  • Managing the growing number of data generated through various processes requires the aid of Database Management System (DBMS) to efficiently handle the huge amount of data. These data can be inserted into database m real time or in batch, that come from multiple sources, including those that are coming from inside and outside of a network. The insertion of large amount of data is commonly done through specific bulk loading or insertion function supplied by each individual DBMS. In this paper, we analyze and evaluate on handling data bulk loading for heterogeneous systems that is organised as multi-tiered architecture and compare the result of DBMS bulk loader against program insertion from a software development perspective. We propose a hybrid solution using staging database that can be easily deployed for enhancing bulk loading performance compared to insertion by application.

  • Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is an individual and parallel design framework applied in designing large and complex systems. for successful implementation of MDO framework it is essential to manage data in efficient and integrated manner. In this study, we present a case study to implement database to support designing super high temperature vacuum furnace with MDO technology. For that purpose we first extract required data based on the analysis of design process and then data flows between different programs are analyzed. Finally an E-R diagram is presented to design database schema.

  • This paper presents a database approach to integrating the structural analysis and design processes for a typical shear wall apartment building design. Our initial efforts have focused on extracting various graphic information from CAD(AutoCAD™) systems. But now, we concentrate our research efforts on organizing specific information generated during the structural analysis and design processes. The proposed overall system consists of a conventional structural analysis package, a conventional CAD system, and different application interface programs. This system is based on an engineering database which is developed by using an object-oriented data modelling approach. The system is actually implemented on an ORACLE™-based relational database management system.

  • Case-Based Reasoning(CBR) systems support ill structured decision-making. The measure of the success of a CBR system depends on its ability to retrieve the most relevant previous cases in support of the solution of a new case. One of the methodologies widely used in existing CBR systems to retrieve previous cases is that of the Nearest Neighbor(NN) matching function. The NN matching function is based on assumptions of the independence of attributes in previous case and the availability of rules and procedures for matching.(omitted)

  • With the advance of computer and communication technologies, a lot of virtual schools provide web-based classes that provide learning environments out of temporal and spatial constraints and many research works on the web-based classes have been proposed. Various techniques are required to build the virtual schools efficiently. One of them is the scheme for transaction management. However, existing transaction management schemes have inappropriate features for supporting web-based classes. In this paper, we propose a new locking-based transaction processing protocol that satisfies the requirements after presenting the requirements for transaction management to support web-based classes. In the protocol, a new method, called mark, is adopted to satisfy the requirements. The proposed protocol also eliminates unnecessary delays or abortions and thus, the proposed protocol can improve the performance of database systems.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a PC-based water supply facilities information system. This system will be a major stepping-stone for developing Geographic Information Systems(GIS) in Korea, which is constructed by integrating the technologies related to Automated Mapping(AM) systems and Facilities Management(FM) system. And the results of this study are as follows: (1) After the user needs assessment, it was decided that information management of the water supply facilities including distribution pipes, valves, and leaking management are the most urgent tasks. So, the system was developed focusing on these tasks. (2) After the system design and development, the water supply facilities information system consists of graphic database management system, attribute database management system, internal interface that links graphic data and attribute data, and graphic user interface for user-friendliness. (3) The graphic data and the attribute data including distribution pipes, leading-pipes, valves, and parcels at the study area, Non-Hyun Dong Kang-Nam Gu in Seoul, were used in this system, and the water supply facilities database was established. It was applied to test these facilities, and proved that the system developed in this study is efficient to manage information within the scope of this study. (4) The function using the parcel identification number was efficient to locate the address concerned.

  • This study deals with the effective management system on the underground facilities by Geographic In-formation System (GIS). For this purpose,"Management System on the Water Supply Network by GIS in Kwangju" was analylized. Following results were obtained in this study. This system could be practically used for the inquiry of water supply and distribution pipes, check valves, pipe equipments and parcel identification numbers. Inquiry of addresses using the parcel identification numbers were effective for the database management system of the water supply facilities. The poits at issue for the performance of this study were the security and education of experts, the security of revenue source, the discord between GIS companies concerned. Establishments of GIS software technologies and database systems, and the settlement between GIS companies were required for the solution of these poits. Development of computer management systems on the water sup-ply network by GIS enabled the replacement of outworn pipes and the leakage inquiry techniques in pipes. in pipes.

  • The CAMS(Central Archives Management System) of NAK(National Archives of Korea) is an important system which receives and manages large amount of electronic records annually from 2015. From the point of view in database design, this paper analyzes the database schema of CAMS and discusses the direction of overall improvement of the CAMS. Firstly this research analyzes the tables for records and folders in the CAMS database which are core tables for the electronic records management. As a result, researchers notice that it is difficult to trust the quality of the records in the CAMS, because two core tables are entirely not normalized and have many columns whose roles are unknown. Secondly, this study suggests directions of normalization for the tables for records and folders in the CAMS database like followings: First, redistributing the columns into proper tables to reduce the duplication. Second, separating the columns about the classification scheme into separate tables. Third, separating the columns about the records types and sorts into separate tables. Lastly, separating metadata information related to the acquisition, takeover and preservation into separate tables. Thirdly, this paper suggests considerations to design and manage the database schema in each phase of archival management. In the ingest phase, the system should be able to process large amount of records as batch jobs in time annually. In the preservation phase, the system should be able to keep the management histories in the CAMS as audit trails including the reclassification, revaluation, and preservation activities related to the records. In the access phase, the descriptive metadata sets for the access should be selected and confirmed in various ways. Lastly, this research also shows the prototype of conceptual database schema for the CAMS which fulfills the metadata standards for records.

  • This study proposes a methodology to analyse social networks among participating design engineers during product development projects. The proposed methodology enables product development managers or the participating design engineers to make a proper decision on product development considering the performance of participating design engineers. It considers a product development environment where an integrated product data management (PDM) system manages the product development data and associated product development processes consistently in its database, and all the design engineers share the product development data in the PDM database for their activities in the product development project. It provides a novel approach to build social networks among design engineers from an operational product development data in the PDM database without surveys or monitoring participating engineers. It automatically generates social networks among the design engineers from the product data and relationships specified by the participants during the design activities. It allows analysts to gather operational data for their analysis without additional efforts for understanding complex and unstructured product development processes. This study also provides a set of measures to evaluate the social networks. It will show the role and efficiency of each design engineers in the social network. To show the feasibility of the approach, it suggests an architecture of social network analysis (SNA) system and implemented it with a research-purpose PDM system and R, a statistical software system. A product configuration management process with synthetical example data is applied to the SNA system and it shows that the approach enables analysts to evaluate current position of design engineers in their social networks.
