  • Printed electronics using printing process has broadened in all respects such as electrics (lighting, batteries, solar cells etc) as well as electronics (OLED, LCD, E-paper, transistor etc). Copper is considered to be a promising alternative to silver for printed electronics, due to very high conductivity at a low price. However, Copper is easily oxidized, and its oxide is non-conductive. This is the highest hurdle for making copper inks, since the heat and humidity that occurs during ink making and printing simply accelerates the oxidation process. A variety of chemical treatments including organic capping agents and metallic coating have been used to slow this oxidation. We have established synthetic conditions of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) which are resistant to oxidation and average diameter of 20 to 50nm. Specific resistivity should be less than $4\;{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ when sintered at lower temperature than $250^{\circ}C$ to be able to apply to conductive patterns of FPCBs using ink-jet printing. Through this study, the parameters to control average diameter of CuNPs were found to be the introduction of additive agent, the feeding rate of reducing agent, and reaction temperature. The CuNPs with various average diameters (58, 40, 26, 20nm) could be synthesized by controlling these parameters. The dispersed solution of CuNPs with an average size of 20 nm was made with nonpolar solvent containing 3 wt% of binder, and then coated onto glass substrate. After sintering the coated substrates at $250^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes in nitrogen atmosphere, metallic copper film resulted in a specific resistivity of $4.2\;{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$.

  • Cu-free multi-component sol, of which final oxide composition becomes $Bi_{1.9}Pb{0.35}SrCaO,\;Bi_{1.8}Pb_{0.2}SrCaO\;and\;Bi_{1.5}SrCaO$, respectively, was prepared through sol-gel route and coated on a bare Cu substrate. Starting materials were metal-alkoxides as follows.; [$Bi(OC_{2}H_{5})_{3}\;Pb(O^{1}C_{3}H_{7})_{2},\;Sr(O^{i}C_{3}H_{7})_{2},\;Ca(OC_{2}H_{5})_{2}$] as a reagent grade. Transparent light yellowish sol was obtained in the case of $Bi_{1.9}Pb_{0.35}SrCaO\;and\;Bi_{1.8}Pb_{0.2}SrCaO$ composition and $Bi_{1.5}SrCaO$ composition's sol was light greenish. Each sol was repeatedly dip-coated on Cu substrate four times and pre-heated at $400^{\circ}C$ and finally heat-treated in the range of $740{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. In the results, crystalline phases confirmed by XRD were (2201) orthorhombic and monoclinic phases. However, only $Bi_{1.9}Pb_{0.35}SrCaO_{x}$ composition showed pseudo-superconductive behavior after heat-treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for 12 seconds and then onset temperature was 77 K, even though it did not exhibit zero resistance below Tc.

  • Graphene, hexagonal network of carbon atoms forming a one-atom thick planar sheet, has been emerged as a fascinating material for future nanoelectronics. Huge attention has been captured by its extraordinary electronic properties, such as bipolar conductance, half integer quantum Hall effect at room temperature, ballistic transport over ${\sim}0.4{\mu}m$ length and extremely high carrier mobility at room temperature. Several approaches have been developed to produce graphene, such as micromechanical cleavage of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite using adhesive tape, chemical reduction of exfoliated graphite oxide, epitaxial growth of graphene on SiC and single crystalline metal substrate, and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesis. In particular, direct synthesis of graphene using metal catalytic substrate in CVD process provides a new way to large-scale production of graphene film for realization of graphene-based electronics. In this method, metal catalytic substrates including Ni and Cu have been used for CVD synthesis of graphene. There are two proposed mechanism of graphene synthesis: carbon diffusion and precipitation for graphene synthesized on Ni, and surface adsorption for graphene synthesized on Cu, namely, self-limiting growth mechanism, which can be divided by difference of carbon solubility of the metals. Here we present that large area, uniform, and layer controllable graphene synthesized on Cu catalytic substrate is achieved by acetylene-assisted CVD. The number of graphene layer can be simply controlled by adjusting acetylene injection time, verified by Raman spectroscopy. Structural features and full details of mechanism for the growth of layer controllable graphene on Cu were systematically explored by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and secondary ion mass spectroscopy.

  • The metal-support interaction was studied in 1∼5wt% copper supported on $\gamma-alumina$ and titania systems by temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and EPR. When the samples were treated with oxygen at $500^{\circ}C$, the relative area of H2-TPR peak at higher temperature increased with copper content for titania system whereas that of lower temperature increased for ${\gamma}$-alumina system. After oxygen treatment at $500^{\circ}C,\;{\gamma}$-alumina system showed a TPR peak at $300^{\circ}C$ while two peaks at 120 and $180^{\circ}C$ were found in titania system. A typical $Cu^{2+}$ EPR signal was observed on ${\gamma}$-alumina but very broad and small one on titania. From the results, it was suggested that the metal-support interaction increases in the order of silica < titania < ${\gamma}$-alumina and copper oxide has different loading characteristics depending on the supports.

  • Cyclohexanone is important intermediate for the manufacture of caprolactam which is monomer of nylron. Cyclohexanone is generally produced by dehydrogenation reaction of cyclohexanol. In this study, highly mesoporous metal oxides such as meso-$WO_3$, meso-$TiO_2$, meso-$Fe_2O_3$, meso-CuO, meso-$SnO_2$ and meso-NiO were synthesized using mesoporous silica KIT-6 as a hard template via nano-replication method for dehydrogenation of cyclohexanol. The overall conversion of cyclohexanol followed a general order: meso-$WO_3$ >> meso-$Fe_2O_3$ > meso-$SnO_2$ > meso-$TiO_2$ > meso-NiO > meso-CuO. In particular, meso-$WO_3$ significantly showed higher activity than the other mesoporous metal oxides. Therefore, the meso-$WO_3$ has wide range of application possibilities for dehydrogenation of cyclohexanol.

  • In order to charaterize weathering of chalcopyrite and behavior of dissolved metal ions in waste rocks from Manjang Cu mine, mineralogical studies such as refractive microscope, XRD and SEM/EDS analyses carried out. The weathering was mainly occurred in fractures and edge of the chalcopyrite within the mine waste rocks. The weathering process can be seen to reflect four stages based on the weathering degree of chalcopyrite. The main secondary minerals are goethite, covellite, azurite, malachite and brochantite. Dissolved Cu and As were mainly adsorbed Fe-hydroxide. Poorly crystalline Fe-oxide contains relatively high As contents. In oxdizing condition, the weathering of chalcopyrite mainly occurs along the fracture, while the replacement of chalcopyrite observed mainly in the grain and produced covellite and brochantite. The dissolved metals (Cu, Fe, As) in waste rocks from the abandoned Manjang mine area could attenuate naturally by precipitation, adsorption and replacement reaction.

  • The low-temperature sintering behavior of AlN was investigated through a conventional method. $CaF_2$, CuO and Cu were selected as additives based on their low melting points. When sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 8 h in $N_2$ atmosphere, a sample density > 98% was obtained. The X-ray data indicated that eutectic reactions below $1200^{\circ}C$ were found. Therefore, the current systems have lower liquid formation temperatures than other systems. The liquid phase showed high dihedral angles at triple grain junctions, indicating that the liquid had poor wettability on the grain surfaces. Eventually, the liquid was likely to vaporize due to the unfavorable wetting condition. As a result, a microstructure with clean grain boundaries was obtained, resulting in higher contiguity between grains. From EDS analysis, oxygen impurity seems to be well removed in AlN lattice. Therefore, it is believed that the current systems are beneficial for reducing sintering temperature and improving oxygen removal.

  • The multi-layered OELDs(organic electroluminescent devices) were prepared on the patterened ITO (indium tin oxide)/glass substrates by the vacuum thermal evaporation method. The $Alq_3$ (tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum) low molecule compound was used as the light emission layer. TPD(triphenyl-diamine) and $\alpha-NPD$ were used as the hole transport layer. CuPc (Copper phthalocyanine) was also used as the hole injection layers. In addition, QD2 (quinacridone2) organic material with $10\AA$ thickness was deposited in the $Alq_3$ emission layer to improve the luminance efficiency. The threshold voltage was about 7V for all devices. The luminance and efficiency of devices was improved by substitution the $\alpha-NPD$ for TPD as the hole as the hole transport layer. The luminance efficiency of the OELD sample with QD2 thin film in the $Alq_3$ emission layer was found to be 1.55 lm/W, which is about 8 times larger value compared to the sample without QD2 thin layer.

  • In this study, we conducted a combined adsorption-sequential extraction analysis(CASA) to investigate temperature effects of single adsorption of lead, copper, zinc and cadmium on natural clays. As a result, it was found that in a single adsorption of lead and copper, about 50% of adsorption was occluded in carbonate phase, and in case of cadmium, about 80% of adsorption was occluded in exchangeable phase. At temperature below $25^{\circ}C$ about 60% of zinc was occluded in exchangeable phase but above $40^{\circ}C$ about 50% of zinc was occluded in carbonate phase. The effect of temperature on each occluded phase was largely observed in Fe-oxide, Mn-oxide and organic occluded phases. Besides, the adsorption of metals on natural clays was an endothermic reaction with the exception of exchangeable phase adsorption.

  • The metal oxide/graphene nanocomposites are promising functional materials for high capacitive electrode material of secondary batteries, and high sensitive material of high performance gas sensors. In this study, vanadium dioxide($VO_2$) nanostructrures were grown on CVD graphene which was synthesized on Cu foil by thermal CVD, and exfoliated graphene which was exfoliated from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite(HOPG) using a vapor transport method. As results, $VO_2$ nanostructures on CVD graphene were grown preferential growth on abundant functional groups of graphene grain boundaries. The functional groups are served to nucleation site of $VO_2$ nanostructures. On the other hand, 2D & 3D $VO_2$ nanostructures were grown on exfoliated graphene due to uniformly distributed functional groups on exfoliated graphene surface. The characteristics of morphology controlled growth of $VO_2$/graphene nanocomposites would be applied to fabrication process for high capacitive electrode materials of secondary batteries, and high sensitive materials of gas sensors.
