  • This paper describes an experimental study and finite element analysis (FEA) carried out for investigating thermal deformation behavior of solders, resulting from temperature change in the solder. With such a goal in mind, a shear specimen that was composed of two metal bars having different coefficient of thermal expansion and solder blocks placed between two bars was designed and fabricated. Two different types of solder blocks, eutectic solder (Sn/36Pb/ 2Ag) and lead-free solder (Sn/3.0Ag/0.5Cu) were tested as well. Fringe patterns for several temperature steps were recorded and analyzed for three temperature cycles using a real-time moir$\acute{e}$ setup. The experimental data was verified with FEA and used to evaluate the suitability for numerous solder constitutive models available in literatures. FEA employing Anand material model suggested by Darveaux et al. and Chang et al. were found to be in an excellent agreement with the experimental results for the eutectic solder and the lead-free solder, respectively. In addition, numerical predictions on bending displacement, shear strain and viscoplastic distortion energy are documented and viscoplastic deformation behavior of two types of solder material are compared.

  • A selective method for the determination of iron(III) ion with a sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) modified glassy carbon electrode was proposed. It was based on the electrostatic attraction and complexation of the SDS modifier, $(DS^-)_n-Fe^{3+}$. The determination of iron(III) ion was performed by a differential pulse voltammetry(DPV), and the reduction peak potential of $(DS^-)_n-Fe^{3+}$ was +0.466(${\pm}0.002$)V vs. Ag/AgCl. For the determination of iron(III) ion, a linear calibration curve was obtained within the iron(III) ion concentration range of $0.50{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}10{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$, and the detection limit was $0.14{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$. $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Mn^{2+}$ showed little or no effect on the determination of iron(III) ion, respectively. But, ion such as each $CN^- $ and $SCN^-$ interfered seriously.

  • We proposed a pyrometallurgical process to achieve gold alloy with an Au content of more than 80wt% from low grade (<35wt%) gold alloys. We performed the heat treatment at a temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs using Au35wt%-Ag5wt%-Cu60wt% gold alloys mixed with 1/2 weighed PbO and CaO flux by varying the ratio of PbO/(PbO+CaO) from 0 to 1. We investigated the change in content of the samples with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The EDS results showed that the Au content increased from 35.0wt% in the PbO-only sample to 86.7wt% (in the PbO/(PbO+CaO) 1:1 sample), while the other samples achieved more that 84wt%. In addition, the 2/3 flux ratio sample showed the lowest Ag loss into the flux. In the ToF-SIMS results, the PbO only and CaO only fluxes had Au+ peak intensities of 349 and 37, respectively. Although the CaO-only flux might be more favorable considering the loss of Au into the flux, we concluded that the amount of Au lost into the flux could be ignored. Our results imply that that the pyrometallurgical process using a mixed flux is an effective hydrometallurgical process.

  • A new coumarin-thiazolobenzo-crown ether based fluorogenic chemosensor BTC (1) was reported. The ion-selective binding properties of 1 with different alkali, alkaline earth metals and transitional metals were investigated in an ethanol-DMSO system. BTC (1) showed the highest binding constant toward $Hg^{2+}$ over $Ag^+$, $Pb^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$.

  • We investigated the interaction between polyynes (linear carbon chains) and various metal nanoparticles (Ag, Au, and Cu) to provide insight into the optical properties of metal-polyynes systems prepared by different experimental techniques. Polyynes were produced by laser ablation in deionized water, metal nanoparticles solutions, and copper chloride solution. Metal nanoparticles complexes with polyynes were analyzed by Raman, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and UV-vis spectroscopy.

  • In order to enhance performance, stability, and brightness of inorganic blue-light emitting EL device, barrier layer structure and pulsed laser annealing(PLA) treatment were introduced. The barrier layer structure was utilized for improving brightness of the device and instead of thermal annealing, pulsed laser annealing process was used. From this study, optimum barrier layer thickness and number of pulsed laser irradiation are established.

  • The fungi SFN 416 strain which produced a stable beta-glucosidase was isolated from nature and identified to Aspergillus niger. Optimal conditions of enzyme reaction were temperature 36C, pH-5.0, reaction time-40 minutes. The enzyme was stable below 60C and in the range of pH 4.5-6.5. The enzyme was greatly inhibitied by Ag+ and slightly activated by Ca2+ (0.5mM) and Cu2+ (5 mM).

  • We present the interfacial electronic structures of electrodeposited Cu and Fe on bare and 1,4-phenylene diisocyanide (PDI)-functionalized Au nanoisland templates (NITs), and Au and Ag nanoparticles on transition metal oxide supports. Our discussion is based on the depth-profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
