Design and Cost Analysis for a Fault-Tolerant Distributed Shared Memory System

  • Algorithms implementing distributed shared memory (DSM) were developed for ensuring consistency. The performance of DSM algorithms is dependent on system and usage parameters. However, ensuring these algorithms to tolerate faults is a problem that needs to be researched. In this study, we proposed fault-tolerant scheme for DSM system and analyzed reliability and fault-tolerant overhead. Using our analysis, we can choose a proper algorithm for DSM on error prone environment.

  • The most space-consuming element of digital image processing system is the video memory. Though this problem is solved by DRAMs, timing constraints posed by video data rates. The cycle time of DRAMs can be diminished by serial transferring and reading or writing pixel datas at the same time. This paper resents the design of 1024${\times}$512 video memory using this technique.

  • This paper presents implementation of parallel processing system for image processing. The parallel processing system proposed consisted of 16 processing elements, and multi-access memory system, and interface modules. The multi-access memory system we introduced is made up of a memory module selection, a data routing module, and an address calculation and routing module.

  • As the flash memory has increased the market share of data storage in imbedded system and occupied the most of area in a system, It has a profound impact on system reliability. Flash memory is divided NOR/NAND-type according to the cell array structure, and is classified as SLC(Single Level Cell)/MLC(Multi Level Cell) according to reference voltage. Although NAND-type flash memory is slower than NOR-type, but it has large capacity and low cost. Also, By the effect of demanding mobile market, MLC NAND-type is widely adopted for the purpose of the multimedia data storage. Accordingly, Importance of fault detection algorithm is increasing to ensure MLC NAND-type flash memory reliability. There are many researches about the testing algorithm used from traditional RAM to SLC flash memory and it detected a lot of errors. But the case of MLC flash memory, testing for fault detection, there was not much attempt. So, In this paper, Extend SLC NAND-type flash memory fault detection algorithm for testing MLC NAND-type flash memory and try to reduce these differences.

A Study on the Data Acquisition by Bit Conversion Method (비트변환방식을 이용한 데이터 취득에 관한 연구)

  • This paper deals with a new bit conversion method. When 12 bit AID converter is adapted to 16 bit micro-computer, complicated data aquisition method is not necessary to acquire the AID converted data into memory of computer. However, when the 12 bit AID converter is adapted to the 8 bit micro-computer 12 bit data should be divided into 4 bit data and 8 bit data. Therefore the old data-dividing method made 4 bitl2byte of memory space wasted. On the contrary, using the new bit conversion method suggested in this paper the two of 12 bit data are converted into 3 byte of data without extending the AID conversion time.

Characterization Studies on Data Access Bias in Mobile Platforms

  • Data access bias can be observed in various types of computing systems. In this paper, we characterize the data access bias in modern mobile computing platforms. In particular, we focus on the access bias of data observed at three different subsystems based on our experiences. First, we show the access bias of file data in mobile platforms. Second, we show the access bias of memory data in mobile platforms. Third, we show the access bias of web data and web servers. We expect that the characterization study in this paper will be helpful in the efficient management of mobile computing systems.

Index Management Method using Page Mapping Log in B+-Tree based on NAND Flash Memory (NAND 플래시 메모리 기반 B+ 트리에서 페이지 매핑 로그를 이용한 색인 관리 기법)

  • NAND flash memory has being used for storage systems widely, because it has good features which are low-price, low-power and fast access speed. However, NAND flash memory has an in-place update problem, and therefore it needs FTL(flash translation layer) to run for applications based on hard disk storage. The FTL includes complex functions, such as address mapping, garbage collection, wear leveling and so on. Futhermore, implementation of the FTL on low-power embedded systems is difficult due to its memory requirements and operation overhead. Accordingly, many index data structures for NAND flash memory have being studied for the embedded systems. Overall performances of the index data structures are enhanced by a decreasing of page write counts, whereas it has increased page read counts, as a side effect. Therefore, we propose an index management method using a page mapping log table in $B^+$-Tree based on NAND flash memory to decrease page write counts and not to increase page read counts. The page mapping log table registers page address information of changed index node and then it is exploited when retrieving records. In our experiment, the proposed method reduces the page read counts about 61% at maximum and the page write counts about 31% at maximum, compared to the related studies of index data structures.

  • This paper proposes a consistency algorithm that is able to serve streaming data efficiently in VOD system. The media data is stripping into several pieces of data by the Round Robin method in order to media data service. The barrier mechanism is changed into the minimum data factor(SH. GOP) in this paper. The shared memory is allocated at one host with one fragment size. Data is combined with RTP packet transmission data format using barrier mechanism. I experiment and program the suggested algorithm on the VOD system.

Finding Frequent Itemsets Over Data Streams in Confined Memory Space (한정된 메모리 공간에서 데이터 스트림의 빈발항목 최적화 방법)

  • Due to the characteristics of a data stream, it is very important to confine the memory usage of a data mining process regardless of the amount of information generated in the data stream. For this purpose, this paper proposes the Prime pattern tree(PPT) for finding frequent itemsets over data streams with using the confined memory space. Unlike a prefix tree, a node of a PPT can maintain the information necessary to estimate the current supports of several itemsets together. The length of items in a prime pattern can be reduced the total number of nodes and controlled by split_delta $S_{\delta}$. The size and the accuracy of the PPT is determined by $S_{\delta}$. The accuracy is better as the value of $S_{\delta}$ is smaller since the value of $S_{\delta}$ is large, many itemsets are estimated their frequencies. So it is important to consider trade-off between the size of a PPT and the accuracy of the mining result. Based on this characteristic, the size and the accuracy of the PPT can be flexibly controlled by merging or splitting nodes in a mining process. For finding all frequent itemsets over the data stream, this paper proposes a PPT to replace the role of a prefix tree in the estDec method which was proposed as a previous work. It is efficient to optimize the memory usage for finding frequent itemsets over a data stream in confined memory space. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is analyzed by a series of experiments to identify its various characteristics.

Efficient Metadata Management Scheme in NAND Flash based Storage Device (플래시 메모리기반 저장장치에서 효율적 메타데이터 관리 기법)

  • Recently, NAND flash based storage devices are being used as a storage device in various fields through hiding the limitations of NAND flash memory and maximizing the advantages. In particular, those storage devices contain a software layer called Flash Translation Layer(FTL) to hide the "erase-before-write" characteristics of NAND flash memory. FTL includes the metadata for managing the data requested from host. That metadata is stored in internal memory because metadata is very frequently accessed data for processing the requests from host. Thus, if the power-loss occurs, all data in memory is lost. So metadata management scheme is necessary to store the metadata periodically and to load the metadata in the initialization step. Therefore we proposed the scheme which satisfies the core requirements for metadata management and efficient operation. And we verified the efficiency of proposed scheme by experiments.
