  • In the present study, a CFD/DSMC hybrid method performed by a coupled analysis between the CFD method and the DSMC method was developed to obtain the flow information on the rarefied gas flows effectively. Flow simulations around the high speed vehicles on the transition flow regimes were conducted by using the developed method. The FRESH-FX vehicle made of cone and cylinder shapes was considered for the simulations. The results of the hybrid method were compared with the results of the pure CFD and the pure DSMC method to confirm the reliability and efficiency of the hybrid method. It was found that the gradient and the intensity of the shock waves were weakened due to the relatively low density on the transition flow regime. It was confirmed that the results of the hybrid analysis were different to those of the pure CFD analysis and almost identical to those of the pure DSMC analysis. In addition, the computational time of the hybrid method was reduced than that of the pure DSMC method. As a result, it was obtained that the validity and the efficiency of the CFD/DSMC hybrid method.

  • DSMC method is now widely accepted CFD approach to compute and simulate the nozzle plume in rarefied regimes. In this study, using SMILE(Statistical Modeling in Low-density Environment) code which was developed in ITAM, Russia and coded using DSMC method, the internal flow of the Rothe micronozzle was simulated. Moreover, to show the validity of the SMILE code, the centerline temperatures according to the Reynold's number were compared with the ones obtained by the Rothe's experiment.

  • The aerodynamic coefficients of Apollo capsule are calculated using a DSMC solver, SMILE, and the results agree very well with the data predicted by NASA. The aerodynamic characteristics of an orbital block which operates at high altitudes in the free molecule regime are also predicted. For the nominal flow conditions, the predicted aerodynamic force is very small since the dynamic pressure is extremely low. And the additional aerodynamic coefficients for the analysis of the attitude control are presented as the angle of attack and the side slip angle vary from $+45^{\circ}\;to\;-45^{\circ}$ of the nominal angle.

  • To study the plume effects in the rarefied region, the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method is usually adopted because the plume field usually contains the entire range of flow regime from the near-continuum in the vicinity of nozzle exit through transitional state to free molecular at far field region from the nozzle. The objective of this study is to investigate the behaviors of a small monopropellant thruster plume in the rarefied region numerically using DSMC method. To deduce accurate results efficiently, the preconditioned scheme is introduced to calculate continuum flow fields inside thruster to predict nozzle exit properties used for inlet conditions of DSMC method. By combining these two methods, the rarefied flow characteristics of plume such as strong nonequilibrium near nozzle exit, large back flow region, etc, can be investigated.

  • The satellite payloaded on the 2nd stage of KSLV-I is planned to perform CCAM(Contamination and Collision Avoidance Maneuver) not to collide with KM(Kick Motor). At the moment, the satellite should pass through low density environment not to be contaminated by KM plume due to residual thrust. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the flow field of KM plume by residual thrust. In this paper, DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte-Carlo) method, which is widely accepted to simulate in rarefied regime, is used to compute the density field of KM plume by residual thrust and the result of DSMC simulation was compared with that of FLUENT to validate it.

  • The interaction between hypersonic free stream and side jet flow at high altitudes is investigated by using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. In order to alleviate the difficulty associated with the large density difference between the free stream and the side jet flow and to simulate the two flows simultaneously, a weighting factor technique is applied. For validation, the corner flow over a pair of plates perpendicularly attached is calculated with and without a side jet, and the results are compared with experiment. For a more realistic configuration, the flow past a blunted cone cylinder shape is solved. The leeward or windward jet is injected into the free stream and the effect on the aerodynamic force and moment is observed at various flow angles. The lambda shock effect and the wake structure are studied in terms of the surface pressure differential. A higher interaction between the free stream and the side jet flow is observed when the side jet is injected in the windward direction.

  • In the present study, a parallel DSCM technique based on a cell-based data structure is developed for the efficient simulation of rarefied gas flows especially od PC clusters. Dynamic load balancing is archieved by decomposing the computational domain into several sub-domains and accounting for the number of particles and the number cells of each domain. Mesh adaptation algorithm is also applied to improve the resolution of the solution and to reduce the grid dependency. It was demonstrated that accurate solutions can be obtained after several levels of mesh adapation starting from a coars initial grid. The method was applied to a two-dimensioanal supersonic leading-edge flow and the axi-symmetric Rothe nozzle flow to validate the efficiency of the present method. It was found that the present method is a very effective tool for the efficient simulation of rarefied gas flow on PC-based parallel machines.

  • In the present study, a 3-D Parallel DSMC method in developed on unstructured meshes for the efficient simulation of rarefied gas flows. Particle tracing between cells in achieved based on a linear shape function extended to three dimensions. For high parallel efficiency, successive domain decomposition is applied to achieve load balancing between processors by accounting for the number of particles. A particle weighting technique is also adopted to handle flows containing gases of significantly dirrerent number densities in the same flow domain. Application is made for flow past a 3-D delta wing and the result is compared with that from experiment and other calculation. Flow around a rocket payload at 100km altitude is also solved and the effect of plume back flow from the nozzle in studied.
