  • Sensor nodes are the most significant part of a wireless sensor network that offers a powerful combination of sensing, processing, and communication. One major challenge while designing a sensor node is power consumption, as sensor nodes are generally battery-operated. In this study, we proposed the design of a low-power, long range-based wireless sensor node with flexibility, a compact size, and energy efficiency. Furthermore, we improved power performance by adopting an efficient hardware design and proper component selection. The Nano Power Timer Integrated Circuit is used for power management, as it consumes nanoamps of current, resulting in improved battery life. The proposed design achieves an off-time current of 38.17309 nA, which is tiny compared with the design discussed in the existing literature. Battery life is estimated for spreading factors (SFs), ranging from SF7 to SF12. The achieved battery life is 2.54 years for SF12 and 3.94 years for SF7. We present the analysis of current consumption and battery life. Sensor data, received signal strength indicator, and signal-to-noise ratio are visualized using the ThingSpeak network.

  • With current real economic growth of more than 10% per year, the Chinese energy consumption is rapidly increasing. Coal supply consists of the vast majority of China's total energy consumption requirements in 2008. China, the largest energy consumer, is expected to be heavily dependent on coal for future power generation, too (IEA,2009). A growing concern on global warming, on the other hand, drives Chinese government to declare her commitment to the reduction of CO2 emission by 2020. In this paper, China's energy market is examined for the current and future primary energy mix. Coal is found to be the biggest part accounting for 68.7% of total primary energy consumption while coal-fired power accounts for over 80% of the total power generation. The importance of Clean Coal Technology is being discussed based on the findings of the importance of coal in China's economy and its sustainable development. Among the technologies involved, a brief investigation of IGCC(Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) technology with a review on current IGCC projects in China are provided from the perspective of environmental benefits. Studies on regional Chinese power market is also conducted. It is found that the regulated power tariff in electricity system makes the power suppliers suffer from financial loss and changes in the electricity price system is under serious consideration by Chinese government. Even though Chinese power market system causes difficulties of commercialization for IGCC technology, the potential benefits will be high due to China's huge requirements of power generating capacity and its heavy reliance on coal if the electricity price system can be changed smoothly.

  • The Korean dairy industry has been developed continuously for the past seventy years both in quality and quantity; now the total amount of dairy products accounts for 13 percent of that of livestock production - a remarkable turnover. Korea now stands at the 13th economic power around the world and it is inevitable that we must pursue an open-door policy at a global level; the dairy industry should also strengthen its potentialities in the long term in order to compete with advanced dairy countries. It is predicted that the impact of DDA agreement and FTA negotiations on the domestic dairy industry will be great; so it is urgently needed that we should reconsider the current status of the dairy industry and comprehensive mesures for dairy industry development to improve its international competitiveness. Such measures comprise the three aspects: first, reforming the policy of dairy industry-related systems, second, improving the productivity and third, expanding the consumption of dairy products. In terms of the system reforming, the most important things are, above all, the planned production relevant to market needs, the milk supply and demand management, and the raw milk transaction method. Secondly, the appropriate scale of management is important for the enhancement of productivity together with the modernization of dairy facilities. Thirdly, step-up effort is needed to expand the milk consumption; especially, more milk should be provided to the students by improving the standing milk ration system in middle and senior high schools. The government should make more effort to support and develop new dairy products tuned to consumers' taste, accelerating the publicity of diverse and steady milk consumption together with related organizations.

  • This study performed an analysis to determine if an individual can maintain the current consumption, in the case of a single retired elderly person's household using the accumulated assets. Assets are divided into three types, based on the behavioral economics life cycle hypothesis : financial assets, real assets excepting residential assets, and residential assets, and it is assumed that these assets were used on a step-by-step basis. Also, if the assets were sufficient, the maximum withdrawal amount was calculated. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the monetary assets were sufficient to cover the cost of living for 2.7 years, 6.4 years by using the real assets of the non-occupied housing, and 26.3 years in the case of residential property. Second, in the case of preferentially using the financial assets, 4.4% of the sample households were able to cover the cost of living. Households that were not able to cover the cost of living used the next-stage assets, real assets of the non-occupied housing. Households that were not able to cover the cost of living by financial assets liquidated the real assets with the exception of residential assets and used these to cover the cost of living. A total of 4.8% of the households were able to maintain the current cost of living through the second stage and 25.5% supplemented their funds by using residential assets. That is to say, 35% of the sample households were able to maintain the current level of living by using their assets.

  • In this paper, we present the design of a 20MHz bandwidth 3rd-order continuous-time low-pass sigma-delta modulator with low-noise and low-power consumption. The bandwidth of the system is sufficient to accommodate LTE and other wireless network standards. The 3rd-order low-pass filter with feed-forward architecture achieves the low-power consumption as well as the low complexity. The system uses 3bit flash quantizer to provide fast data conversion. The current-steering DAC achieves low-power and improved sensitivity without additional circuitries. Cross-coupled transistors are adopted to reduce the current glitches. The proposed system achieves a peak SNDR of 65.9dB with 20MHz bandwidth and power consumption of 32.65mW. The in-band IM3 is simulated to be 69dBc with 600mVp-p two tone input tones. The circuit is designed in a 0.18-um CMOS technology and is driven by 500MHz sampling rate signal.

  • This paper proposes a 12-bit SAR A/D(Successive Approximation Register Analog-to-Digital) converter that operates at low power for bio-signal and sensor signal processing. The conventional SAR A/D converter utilized the reduction of the dynamic current, which resulted in reducing total power consumption. In order to solve the limitation of the sampling time due to charging/discharging of the capacitor for reducing dynamic current, the different sampling time on the C-DAC bit switch operation was applied to reduce the dynamic current. In addition, lowering the supply voltage of the digital block to 0.6V led to 70% reduction of the total power consumption of the proposed ADC. The proposed SAR A/D was implemented with CMOS 65nm process 1-poly 6-metal, operates with a supply voltage of 1.2V. The simulation results demonstrate that ENOB, DNL/INL, power consumption and FoM are 10.4 bits, ±0.5LSB./±1.2LSB, 31.2uW and 2.8fJ/step, respectively.

  • Cylinder bore wear may not be a problem in most current automotive engines. However, a small change in cylinder bore diameter can significantly affect the lubrication characteristics and ring axial motion. This in turn can cause to change inter-ring pressure, blow-by and oil consumption in an engine. Therefore, by predicting the wear of piston ring face, ring groove and cylinder bore altogether, the changed ring end gap and the changed volume of gas reservoir can be calculated. Then the excessive oil consumption can be predicted. Being based on the calculation of gas flow amount by the theory of piston ring dynamics and gas flow, and the calculation of oil film thickness and friction force by the analysis of piston ring lubrication, the calculation theory of oil amount through top ring gap into combustion chamber will be set. This is estimated as engine oil consumption. Furthermore, the wear theories of ring, groove and cylinder bore are included. Then the each amount of wear is to be obtained. The changed oil consumption caused by the new end gap and the new volume of oil reservoir around second land, can be calculated at some engine running interval. Meanwhile, the wear amount and oil consumption occurred during engine durability cycle are compared with the calculated values. Next, the calculated amount of oil consumption and wear are compared with the guideline of each pare0s wear and oil consumption. So, the timing of part repair and engine life cycle can be predicted in advance without performing engine durability test. The wear data of cylinder bore diameter are obtained from three engines before and after engine durability test. The calculated wear data of cylinder bore diameter are turn out to be twice of the lower bound of averaged test values at TDC and the lower bound at BDC.

  • Globally, agriculture is one of the largest consumers and polluters of water resources, contributing to the unsustainable use of limited water resources. To reduce the resource use and environmental footprints associated with current and future food systems, researchers and policy makers have recommended the transition to sustainable and healthier diets and the reduction of food loss and waste along the food supply chain. However, there is limited information on the synergistic effects and trade-offs of adopting the two measures. In this study, we assessed the water-saving potential of the two measures in South Korea using environmentally extended input-output relying on the EXIOBASE database for the reference year 2020, along with scenario analysis to model the potential outcomes. Specifically, we analyzed scenarios where meat consumption was reduced by 30% and 50% and in combination with a 50% reduction in food waste at the consumption stage for each scenario. According to our findings, by considering individual measures of dietary change and food waste reduction, shifting to a diet with 30% and 50% less meat consumption could lead to reduction in water footprint by 6.9% and 7.5%, respectively, while 50% reduction in food waste at the consumption stage could save about 14% of water footprint. However, the synergistic effects of the two measures such as 30% less meat consumption and 50% food waste reduction, and 50% less meat consumption and 50% food waste reduction result to 20% and 24% reductions in water footprint, respectively. Moreover, our findings also showed that increasing food consumption with high environmental impacts could promote resources use inefficiency when waste occurs. Thus, policy strategies that address synergistic effects of both dietary change and food waste reduction should be strengthened to achieve sustainable food system. International and national policies can increase resource efficiency by utilizing all available reduction potentials while considering strategies interactions.

  • These days, SFCLs are being developed in order to limit fault current. However, the superconducting elements that limit the fault current have such problems as capacity increase and require auxiliary devices including cooling device. If devices that comprise the current power network can withstand fault current for at least one cycle, it is possible to limit the fault current with current limiting elements by bypassing it on the fault line. In this study, the fault current limiter was configured with current transformer, vacuum interrupter, and current limiting element. Through the experience, it was confirmed that the fault current was limited within one cycle. The superconducting element, as a current limiting element, limited the fault current by 80 % within one cycle from fault occurrence, and the passive element limited it more than 95 %. Also, through the comparison between resistance curve and power consumption curve, it was confirmed that the current limiting element using a passive element was more stable than the superconducting element that required capacity increase and other auxiliary devices. It was considered that the FCL proposed in this study could limit fault current stably within one cycle from fault occurrence by using the existing power technologies such as fault current detection and solenoid valve operating circuit.
