  • The computer program which predicts the gas exchange process of multi-cylinder 4-Stroke cycle spark-ignition engine, can be great assistance for the design and development of new engine. In this study, the computer program was developed to predict the gas exchange process of multi-cylinder four stroke cycle spark ignition engine including intake and exhaust systems. When gas exchange process is to be calculated, the evaluation of the variation of the thermo-dynamic properties with time and position in the intake and exhaust systems is required. For the purpose, the application of the generalized method of characteristics to the gas exchange process is known as one of the method. The simulation model developed was investigated to the analysis of the branch system of multi-cylinder. The models used were the 2-zone expansion model and single zone model for in cylinder calculation and the generalized method of characteristic including area change, friction, heat transfer and entropy gradients for pipe flow calculation. The empirical constants reduced to least number as possible were determined through the comparison with the experimented indicator diagram of one particular operation condition and these constants were applied to other operating condition. The predicted pressures in cylinder were compared with the experimental results over the wide range of equivalence ratio and ignition timing. The predicted values have shown good agreement with the experimental results. The thermodynamic properties in the intake and exhaust system were predicted over the wide range of equivalence ratio and ignition timing. The obtained results can be summarized as follows. 1. Pressures in the exhaust manifold have a little influence on the equivalence ratio, a great influence on the ignition timing. 2. Pressures in the inlet manifold are nearly unchanged by the equivalence ratio and the ignition timing. 3. In this study, the behaviors of the exhaust temperature, gas in the exhaust manifold were ascertained.

  • Monitoring the global Gross Primary Pproduction (GPP) is relevant to understanding the global carbon cycle and evaluating the effects of interannual climate variation on food and fiber production. GPP, the flux of carbon into ecosystems via photosynthetic assimilation, is an important variable in the global carbon cycle and a key process in land surface-atmosphere interactions. The Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is one of the primary global monitoring sensors. MODIS GPP has some of the problems that have been proven in several studies. Therefore this study was to solve the regional mismatch that occurs when using the MODIS GPP global product over Korea. To solve this problem, we estimated each of the GPP component variables separately to improve the GPP estimates. We compared our GPP estimates with validation GPP data to assess their accuracy. For all sites, the correlation was close with high significance ($R^2=0.8164$, $RMSE=0.6126g{\cdot}C{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, $bias=-0.0271g{\cdot}C{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$). We also compared our results to those of other models. The component variables tended to be either over- or under-estimated when compared to those in other studies over the Korean peninsula, although the estimated GPP was better. The results of this study will likely improve carbon cycle modeling by capturing finer patterns with an integrated method of remote sensing.

  • We investigate the solar cycle variation of microwave and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) intensity in latitude to compare microwave polar brightening (MPB) with the EUV polar coronal hole (CH). For this study, we used the full-sun images observed in 17 GHz of the Nobeyama Radioheliograph from 1992 July to 2016 November and in two EUV channels of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) $193{\AA}$ and $171{\AA}$ on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from 2011 January to 2016 November. As a result, we found that the polar intensity in EUV is anti-correlated with the polar intensity in microwave. Since the depression of EUV intensity in the pole is mostly owing to the CH appearance and continuation there, the anti-correlation in the intensity implies the intimate association between the polar CH and the MPB. Considering the report of Gopalswamy et al. (1999) that the enhanced microwave brightness in the CH is seen above the enhanced photospheric magnetic field, we suggest that the pole area during the solar minimum has a stronger magnetic field than the quiet sun level and such a strong field in the pole results in the formation of the polar CH. The emission mechanism of the MPB and the physical link with the polar CH are not still fully understood. It is necessary to investigate the MPB using high resolution microwave imaging data, which can be obtained by the high performance large-array radio observatories such as the ALMA project.

  • In order to find the effect of intertidal sediments on nutrient cycle in coastal environment, we measured ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate concentrations every hour during at least 12 hours in the entrance of Keunso Bay during four seasons. The content of ammonia and silicate do not change considerably with season, but nitrate shows large seasonal variation. In summer, nitrate concentration was much lower than in other seasons, which resulted from large biological uptake and active denitrification in intertidal sediments during summer. Phosphate also exhibit seasonal variations, but not that large like nitrate. N/P and N/Si ratios were lower in summer than in other seasons, which was due to active denitrification in the intertidal sediments during summer. For all seasons, ammonia concentrations were higher at low tide than at high tide, but nitrate concentrations were higher at high tide. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations measured in spring, summer, and winter were higher at high tide than at low tide, but in fall, they were higher at low tide than at high tide. For spring and winter, phosphate and silicate concentrations were higher at low tide than at high tide, while in summer and fall, they were higher at high tide than at low tide. In Keunso Bay, intertidal sediments affect significantly the nutrient cycle around the coastal areas. The intertidal sediments act as a source for ammonia and silicate, but as a sink for nitrate. However, phosphate is not considerably influenced by intertidal sediments.

  • Hot embossing, one of Nanoimprint Lithography(NIL) techniques, has been getting attention as an alternative candidate of next generation patterning technologies by the advantages of simplicity and low cost compared to conventional photolithographies. A typical hot embossing usually, however, takes more than ten minutes for one cycle of the process because of a long thermal cycling. Over the last few years a number of studies have been made to reduce the cycle time for hot embossing or similar patterning processes. The target of this research is to develop an induction heating apparatus for heating a metallic micro patterning mold at very high speed with the large-area uniformity of temperature distribution. It was found that a 0.5 mm-thick nickel mold can be heated from $25^{\circ}C\;to\;150^{\circ}C$ within 1.5 seconds with the temperature variation of ${\pm}5^{\circ}C$ in 4-inch diameter area, using the induction heating apparatus.

  • A novel characterization method was investigated to estimate the trap generation during the program /erase cycles in nand flash memory cell. Utilizing Fowler-Nordheim tunneling current, floating gate potential and oxide electric field, we established a quantitative model which allows the knowledge of threshold voltage (Vth) as a function of either program or erase operation time. Based on our model, the derived results proved that interface trap density (Nit) term is only included in the program operation equation, while both Nit and oxide trap density (Not) term are included in the erase operation equation. The effectiveness of our model was tested using 50 nm nand flash memory cell with floating gate type. Nit and Not were extracted through the analysis of Program/Erase speed with respect to the endurance cycle. Trap generation and cycle numbers showed the power dependency. Finally, with the measurement of the experiment concerning the variation of cell Vth with respect to program/erase cycles, we obtained the novel quantitative model which shows similar results of relationship between experimental values and extracted ones.

  • Unsteady lift measurements were carried out in order to investigate the effects of phase difference and reduced frequency of a dragonfly-type model with two pairs of wing. A load-cell was employed to measure the lift generated by a plunging motion of the dragonfly-type model with the incidence angles of 0$^{circ}$. Experimental conditions are as follows: phase differences between fore- and hind-wings are 0$^{circ}$, 90$^{circ}$, 180$^{circ}$, and 270$^{circ}$, and reduced frequencies are 0.075, 0.15 and 0.225, respectively. The freestream velocity was 143 m/sec and corresponding chord Reynolds number was $3.4{\times}10^3$. The variation of phase-averaged lift coefficients during one cycle of the wing motion is presented. Results show that the total value of the positive lift coefficient during one cycle of the wing motion is the largest at the phase difference of 90$^{circ}$, and that the maximum lift coefficient and lift coefficient per unit of time increases with reduced frequency.

  • To define the effect of strain rate variation from 0.04% to 0.004%/s on environmental fatigue of CF8M cast stainless steel, which is used as a primary piping material in nuclear power plants, low-cycle fatigue tests were conducted at operating pressure and temperature condition of a pressurized water reactor, 15 MPa and $315^{\circ}C$, respectively. A high-pressure and high-temperature autoclave and cylindrical solid fatigue specimens were used for the strain-controlled low-cycle environmental fatigue tests. It was observed that the fatigue life of CF8M stainless steel is shortened as the strain rate decreases. Due to the effect of test temperature, the fatigue data of NUREG-6909 appears a slightly shorter than that obtained by KEPRI at the same stress amplitude of $1{\times}10^3$ MPa. The environmental fatigue correction factor $F_{en}$'s calculated with inputs of the test data increases with high strain amplitude, while the $F_{en}$'s of NUREG-6909 remain constant regardless of strain amplitude.

  • Safety stocks constitute one of the major means of dealing with the uncertainties associated with variation in demand and lead time. Adeguate safety facilitate production activities and help to assure customers if good service on the other hand, carrying safety storks ties up working capital on goods that sit idle. The major problem of safety stocks management thus of consists of trying to achieve an optimal balance between the other carrying cost and the costs of stock shortage. Therefore, this study aims to find safety stock level of the fixed reorder quantity system and the fixed reorder cycle system of minimizing total cost when both demand and lead time are variable. (The distribution of demand and lead time is a mere assumption that follows the normal distribution) The results can be summarized as follows. i) Safety factor on the safety stock is determined by carrying cost and the costs of stock shortage: An optimal safety stick=the costs of stork shortage($C_s$) (the carrying cost($C_h$)+the costs of stock storage($C_s$). ii) The safety stock level of the fixed reorder quantity system is ($a{\;}_p\sqrt{L}{\sigma}$) under uncertainties. iii) The safety stock level of the fixed reorder cycle system is ($a{\;}_p\sqrt{R+L{\sigma}}$) under uncertain demand and constant lead time. ($a{\;}_p\sqrt{L{\sigma}_d{\;^2+{\mu}^2L{\sigma}^2}$) under demand and lead time uncertainties.

  • Temperature lapse rate within the planetary boundary layer shows a diurnal cycle with a substantial variation. The widely-used lapse rate value for the standard atmosphere may result in unaffordable errors if used in interpolating hourly temperature in complex terrain. We propose a simple method for estimating hourly lapse rate and evaluate whether this scheme is better than the conventional method using the standard lapse rate. A standard curve for lapse rate based on the diurnal course of temperature was drawn using upper air temperature for 1000hPa and 925hPa standard pressure levels. It was modulated by the hourly sky condition (amount of clouds). In order to test the reliability of this method, hourly lapse rates for the 500-600m layer over Daegwallyeong site were estimated by this method and compared with the measured values by an ultrasonic temperature profiler. Results showed the mean error $-0.0001^{\circ}C/m$ and the root mean square error $0.0024^{\circ}C/m$ for this vertical profile experiment. An additional experiment was carried out to test if this method is applicable for the mountain slope lapse rate. Hourly lapse rates for the 313-401m slope range in a complex watershed ('Hadong Watermark 2') were estimated by this method and compared with the observations. We found this method useful in describing diurnal cycle and variation of the mountain slope lapse rate over a complex terrain despite larger error compared with the vertical profile experiment.
