Methods : The subjects in this study were students in the three-year-course dental hygiene and students in the two-year-course nonhealth-related department in G college located in the city of Gwangju. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed and compared. Results : 1. The dental hygiene students were statistically significantly ahead of the nonhealth-related students in perceived oral health knowledge(p<0.001), awareness of the importance of oral health(p<0.001), perceived oral health status(p<0.001) and oral health interest(p<0.001). 2. Concerning the characteristics of oral health promotion behavior, the dental hygiene students were statistically significantly better at toothbrushing(p<0.001) and the use of dental floss(p<0.001) than the nonhealth-related students. 3. Regarding factors affecting oral health promotion behavior, oral health knowledge and oral health interest were identified as the factors that impacted on oral health promotion behavior. Out of the two, oral health interest exercised a greater influence on that. Conclusions : It seems that oral health education could motivate students to be concerned about their oral health, to acquire knowledge on that and eventually to change their oral health behavior and attitude. As for college students, oral health education provides a final chance for them to check their oral health knowledge, attitude and oral health promotion behavior before they start to work as full-fledged adults, and institutional measures should be taken to offer more intensive official oral health education.
This study set out to examine the characteristics and consciousness of biomedical ethics among dental hygiene and nursing students and provide basic data for the education of biomedical ethics in the department of dental hygiene. The subjects include 158 and 128 students in the dental hygiene and nursing departments, respectively, at a university in Gyeongnam. Collected data was analyzed with the SPSS 12.0 program. 1. The analysis results show that the dental hygiene and nursing students scored mean 2.72 and 2.65 points in biomedical ethics consciousness, respectively, with statistical significance(p<.000). 2. In the subareas of biomedical ethics, the two groups showed the highest and lowest level of consciousness in organ transplant and euthanasia, respectively. 3. The two groups had differences in characteristics related to biomedical ethics by the major such as ethical values(p<.05), experiences with biomedical ethics education(p<.01), time of biomedical ethics education(p<.001), sources of information and knowledge about biomedical ethics(p<.01), experiences with conflicts in biomedical ethics(p<.000), and willingness to participate in education(p<.05). 4. The nursing students recorded higher biomedical ethics consciousness than the dental hygiene students with no statistically significant differences between them. Biomedical ethics consciousness had positive correlations with ethical values(r=.122) and experiences with biomedical ethics education(r=.356). Based on these findings, the study proposed the development of educational content for biomedical ethics consciousness and research on its effectiveness to help dental hygiene students form desirable biomedical ethics consciousness.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the causes of stress driven by the national examination and to find out correlation between stress factors and students' general characteristics. Methods : Data were collected from self-reported questionnaires by dental hygiene students in D university in February, 2012. Results : Those having good high school GPAs (p<.05) and high preliminary test scores (p<.01) towards dental hygienist (p<.05). National license examination was the most stressful factor for 54.2% of the students. Much more stressful pressure goes to students of non-scheduled admission (p<.01), students who graduated from vocational high schools(p<.01), students with good high school GPAs (p<.05), and having high preliminary test scores(p<.05). Most of the students tended to bear the burden on national written examination with an average of 4.17. The most difficult subject was oral biology introduction (average 4.52). Oral biology introduction was more stressful to students of early admission, students graduating from vocational high schools (p<.05), students with good high school GPAs (p<.05), and students who had relatively low preliminary test scores (p<.001). Conclusions : It is crucial to reduce stress factors and to develop related programs.
