  • The performance of direct-sequence spread spectrum(DS-SS) receiver may be enhanced by using the digital whitening filter. In this paper, the hard limited feedback whitening filter that whiten the interference and noise alone is proposed to obtain the additional resistance to narrowband interference. The recursive solution for the calculation of tap weights is presented and the expression for SNR and BER is derived and compared with the conventional digital whitening filter. As the result of computer simulation it is proved that the error performance is improved considerably.

  • We propose an efficient method for updating the inverse of the signature waveform cross-correlations (SWC) matrix when the number of users in the synchronous direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS/CDMA) system changes. It is shown that the computational complexity of the proposed method is $O(n^2)$ in which n represents the number of active users in the system.

  • In this paper, a specification for wireless LAN MODEM using direct sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) technique is presented. Some algorithms and hardware architectures for an efficient implementation of the DS/SS MODEM are suggested. In the method, all baseband signal processing are done digitally for single chip implementation. Schemes of DQPSK baseband modulation/demodulation, despreading with digital matched filter, digital timing recovery, and efficient carrier sensing are among the discussed algorithms. We also performed various kinds of simulations to evaluate the system performance and to extract parameters for hardware implementation. In addition, the pictorial view of ASIC of the SS MODEM is also shown.

  • In this paper, we analyze and simulate performance of space time block coded (STBC) binary pulse amplitude modulation-direct sequence (BPAM-DS) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems with double binary turbo code in indoor environments for various ubiquitous healthcare (u-healthcare) applications. Indoor wireless channel is modeled as a modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) model proposed as a UWB indoor channel model by the IEEE 802.15.SG3a in July 2003. In the STBC encoding process, an Alamouti algorithm for real-valued signals is employed because UWB signals have the type of real signal constellation. It is assumed that the transmitter has knowledge about channel state information. From simulation results, it is shown that the STBC scheme does not have an influence on improving bit error probability performance of the BPAM-DS UWB systems. It is also confirmed that the results of this paper can be applicable for u-healthcare applications.

  • A new analytic framework based on a linear algebra approach is proposed for examining the performance of a direct sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) slotted ALOHA wireless communication network systems with delay capture. The discrete-time Markov chain model has been introduced to account for the effect of randomized time of arrival (TOA) at the central receiver and determine the evolution of the finite population network performance in a single-hop environment. The proposed linear algebra approach applied to the given Markov problem requires only computing the eigenvector ${\prod}$ of the state transition matrix and then normalizing it to have the sum of its entries equal to 1. MATLAB computation results show that systems employing discrete TOA randomization and delay capture significantly improves throughput-delay performance and the employed analysis approach is quite easily and staightforwardly applicable to the current analysis problem.

  • In this paper, perfodrmance of matched-filter (MF) acquisition scheme is analyzed for a direct-sequence/code-division-multiple-access (DS/CDMA) system in a microcellular environment. Mean acquistion time is used as a performance measure. It is demonstrated that acquisition performance is enhanced using interference suppression filter in a Rician fading channel. To apply for multiuser environments, multiple access interference is considered in the performance analysis. From the numerical results, it is shown that mean acquistion time decreases with the increasing SNR/chip, and acquisition performance is improved as the number of taps of interference suppression filter. It is also shown that mean acquisition time increases with the number of users in the system, and acquistion performance is degraded as the icrease of narrowband interference bandwidth. The analysis in this paper can be applied to a DS/CDMA overlay environment.

  • The study on the chip waveform design to minimize multiple-access interference (MAI) and its performance evaluation are very important since chip waveform decides the signal quality and system capacity of the direct-sequence CDMA wireless communication system. This paper suggests the analytical chip waveform to minimize the MAI. The BER and throughput performances achieved by the proposed analytical optimum chip waveform are compared with those of the conventional chip waveforms in the Nakagami-m distribution frequency selective channel when the differential phase shift keying (DPSK) is employed in DS-CDMA system. From the numerical results, capacity and throughput are improved about 2 times and 1.4 times respectively when it is compared with the Kaiser chip waveform that is considered as one of the best in the conventional ones.

  • MC-CDMA, a multicarrier (MC) modulation scheme based on code division multiple access (CDMA), is the most likely candidate for the next generation of mobile radio communications. The rate compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) coded hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) has been found to give improved throughput performance in a direct sequence (DS) CDMA system. However, the extent to which the RCPT HARQ improves the throughput performance of an MC-CDMA system has not been fully understood. In this paper, we apply the RCPT HARQ to MC-CDMA and evaluate by computer simulations its performance in a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel. We found that the performance of RCPT HARQ MC-CDMA is almost insensitive to channel characteristics. The performance can be drastically improved with receive diversity combined with space-time transmit diversity. In addition, the comparison of RCPT HARQ MC-CDMA, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, and DS-CDMA shows that under similar conditions the throughput of MC-CDMA is the best in a frequency selective fading channel.
