  • The aim of this study was to investigate adult individuals' perceptions on the association between chronic diseases and oral health provide basic data required for motivating individuals to follow ideal oral health behaviors and boost their interests in oral disease prevention and treatment. Subjects in their 20s to 50s were selected through the convenience sampling method and eleven questions were set as factors and answered via self-administered questionnaires. To determine statistical significance, analysis of variance was used with the level of significance set at 0.05. The subjects' perception of the association between chronic diseases and oral health were analyzed with respect to their health behaviors. Individuals with relatively higher stress levels demonstrated higher levels of perception levels (p<0.05). Public education regarding the association between chronic diseases and oral health has not been ideally effective in South Korea. Thus, the general public's perceptions of the association between chronic diseases and oral health should be revised. In addition aspects regarding this matter should be enhanced within oral health education programs which often only focus on demonstrating the importance of oral health management so that individuals can get sufficient information on the association between chronic diseases and oral health.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of occlusion patterns using the T-scan $III^{(R)}$ system and oral parafunctional behaviors on temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) in female college students. Methods: A questionnaire survey assessed TMD symptoms and oral behavioral checklist (OBC) scores in 120 female college students in their early twenties. Occlusion was evaluated using the T-scan $III^{(R)}$ system. Logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between occlusion and OBC scores based on patients' symptoms of TMD and to determine whether OBC scores were a predictor of TMD. Results: A total of 101 participants with an average age of 22 (${\pm}2.17$) years were included in the analysis. The reported symptoms of TMD were categorized as moderate (28.8%), slight (27.7%), severe (25.7%), and asymptomatic (17.8%). Occlusion was analyzed using the T-scan $III^{(R)}$ system, and the mean occlusion time was 0.42(${\pm}0.5$) seconds. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that the group that would 'clench or grind teeth' during sleep showed an odds ratio for TMD that was 8.9 times higher than that in the group without this behavior. The group that would 'hold, tighten, or tense muscles without clenching' while awake showed an odds ratio for TMD that was 21.3 times higher than that in the group without this behavior. Conclusions: We confirmed that oral parafunctional behavior affects TMD. Therefore, we would like to continue studying the diagnosis and treatment of TMD by evaluating occlusion patterns and related OBC scores.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the dental screening and health care behaviors for 17810 residents of Gyeongsangnam-do province using the data of the community health survey conducted in 2014. The SPSS ver. 23.0 statistical program was used. The residents were male, aged 30-49 years, city dwellers, their final education level was college or higher, their income was more than 600 KRW monthly, and they had a lot of experience of dental screening. In terms of oral health care, scaling, brushing after eating, brushing before going to bed, and brushing more than 4 times a day were found in the dental screening. In terms of health care, the levels of drinking, without chronic diseases, self-rated health and self-rated oral health were high when the residents had experience of dental screening(p<0.001). Therefore, it is necessary to establish a plan to improve the oral examination rate, because the level of dental screening is related to the levels of subjective health awareness and chronic diseases and lifestyle, and it is necessary to develop an education program to improve the awareness of the need for regular dental screening.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the level of awareness regarding the relationship between systemic diseases and oral health and the importance of education related to this association among dental patients, as well as to identify factors that affect the awareness of the relationship and the perceived need for education. This study was conducted from June 2016 to February 2017. Subjects of this study included outpatients (20-60 years old) from a dental clinic, and only patients who agreed to the survey were included. A total of 110 subjects were included, but the final analysis was based on 92 questionnaires, excluding questionnaires that were inaccurate. Survey questionnaires were completed by self-report and face-to-face interviews with a dental hygienist. The questionnaires covered basic information, awareness of the association between general and oral health, and experience with, and need for education related to, this association. Among the subjects, 48.9% were aware of the association between systemic diseases and oral health. A total of 39.1% of subjects had received education regarding the relationship between systemic diseases and oral health. Subjects who visited dental clinics regularly were 3.94 times (95% confidence intervals [CI]: 1.21-12.84) more likely to be aware of the association between oral health and disease compared with subjects who made only irregular visits to dental clinics. In addition, experience or education was significantly associated with awareness of the relationship between oral health and disease (odds ratio [OR]: 4.64, 95% CI: 1.54-13.93) and the need for education (OR: 3.98, 95% CI: 1.20-13.12). Thus, the dental professionals should provide education on the relationship between oral health and systemic disease in dental clinics to improve patients' awareness and oral health behaviors. These results can be used to strengthen education in the dental clinic.

  • To study the effects of oral health education on children, weekly education sessions and surveys were held for 214 preschoolers, 6-7 years of age, in 2 K-area kindergartens for 4 weeks in July 2015. Statistics on oral health behaviors such as children with regular dental checkups(p<0.05), children who underwent fluoride application(p<0.05), children without dental caries diagnosis(p<0.001), children with mothers who underwent oral health education(p<0.05) showed significant difference. Oral health knowledge scores(6 being perfect) increased from pre-education scores of 4.96 to post-education score of 5.54. oral health behavior scores(11 being perfect) also increased from pre-education scores of 7.18 to post-education score of 7.75(p<0.001). Therefore, it is the author's opinion that the development of oral health education programs with relatively short cycles, alongside systematic, practical, and repeated education would be beneficial.
