Estimation of Oceanic Total Precipitable Water from HALE UAV (고고도 장기체공무인기 운영고도에서 해양 총가강수량 추정)

  • In this study, the oceanic Total Precipitable Water (TPW) retrieval algorithm at 16 km altitude of High Altitude Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (HALE UAV) is described. Empirical equation based on Wentz method (1995) that uses the 18.7 and 22.235 GHz channels is developed using the simulated brightness temperature and SeeBor training dataset. To do radiative simulation, Satellite Data Simulator Unit (SDSU) Radiative Transfer Model (RTM) is used. The data of 60% (523) and 40% (349) in the SeeBor training dataset are used to develop and validate the TPW retrieval algorithm, respectively. The range of coefficients for the TPW retrieval at the altitude of 3~18 km with 3 km interval were 153.69~199.87 (${\alpha}$), 54.330~58.468 (${\beta}$), and 84.519~93.484 (${\gamma}$). The bias and RMSE at each altitude were found to be about $-0.81kg\;m^{-2}$ and $2.17kg\;m^{-2}$, respectively. Correlation coefficients were more than 0.9. Radiosonde observation has been generally operated over land. To validate the accuracy of the oceanic TPW retrieval algorithm, observation data from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Gisang 1 research vessel about six clear sky cases representing spring, autumn, and summer season is used. Difference between retrieved and observed TPW at 16 km altitude were in the range of $0.53{\sim}1.87kg\;m^{-2}$, which is reasonable for most applications. Difference in TPW between retrieval and observation at each altitude (3~15 km) is also presented. Differences of TPW at altitudes more than 6 km were $0.3{\sim}1.9kg\;m^{-2}$. Retrieved TPW at 3 km altitude was smaller than upper level with a difference of $-0.25{\sim}0.75kg\;m^{-2}$ compared to the observed TPW.

Varietal Difference in Growth, Yield and Grain Quality of Rice Grown at Different Altitudinal Locations

  • Growth and quality of rice are affected by various factors including the location of cultivation. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of altitudinal locations on the growth and yield-related components of rice. Nineteen Japonica type varieties were grown at Iksan (altitude, 10 m), Imsil (altitude, 150 m), Jinan (altitude, 275 m) and Jangsu (altitude, 430 m) at a similar latitude in Jeonbuk province in the south western Korea. Minimum air temperature showed a strong negative correlation with altitude. The morphological traits and yield-and quality-related components were analyzed. Longer days to heading was required at higher altitudes. However, culm length, panicle length, panicle number, grain number and rice yield were reduced at higher altitudes. Protein content of brown rice increased but fatty acid content decreased at higher altitudes. Amylose content was affected by neither the altitude nor the ecotype. Palatability of polished rice tends to be improved at higher altitudes and in early-maturing ecotypes but its relationships with altitude and ecotype were not significant. Head rice ratio was lower at higher altitudes but broken rice ratio vise versa. These results indicate that growth and quality of rice are affected significantly by changes in temperatures at the locations of different altitude. Also, the characters related to yield and quality of rice often respond incompatibly to the changes in altitudes. These results could provide valuable information for the strategic planning of rice production in geographically diverse areas.

  • Reduction of the atmospheric pressure in high altitude affects brake booster system which was operated by the difference between the intake pressure and the atmospheric pressure. So, braking system can not stably perform due to decrease of brake boost pressure. In this study, effects of altitude change on engine intake pressure was analyzed by prediction model of engine intake pressure which was studied previously. And engine intake pressure was simulated by simulation model in various driving conditions and environmental conditions.

Expert-Novice Differences in Reading and Predicting Visual Information in Air Traffic Control (항공관제 전문성 수준에 따른 시각정보 판독과 미래정보 예측 차이)

  • Many studies have shown that having perception of spatial information is important for air traffic control officer (ATCO) since it helps them understand the current situation and predict the situation it leads to. However, little or no research has been done to investigate if there is any difference at the levels of expertise in perceiving spatial information and predicting a prospective situation. This study investigates the difference between expert and novice ATCO groups in how accurately each group of ATCO perceive spatial information such as position, altitude, speed, and flying direction, and predicting such information they will encounter shortly. In completing a task to watch the movement of airplanes displayed on the computer monitor as a blip, the participants were asked to predict the position, speed, and the altitude of the aircraft in a minute by marking on the sector map. The results show that the expert group performed better in accuracy and had tendency to overestimate on position and altitude; however, no significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of reading a flying direction. Therefore reading a flying direction may not be a reliable indicator to judge expertise of ATCO. But the expert group shows better predicting performance by perceiving spatial information such as airplane's position and altitude with feeling on time. The study suggests that it is important to enhance perceptive skills in ATCO training in improving their expertise in predicting accuracy traffic situation, preventing from air collision, and improving productivity for more efficient air traffic flow. A further study on the relationship between the perception of spatial information and the sense of time in predicting future information and effectiveness as an independent factor would contribute to providing more insights into expertise of ATCOs.

Evaluation of Rain Gauge Distribution Characteristics by Altitude using Optimization Technique (최적화 기법을 통한 강우관측소의 고도별 분포특성 검토)

  • In this study, we estimate the NNI(Nearest Neighbor Index) which is considered altitude of rain gauge network as a method for evaluating appropriateness of spatial distribution and the current rain gauge network is evaluated. The altitude is divided by equal-area-ratio and optimal NNI within given basin condition is estimated using harmony search method for considering geographical conditions that vary from altitude to altitude. After calculating current state and optimal NNI for each altitude, the distribution of the rain gauge network is evaluated based on the difference between the two NNIs. As a result, it founds that the density of rain gauge networks is relatively thin as the altitude increases. Furthermore, it will be possible to construct an efficient rain gauge network if the characteristics of different altitudes are considered when a new rain gauge network is newly constructed.

Spatial Distribution of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Community by Altitude in Streams Located in Both Facing Slopes of the Mt. Seorak, Korea (설악산 양사면 하천에서의 고도차에 따른 저서성 대형무척추동물 군집의 공간 분포)

  • There are marked differences in climate condition between east-facing slopes and west-facing slopes in Mt. Seorak (1,708 m). This study was conducted to find out the differences of benthic macroinvertebrate communities between both slopes of Mt. Seorak. Quantitative (Surber net; $30cm{\times}30cm$, mesh: 1mm) and qualitative (Hand net; mesh: 1mm) samplings ware carried out seasonally in each site which had 100-meter-high difference from November 2010 to November 2011. Most of the survey sites showed sound environmental conditions because they were located in the protection area of the national park. The benthic macroinvertebrates collected from all survey sites were composed of 158 species, 62 families, 17 orders, 7 classes and 5 phyla. DCA (Detrended Correspondence Analysis) ordination based on the abundance of benthic mactoinvertebrates showed that altitude was a major factor governing the structure of benthic macroinvertebrate community. There was no significant difference of the communities between both slopes.

A Study on the Structure of Vegetation in Deokyusan National Park (덕유산국립공원 삼림식생구조에 관한 연구)

  • To investigate vegetation structure and succession of forest in the Deokyusan National Park, field survey was performed from July to September, 1992 and the results were as follows; The forest vegetation of Deokyusan National Park was classified into four communities by the factor of altitude. The successional trends of tree species by DCA ordination seem to be from Pinus densiflora to Carpinus laxiflora and Betula schmiatii and also, Quercus spp. through Cornus walter and Platycarya strobilacea to Q. mongolica, Abies holophylla and Taxus cuspidata. The diversity indices seemed to be affected by the factors of altitude. Especially, evenness showed several difference according to altitude. Comparing vegetation structure of lower layer for the recess system and one others, more number of species and species diversity were observed.

Multidimensional Scaling of Asymmetric Distance Matrices

  • In most cases of multidimensional scaling(MDS), the distances or dissimilarities among units are assumed to be symmetric. Thus, it is not an easy task to deal with asymmetric distances. Asymmetric MDS developed so far face difficulties in the interpretation of results. This study proposes a much simpler asymmetric MDS, that utilizes the notion of "altitude". The analogy arises in mountaineering: It is easier (more difficult) to move from the higher (lower) point to the lower (higher). The idea is formulated as a quantification problem, in which the disparity of distances is maximally related to the altitude difference. The proposed method is demonstrated in three examples, in which the altitudes are visualized by rainbow colors to ease the interpretability of users.

A numerical study on the chemically reacting flow at highly altitude (고 고도에서의 화학적 변화를 수반하는 기체 유동에 대한 수치해석적 연구)

  • In this paper the upwind flux difference splitting Navier-Stokes method has been applied to study quasi one-dimensional nozzle flow and axisymmetric sphere-cone($5^{\circ}$) flow for the perfect gas, the equilibrium and the nonequilibrium chemically reacting hypersonic flow. The effective gamma(${ \tilde{\gamma}}$), enthalpy to internal energy ratio was used to couple chemistry with the fluid mechanics for equilibrium chemically reacting air. The influences of the various altitude(30km, 50km) at Mach number(15.0, 20.0) were investigated. The equilibrium shock position was located farthest downstream when compared with those of perfect gas in a quasi one-dimensional nozzle. The equilibrium shock thickness over the blunt body region was much thinner than that of perfect gas shock.

Drone Image Quality Analysis According to Flight Plan

  • Drone related research has been increasing recently due to the development and distribution of commercial unmanned aerial vehicles. However, most of the previous studies focused on the accuracy and utility of drone surveying. For drones, the resolution of the result is determined according to the flight altitude, but since 70% of Korea is mountainous, it is necessary to analyze the quality of the drone image according to the flight plan. In this study, the quality of drone photogrammetry results according to flight plans was analyzed. The flight plan was established by fixed altitude and considering the height of the terrain. Images were acquired for both cases and data was processed to generate ortho images. As a result of evaluating the accuracy of the generated ortho image, the accuracy was found to be -0.07 ~ 0.09m. The accuracy of Case I and Case II did not show a significant difference, but for RMSE, Case I showed a good value. These results indicate that the drone flight plan affects the quality of the results. Also, when flying at a fixed altitude, II showed a lower value than the originally set overlap according to the altitude of the object. In future surveys using drones, flight planning taking into account the height of the object will contribute to the improvement of the quality of the results.
