Novice Next-Generation Traffic Light System for Safe Pedestrian Crossing (보행자의 안전한 횡단을 위한 새로운 차세대 신호등 시스템)

  • The meaning of crosswalks and traffic lights in modern society has changed a lot as the enforcement of traffic signal violations has been strengthened. In this paper, we present a new next-generation traffic light method using radar and Can-bus communication methods suitable for the new traffic signal enforcement system. This method is a system that prevents accidents by transmitting information on the entry of a person and a car to a traffic light in a place where a person and a car passing through a mutually invisible traffic light cannot be seen. Since this system has only been developed for a month, it may be somewhat lacking in experimentation. However, in just one month, there have been no incidents except for a few people where the system has been installed.

Effectiveness Analysis for Traffic and Pedestrian Volumes of Pedestrian Pushbutton Signal (차량 및 보행자 교통량에 따른 보행자 작동신호기의 효과 분석)

  • Because usually signal controllers on the crosswalks of mid-block provide pedestrian signals every cycle based on the fixed signal plan, pedestrian signals are provided even when there is no pedestrian demand. Consequently, signal is operated inefficiently and this may cause drivels to experience useless delay or violate the signal. Even though recently pushbuttons have been installed to improve the efficiency of pedestrian signal control in the crosswalks of mid-block and the pedestrian safety. they are not spread out national-wide in Korea because of the cost of the pushbutton equipments and the lack of an acknowledgement of the efficiency of the pushbutton. In this study, the effectiveness of the pushbutton on saving the vehicle delay was verified through before and after study in 4 study sites using a traffic micro-simulation model, VISSIM. To evaluate the viability of the pushbutton, a benefit/cost analysis was also performed for 4 study sites. It was found that B/C ratio of all of 4 study sites was greater than 1. The sensitivity analysis for the traffic volume and pedestrian volume were performed to identify the impact of the both volume on the operation of pushbutton. And, a benefit/cost analysis was performed for all scenarios. It was found that when the pedestrian volume is greater than 90ped/h, the pedestrian signal was operated same as the fixed signal plan. That is, there is no benefit of pushbutton at all once the pedestrian volume is greater than 90ped/h. When the pedestrian volume is equal to or less than 90ped/h and the traffic volume is greater than 2,500veh/h, B/C ratio is greater than 1. Also it was found that as traffic volume increases and pedestrian volume decreases, the benefit increases. In this study, the criteria for installation of pushbutton on the crosswalks of mid-block are developed through the sensitivity analysis and benefit/cost analysis. The results of this study may be used as a criteria for expansion of pushbutton system.

An Investigation of Road Crossing Behaviour of Older Pedestrians at Unsignalized Crosswalk (무신호 단일로 횡단보도에서 고령 보행자의 횡단행태조사 및 분석)

  • In Korea, older pedestrian accounted for 57% of all pedestrian deaths although a ratio of older pedestrian accidents to total pedestrian accidents was only 25.9%. Though ageing population problem becomes more challenging for road safety, little is know about the behaviour of older pedestrian's behaviour. This study aimed to identify road crossing behaviour of older pedestrian at three-lane unsignalized crosswalks using video image analysis and to compare the behaviour of older pedestrian to younger one by indicators including approaching speed, the number of walking steps and other factors. The results showed that there was a difference of approaching time at kerb, waiting time at kerb, the number of glances at kerb, and the number of glances at crossing between two groups under the situation of car approaching to crosswalks. It also showed that older pedestrian usually spent 1.16 times more than younger pedestrian to walk across the crosswalk with only 84.4% of walking speed of younger pedestrian. The number of steps of older pedestrian for road crossing was 1.12 times higher with 90% shorter steps than younger pedestrian. It was concluded that older pedestrian usually decided to walk across in case of 1.67 times longer headway than younger pedestrian's decision. These results could be applied in road and facility design for better safety of older pedestrians.

Alternative to Improve the Lighting of Crosswalk on Rural Highways (지방지역 도로 횡단보도 조명 개선 방안)

  • While rural highways carry on lower traffic volumes, the deviations of running speeds between vehicles appear to be higher on rural highways than urban highways. The speed characteristic of rural highways is adding to pedestrian-related accidents which occur on a crosswalk with poor sight distance due to the limits of car headlights and lighting. Specially, the aged was mostly occupied in nighttime-related accidents on crosswalks, and pedestrians crossing on the far side of approaching vehicles appear to have the probability of fatality higher than the near side. An alternative is needed to resolve the compounded accidents, and then this study is to establish a new approach to an optimum lighting environment on a crosswalk to improve pedestrian safety. This study was conducted by a survey and a field study on the lighting of existing crosswalks. The field study shows that the existing lighting has the problem of wasting energy and impeding walking due to glare. The survey shows that nighttime sight distance on a crosswalk is required to improve and that road users prefer to be brighter pedestrian waiting space together with the crosswalk. Thus, a lighting environment that is not too bright and illuminates the crosswalk and the pedestrian waiting space is needed to implement.

User Interface for the 'Smombie Safe Go' App for Walking Safety (보행안전을 위한 앱서비스 'Smombie Safe Go' UI 연구)

  • The development in smartphone technology has brought convenience to the life of the mankind, but an excessive use of smartphones sometimes causes various accidents. This research tried to propose an application service 'Smombie Safe Go' UI(User Interface) that allows the prevention of such accident while using smartphones when walking. For this, after research and user observations, produced walker journey maps and derived necessary main functions needed for safety, and the result showed that transparent interface, obstacle location alert, warning of dangers functions were necessary. To make the contents of the service more detailed, hazardous situations faced during smartphone use when walking were classified into 3 situations : 1. Obstacle appearing in front, 2. traffic lights on crosswalks 3. No traffic lights on crosswalks. Scenarios by hazardous situation were written, and the flow and UI of the app service that warns its users in each situation of hazards were designed. it is predicted that 'Smombie Safe Go' may be possible to be utilized as an app service that provides a safe walking experience for not only regular pedestrians but also the blind population.

The Effect of Neighborhood Environmental Perception on Park Use for Health Improvement - The Case of Suseong-gu in Daegu City - (거주지 주변 환경에 대한 인식이 건강증진 목적의 공원이용에 미치는 영향 - 대구광역시 수성구를 대상으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of neighborhood environmental perception on park use for health. The study area is focused on neighborhood parks in Suseong-gu, Daegu city. The analysis results are based on questionnaires of 303 respondents. According to the results, park use for health improvement was significantly associated with the perceptions of accessibility to a marketplace, availability of public transit, accessibility to the park, enough sidewalks, number of crosswalks, and athletic population. The probability of park use increased by 2.326 times as the satisfaction of accessibility to the park increased. Also, greater athletic population, fewer crosswalks, and more sidewalks lead to increase of park use by 1.701, 1.617, and 1.642 times, respectively. Therefore, it is important to increase the available neighborhood parks around residences and to develop exercise programs that people can use continuously in order to vitalize park use for health improvement. Also, it is necessary to improve the convenience of walking such as development of pedestrian streets or malls between residences and parks.

Information Fusion of Cameras and Laser Radars for Perception Systems of Autonomous Vehicles (영상 및 레이저레이더 정보융합을 통한 자율주행자동차의 주행환경인식 및 추적방법)

  • A autonomous vehicle requires improved and robust perception systems than conventional perception systems of intelligent vehicles. In particular, single sensor based perception systems have been widely studied by using cameras and laser radar sensors which are the most representative sensors for perception by providing object information such as distance information and object features. The distance information of the laser radar sensor is used for road environment perception of road structures, vehicles, and pedestrians. The image information of the camera is used for visual recognition such as lanes, crosswalks, and traffic signs. However, single sensor based perception systems suffer from false positives and true negatives which are caused by sensor limitations and road environments. Accordingly, information fusion systems are essentially required to ensure the robustness and stability of perception systems in harsh environments. This paper describes a perception system for autonomous vehicles, which performs information fusion to recognize road environments. Particularly, vision and laser radar sensors are fused together to detect lanes, crosswalks, and obstacles. The proposed perception system was validated on various roads and environmental conditions with an autonomous vehicle.

Walking Accident Characteristics and Walking Factors for Road Crossing of the Transportation Vulnerable in the Case of Yeosu (교통약자의 보행 교통사고 특성과 보행 횡단요소 분석 (여수시를 사례로))

  • The population over 65 years old is 12.7% of total population in 2014 and Korea is going to be an aged society in the near future. The transportation vulnerable including the aged should be guaranteed in walking mobility under safe and comfortable environment for their socio-economic activities. For the era of fusion and convergence this paper investigated the characteristics of walking accidents related to the aged pedestrians and analyzed the aged-oriented walking factors with a reaction time and a walking speed at crosswalks in Yeosu. In the results, the crashes for the aged occur at 9.9% of total crashes and the fatalities of the aged are 40.3% of total fatalities in 2014. The 47.4% of the aged fatalities is also attributed to vehicle-to-pedestrian accidents. The 49.3% of all pedestrian fatalities occurs at the aged pedestrians with a very high proportion. The reaction time and walking speed for the aged were determined as the values located at the lower 15%-tile of the elderly physical ability. It is shown that the reaction time is 4.56 seconds and the walking speed is 0.76 m/s in the case of Yeosu. From two factors' standpoint, the walking environment at crosswalks in Yeosu is inappropriate for the aged.

Determination of Not-Permitted Entrance/Exit Section at Curb Areas (단지 내 진출입 불허구간의 적정길이 산정에 관한 연구)

  • At present, many problems in traffic operation and safety occurs since there is no clear design criteria on designating the not-permitted entrance/exit section at curb areas within complex areas. Even, there is no specific and detailed researches on the not-permitted entrance/exit section by now. This research calculated the proper length of the entrance/exit section at curb areas by dividing the access not-permitted section into the two sections. First, the calculation of the entrance section was done by considering the location of crosswalks, stop line clearance, the queue length of vehicles approaching to second lanes, and marginal distance for safety have been considered. Second, the calculation of the exit section was done by comparing and analyzing the distance between cars of the entrance section according to the investigation point and the distance considering the location of crosswalks, the behavior of exit vehicles and the length of vehicles. In conclusion, by presenting the proper length in consideration of the traffic operation and safety on the access not-permitted section within complex areas, it can be used as a traffic safety improvement alternative and will be contributed in establishing and operating the proper installation criteria for the access not-permitted section within complex areas.

Developing Traffic Accident Models Using Panel Data (Focused on the 50 intersections in Cheongju) (패널자료를 이용한 교통사고모형 개발 (청주시 교차로 50개 지점을 대상으로))

  • This study proposes the accident estimation model developed based on the time-series cross-sectional data at 50 intersections in Cheongju. The data were collected repeatedly and accumulated from 2004 to 2007. This study focused on deriving the optimal among the various models including TSCSREG(Time Series Cross Section Regression). Four different models utilizing various elements affecting accidents were developed. Through a statistical test, it was found that the t values of independent variables of the fixed effect models were less than those of the random effect models. Two variables were then found to be positive to the accidents: the number of crosswalks at an intersection and the number of intersections.
