Analysis of the Singular Point of Cyclic Voltammograms Recorded with Various Scan Rates

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation into the isoamperic point of cyclic voltammograms, which is defined as the singular point where the voltammograms of various scan rates converge. The origin of the unique point is first considered from a theoretical perspective by formulating the voltammetric curves as a system of linear equations, the solution of which indicates that a trivial solution is only available at the potential at which the net current is zero during the reverse potential scan. In addition, by way of a mathematical formulation, it was also shown that the isoamperic point is dependent on the switching potential of the potential scanning. To validate these findings, theoretical and practical cyclic voltammmograms were studied using finite-element based digital simulations and 3-electrode cell experiments. The new understanding of the nature of the isoamperic point provides an opportunity to measure the charge transfer effects without the influence of the mass transfer effects when determining the thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of a faradaic system.

  • The current-voltage characteristics at SrO${\cdot}6Fe_{2}O_{3}$ electronic ceramics interfaces have been studied using cyclic voltammetric methods. The symmetrical and stable cyclic voltammograms, which indicate the same anodic and cathodic process, are obtained on the whole experiments. The approximate saturation current is 50$\mu$A but the value depends on the experimental processes of the electrode specimens. The current-voltage characteristics of SrO${\cdot}6Fe_{2}O_{3}$ electronic ceramics in dilute aqueous electrolytes or double deionized water are determined by the water adsorption process and the interconnected porosity effect. On the other hand, the current-voltage characteristics in relatively concentrate aqueous electrolytes are determined by the ionic adsorption process and the related electrical double layers. The SrO${\cdot}6Fe_{2}O_{3}$ electronic ceramics can be directly used as an electrochemically stabled resistor, electrode or a humidity sensor.

Nucleation Process of Indium on a Copper Electrode

  • The electrodeposition of indium onto a copper electrode from an aqueous sulfate solution containing $In^{3+}$ was studied by means of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Reduction and oxidation of indium on copper were investigated by using cyclic voltammograms at different negative limiting potentials and at different scan rates in cumulative cycles. Cyclic voltammograms indicated that reduction and oxidation processes of indium could involve various reactions. Chronoamperometry was carried out to analyze the nucleation mechanism of indium in the early stage of indium electrodeposition. The non-dimensional plot of the current transients at different potentials showed that the shape of the plot depended on the applied potential. The nucleation of indium at potential step of -0.6~-0.8 V was close to progressive nucleation limited by diffusion. However the non-dimensional plot of current transients for the indium nucleation showed different behaviors from theoretical curves at the potential step lower than -0.8 V.

A Cyclic Voltammetric Study of Electrodes for Reverse Electrodialysis

  • In this study, the electrochemical investigation of various electrodes for reverse electrodialysis using potassium ferrocyanide and potassium ferricyanide as a redox system was carried out. Cyclic voltammetry was the employed method for this electrochemical study. From the results of cyclic voltammograms for various electrode materials, i.e., Au, Vulcan supported Pt, activated carbon, carbon nanofiber, Vulcan, the Vulcan electrode showed the lowest overpotential, but the Pt electrode having slightly higher overpotential obtained slightly higher anodic and cathodic current densities for the $Fe(CN)_6{^{4-}}/Fe(CN)_6{^{3-}}$ redox couple. The cyclic voltammograms for the Vulcan electrode confirmed very good electrochemical reversibility and kinetic behavior. As a result, among the electrode materials, the Vulcan electrode is the most promising electrode material for reverse electrodialysis.

  • In this study, we prepared electrodes containing ionic liquid for high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Effects of ILs on electrochemical properties of the electrodes were investigated carrying out measurement of cyclic voltammograms of the various electrodes with the content of IL in a strong supporting electrolyte. As the ILs content increased in electrodes, electrochemical surface area(ESA) decreased due to the leakage of ILs from Nafion ionomer. In addition, two case of cyclic voltammograms under two simulated environment, i.e. IL leakage from Nafion ionomer in I) electrode and ii) polymer electrolyte, were investigated. As a result, IL leakage from polymer electrolyte showed worse results in electrochemical properties of the electrode.

A New Accurate Equation for Estimating the Baseline for the Reversal Peak of a Cyclic Voltammogram

  • Here we propose a new equation by which we can estimate the baseline for measuring the peak current of the reverse curve in a cyclic voltammogram. A similar equation already exists, but it is a linear algebraic equation that over-simplifies the voltammetric curve and may cause unpredictable errors when calculating the baseline. In our study, we find a quadratic algebraic equation that acceptably reflects the complexity included in a voltammetric curve. The equation is obtained from a laborious numerical analysis of cyclic voltammetry simulations using the finite element method, and not from the closed form of the mathematical equation. This equation is utilized to provide a virtual baseline current for the reverse peak current. We compare the results obtained using the old linear and new quadratic equations with the theoretical values in terms of errors to ascertain the degree to which accuracy is improved by the new equation. Finally, the equations are applied to practical cyclic voltammograms of ferricyanide in order to confirm the improved accuracy.

기능성 유기 LB단분자막의 전기화학적 연구 (Electrochemical Study of Functional Organic Monomolecular Film prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett Method)

  • An amphiphilic nitroxide radical(2,2'6,6'-tetramethyl-4-octadecyioxy-1-piperidinyloxyl, TEMOPO) or mixture of TEMOPO and arachidic acid(Icosanoic acid, AA), was spread on water surface by the Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) method and surface pressure-area curve was measured. Such monolayer films of TEMOPO were transferred onto surfaces of photo transferable tin oxide electrodes(PTTO) by the LB method under various surface pressure with the transfer ratio of larger than 0.95 at the surface pressure higher than 15mN/m. The electrochemical effect of functional nitroxy radical monolayer onto semi-conductive electrode to electrolyte have been investigated by using LB method. Cyclic voltammetry technique was used for the electrochemical behavior measurement of TEMOPO monolayer onto the PTTO in 0.18 mo1/$dm^3$ $H_2SO_4$ solutions. The shape of voltammograms was found to change from one electrode to another. The amount of charge for the oxidation and the re-reduction of the cation to TEMOPO were evaluated from graphical integration. The amounts of charge were always smaller than those predicted from the $\pi$-$\sigma$ curves though the transfer ratio was unity. The poor reproducibility of the cyclic voltammograms was improved by the mixing with AA. Structure and arrangement of monomolecular layer on water surface and electrode were studied. Characteristics of monolayer film applied for the mediation reaction was also discussed by electrochemical method.

  • 최근 반도체 소자의 고집적화와 나노 (nano) 크기의 회로 선폭으로 인해 기존에 사용되었던 텅스텐이나 알루미늄 금속배선보다, 낮은 전기저항과 높은 electro-migration resistance가 필요한 Cu 금속배선이 주목받게 되었다. 하지만, Cu CMP 공정 시 높은 압력으로 인하여 low-k 유전체막의 손상과 디싱과 에로젼 현상으로 인한 문제점이 발생하게 되었다. 본 논문에서는, $KNO_3$ 전해액의 농도가 Cu 표면에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위해 Tafel Curve와 CV (cyclic voltammograms)법을 사용하여 전기화학적 특징을 알아보았고 scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) 분석을 통해 금속표면을 비교 분석하였다.

  • 유해성 유기물을 효과적으로 분해시키는데 이용되는 Ag(II)이온에 의한 전기화학적 매개산화 공정의 한계전류밀도를 예측하기 위하여 질산전해질의 농도, Ag(I) 이온의 농도 및 온도변화에 따른 Ag(I)/Ag(II) 이온쌍의 cyclic voltammogram을 백금전극에서 얻었으며, 피크전류로부터 Ag(I) 이온의 확산계수를 구하였다. Ag(I)/Ag(II) 이온쌍의 산화환원 반응은 물 분해 반응에 의해 크게 영향을 받았으며 백그라운드 보정을 통하여 정확한 피크전류를 측정할 수 있었다. Ag(I) 이온의 확산계수를 질산용액의 점도 및 온도의 함수로 나타냄으로써 전기화학적 매개산화공정의 한계전류밀도를 용이하게 예측할 수 있는 실험식을 제시하였다.
