A newly developed rice variety "Pungmi 1" is a japonica rice(Oryza sativa L.) with high grain quality and multi-resistant to diseases. It was developed by the rice breeding team of Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI), RDA. in 2004. This variety derived from a cross between "YR13616Acp 1", having short culm and multi-resistance to biotic stresses and "Milyang 122" with good grain quality. It has short stature of 73cm in culm length and mid-early flowering date of Aug. 13. This variety is moderately resistant to leaf blast showing durable resistance of lower 10% diseased leaf araea in sequential planting meothod. Milled rice kernel of "Pungmi 1" is translucent, clear in chalkness and good at eating quality in panel test. Milling recovery and head rice ratios were comparable to Milyang 122, while it has low protein content. The milled rice yield potential of "Pungmi 1" is about 5.59 MT/ha at ordinary fertilizer level of local adaptability test. This cultivar would be adaptable to Yeongnam inland plains and southern coastal areas of Yeongnam province at ordinary transplanting as well as after barly cultivation.
The growth characteristics and appropriate fertilizer-managements in the rejuvenating bamboo grove were studied with Phyllostachys reticulata. The bamboo soil was the sandy loam with rich humus. In the fertilized plots, the N-fertilizer was significantly absorbed, and it was necessary to fertilize the K-fertilizer continuously. According to the development of rejuvenating after flowering, the temperature and relative illumination became lower. while the moisture became higher. The relationship between the diameter at eye height (D) and the culm length (H) of each bamboo can be expressed as follow; $H=2.5538D^{0.5031}$ The leaf area is the major factor for the production of the bamboo grove. Therefore in the rejuvenating grove, we should refrain form pruning or felling of not -flowering bamboo. The theoretical distribution of the internodal length was obtained by the distribution curve line of the internodal length derived from the regular distribution curve line. Relatively long and even internodal length was found in the fertilized plots 2 and 4. The relation between $D^2H$ and dry weight of culm or dry weight of the above ground part were given by linear regression in both relations respectively on the logarithmic coordinates, but the propertional relation was not established in these relations. The biomass of the above ground part obtained by the allometry method showed high values in the fertilized plots 2.5 and 6. The appropriate amounts of the three elements, N, P and K for the maximum dry matter were 24.19, 15.51, 8.63 kg/10a, respectively.
The effect of number of leaf after heading time on the growth of residual part and translocation of carbohydrates were investigated with water culture condition. Mutual shading and root rot were prevented. The results may be summerized as follows; 1. The ratio of ripened grain in the plot of no-leaf, flag leaf, two-leaf(flag and 2nd leaf) and three-leaf (flag, 2nd and 3rd leaf) was 38.8, 74.7, 83.9 and 87.0% respectively. The thousand grain weight was 21.3g, as the lowest value in no-leaf plot and was 28.7g in all other plots. 2. The accumulation of carbohydrate translocated in culm was increased by increment of leave-cutting, whereas the weight of culm was decreased. 3. It was suggested that healthy flag and 2nd leaf can keep the ratio of ripened grain around 80 percent.
This study was conducted 1)to determine the factors responsible for the gradually increased rice yield by examining any improvements in yield-related characters and physiological characters among the historically recommended varieties of rice in Korea, and 2)to reveal the way of achieving further yield improvement by breeding in the future. Eight recommended varieties from 1911 to 1988 were selected and grown at the same conditions. The yield-related characters were observed at the harvest time, and the physiological characters such as RGR, NAR, LAR, SLA and L WR were estimated by the classical method of growth analysis. The newer varieties are shorter and those released after 1970's are greater in percent of filled spikelets and harvest index than the older varieties. There are no definite changing trends in the variations of number of panicles per hill, number of spikelets per panicle and 1000 grain weight according to the course of evolution in the recommended varieties. There is little evidence of improvement in the physiological characters such as NAR, LAR, SLA and LWR among the recently developed varieties compared with those of the older varieties. The increase in grain yield due to variety improvement, if any, is largely associated with the greater harvest index and percent of filled spikelets by breeding blight resistant and / or lodging resistant genotypes with short culm. It is suggested that increase in NAR should be carried out simultaneously with increase in harvest index to breed high yielding genotypes. I t appears to be important to breed genotypes with long culm in order to enhance light penetration into the canopy as long as they are lodging resistant. Since NAR is negatively correlated with LAR, it is unlikely to succeed to improve both characters simultaneously. The direct effect of NAR on RGR by path analysis is much larger than that of LAR, and hence it is suggested that breeding genotype with large NAR is more effective on enhancing RGR. It is also suggested that improving LAR through LWR is likely effective on increasing RGR.

An introgression line, WH79006 was produced from a single plant from $BC_5F_3$ families from a cross between Hwaseongbyeo used as a recurrent parent and O. minuta (BBCC, Ace. No. 101154) as a donor parent, which was subsequently self-pollinated for three generations. WH79006 resembled the O. sativa parent, Hwaseongbyeo. However it differed from Hwaseongbyeo in several traits including days to heading, culm length, grain size, spikelets per panicle and fertility. These differences in the traits between WH79006 and Hwaseongbyeo can be attributed to the O. minuta introgressions. To detect the introgressions, 294 SSR markers of known chromosomal position have been used. At least, 28 introgressed chromosomal segments have been identified using SSR markers and they map to all chromosomes except chromosome 2. The size of the introgressed segments ranged from 4 to 35cM. A QTL related to culm length was detected using 75 $F_2$ plants from the Hwaseongbyeo/WH79006 cross. This QTL, cl6 located on chromosome 6 explained $9.6\%$ of the total phenotypic variation in the population. This QTL has not been detected in the previous QTL studies between Oryza sativa cultivars, indicating potentially novel alleles from O. minutan.
The straw of thirty one rice varieties were evaluated for their feed value and related agronomic traits. The rice straw were hand-harvested, dried to constant weight at $75^{\circ}C$ and ground through a 20 mesh seive in a Wiley mill, analyzed with crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF). Relative feed value (RFV) was calculated from NDF and ADF. The sum of standardized score was estimated by dry weight of rice straw, content of CP, ADF and NDF. The straw yield of Daeanbyeo was 725.9 kg/10a, showed heighest value among the varieties and remainder was in the order of Keumnambyeo, Donginbyeo #1 and Chucheongbyeo. Crude protein (CP) content in a Dasanbyeo was higher than those in other varieties. The content of ADF in a Junghwabyeo and NDF in a Sobaegbyeo were $34.3\%$ and $63.8\%$, respectively, showed lowest value among the varieties. The rice straw of Dunnaebyeo, Obongbyeo, Seoanbyeo, Keumobyeo, Hwaseongbyeo, Noganbyeo and Gyehwabyeo belonged to the high feed value varieties by estimation of cluster analysis, sum of standardized score and RFV. The content of CP was found to be positively related with dry weight of leaf and grain, but negatively related with heading days after seeding, culm length, specific leaf weight (SLW) and dry weight of stem. ADF and NDF were found to be positively related with heading days after seeding, culm length, SLW and dry weight of leaf, but negatively related with dry weight of stem. The sum of standardized score and RFV were the only positive relationship with dry weight of stem and negative relationship with other traits.

More stable and higher yields in rice paddy depend mainly upon an adequately balanced supply of water for higher yield. Rice paddy is supplied naturally by rainfall but inevitably requires artificial supplenental irrigation for higher yields. Even though it may be true that the water requirement of rice plants is generally higher than those of other crops, the submerged condition is not necessarily required for rice. The moisture requirements of rice vary according to its growing stages and it is possible to increse the irrigation efficiency by means of lessening the loss due to percolation and evapolation in the field. This experiment was conducted on the effect of the various amount of water supply and different irrigation periods for yield and yield components, and was carried out to find out the most suitable irrigation method and to increase the irrigation efficiency for higher yields in rice paddy. Randomized block design with 3 replications was employed where the 3 levels of the amount of irrigation water; (120% moisture contents), unirrigated (90~100%) and more un irrigated candition (80~90% moisture content), and levels of the various irrigation periods; usual, initial, intermediate and final periods, being treated. The results obtained in this experiment are as follows: 1. As for the physical and chemical and soil properfies, and other characteristics, there are no differences among the treatments enough to be effective for the growth of rice plants. 2. Culm length was measured after harvest as shown in table 2. 3. Difference of the amount of irrigation water did not change the culm length and ear length, however it also indicated more apparent increase in final treatment plots thatn that of usual. 3. No difference in the number of ears and number of ears pers per hill was founded treatments both in the difference of water supply and in the various irrigation periods. 4. There is no difference in the maturing rate and 1000 grains weight. 5. The number of panicles and grains and more increased in 80~100% moisture contents soil than those of 120%. and it shows in un irrigated plots, more irrigated plots and control plots in turn. Other wise according to the period\ulcorner of irrigation the trend is appeared in turn initial, usual, final and intermediate treatments.6. Yield as shown in table 7. 8 was more increased in unirrigated plots(90~IOO% moisture content) than the control plots (120% moisture content) by up to 8.2% and also 3. 2% in more unirrigated plots than that of control by periods is shown: usual plots final, initial, inter mediate treatment plots in turn. 7. The above resutts lead to the conclusion that no remarkable, differences in yields and soil properties are made by the unirrigation. However, it is apparent that this treatment has .some advantages in the points that one could spare the amount of water supply for irrigation with more increase in yield. In addition, a higher temperature and a brisk oxygen supply would be possible throug h this treatments. Accordingly, these treatment would be a more reasonable and economical cultivation method of rice for the better harvest.

The study was performed to investigate the effects of gaseous imission of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on the growth of rice plant under stressed field conditions. The plants were cultivated in normal paddy fields where are 88 industrial plants operating with 285 smoke stacks emitting pollutants. There has been a number of reported studies (1, 3, 11, 19, 20) which deal with rice plant damages by air pollution under a simulated exposure experimental condition. Furthermore, these experiments were conducted to examine effects of a single pollutant on the plant. Furthermore, these experiments were conducted to examine effects of a single pollutant on the plant. In korea, however, there is no study reported in literature with respect to the in-situ dose-response relationship between rice pant reduction in yields and air pollution. This study is specifically dealt with multiple effects of sulfur dioxde and hydrogen fluoride on various plant growth indicators such as leaf damage, culm height, weight of grain, panicles per hill, spikelets per panicle and percent fertility. It appears that there is a good correlation between ambient concentrations of sulfur oxides and sulfur contents found in leaves with an average correlation coefficient of 0.868 within a 1% significance level. It is interesting to note that a better multiple correlation was found between percent leaf damage and sulfur and fluoride contentd found in leaf with a significance of 1% level. The yearly correlation coefficient ranges from 0.963 to 0.987 with an average being 0.971. It is, therefore, believed that a percent leaf damage may serve as a single indicator of pollutional damages to rice plant cultivating in fields. Regarding other factors to the diminution of rice plant growth in polluted atmosphere, it appears that a significant correlation to culm length and dry weight of grain with a 1% significance level whereas T/R ratio has a good correlation with lead damage within 5% significance level. An evaluation of data observed has demonstrated that both panicles per hill and percent fertility are significantly affected by air pollutants. As expected, hydrogen fluoride has more effects than sulfur oxide. It is, however, interesting to note that spikelets per panicles has slightly been affected while no indication of effects on 1000-grain-weight has been observed. This may lead to a conclusion that a reduction in yield of rice under polluted field conditions may have more been caused by the diminution of panicles per hill and percent fertility rather than by the diminution of spikelets per panicle and grain weight.

This study was carried out to construct cold-tolerance characteristics. The RILs were developed from progenies of a cross between cold-susceptible Tongil-type rice variety, Milyang 23 and cold-tolerant Japonica rice variety, Stejaree 45 by single seed descent methods. The 175 RILs $(F_8)$ were evaluated for cold tolerance traits by field screening under cold-water irrigation. Frequency distribution of RILs in leaf discoloration, heading delay, culm length reduction and number of spikelets reduction displayed nearly normal distributions with transgressive segregations to either side of parents, while the spikelet fertility reduction and panicle exsertion at low-temperature showed the more or less skewed continuous distribution toward the susceptible parent. Higher heritabilities over $60\%$ were observed in leaf discoloration, spikelet fertility reduction, panicle exsertion, while relatively lower heritabilities less than $40\%$ were observed in culm length reduction, number of spikelets reduction and grain yield reduction. Some cold-tolerance RILs were selected effectively by cold water irrigation, which are expected to be good materials in breeding program for cold tolerance.
The method of direct seeding on flooded paddy surface in rice is known to be the most labor saving cultural practice in rice. However, this method has a problem in practical use such as severe lodging occurring at the reproductive growth stage. The objectives of this study were observated degree of field lodging and variation of lodging-related characteristics with different seeding dates. The number of seedlings per m$^2$ were from 91 to 144 plants, and seedling ratios were from ranged from 61.7% to 91.8%. Days from seeding to flowering were shortened from 5 to 15 days by the later seeding dates. Heading dates of Ilpumbyeo, Seoanbyeo, Daecheongbyeo and Donjinbyeo on June 9 showed slightly elapsed on the critical stable heading time from, August 28 to 29. The culm length was effective in longer clum varieties than semidwarf varieties. The degree field lodging (degree of lodging: 0~9< 9 : complete lodging) in Obongbyeo and S101 with semidwarf varieties were 0.17, whereas 1.25 in Dongjinbyeo with long culm. The lodging resistant varieties and later seeding dates shortened the length of fibrous in the clum, and thickened fibrous in the clum, respectively. Obongbyeo and Sl0l showed stronger resistance to field lodging. The lodging resistant varieties, Obongbyeo and Sl0l, showed lower values of lodging index from 1.03 to 1.15 than those of lodging susceptible varieties, Daecheongbyeo and Palgongbyeo ranged from 1.42 to 1.70. Bending moment with leaf sheath were greater in lodging resistant varieties (Obongbyeo and Sl0l),1510.0~1930.4g.cm, than those in the lodging susceptible varieties (Daecheongbyeo and Palgongbyeo), 1127.2~1287.6g.cm.
