  • With different working pressures and substrate biases, Cr-Al-N coatings were deposited by hybrid physical vapor deposition (PVD) method, consisting of unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering and arc ion plating (AIP) processes. Cr and Al targets were used for the arc ion plating and the sputtering process, respectively. Phase analysis, and composition, binding energy, and microstructural analyses were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), respectively. Surface droplet size of Cr-Al-N coatings was found to decrease with increasing substrate bias. A decrease of the deposition rate of Cr-Al-N films was expected due to the increase of substrate bias. The coatings were grown with textured CrN phase and (111), (200), and (220) planes. X-ray diffraction data show that all Cr-Al-N coatings shifted to lower diffraction angles due to the addition of Al. The XPS results were used to determine the $Cr_2N$, CrN, and (Cr,Al)N binding energies. The compositions of the Cr-Al-N films were measured by XPS to be Cr 23.2~36.9 at%, Al 30.1~40.3 at%, and N 31.3~38.6 at%.

  • The bi-layered films composed of Co-Cr-Ta layers and paramagnetic $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ underlayer were deposited by suing Facing Targets Sputtering(FTS). The effects of $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ underlayer on the crystallographic and magnetic characteristics of the Co-Cr-Ta layer deposited on the underlayer was investigated. The diffraction intensity $I_{p(002)}$ of Co-Cr-Ta layers on the $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ layer was stronger than that of single layer and Co-Cr-Ta/Ti double layer. Therefore, the crystallinity of Co-Cr-Ta layer was imporved by the $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ underlayer rather than Ti ones. However, te coercivity H$_{c\bot}$ of Co-Cr-Ta layers deposited on $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ underlayer was as low as 250 Oe even at substrate temperature of $220^{\circ}C$. This H$_{c\bot}$ decrease seems to be attributed to the effect of the $Co_{67}Cr_{33}$ underlayer as well as interval time between deposition of the underlayer and the Co-Cr-Ta layer.

  • Eutectic reactions of five kinds of Cr-coated Zr alloy cladding with different base materials (Zr-Nb-Sn alloy or Zr-Nb alloy), different coating thicknesses (6~22.5 mm), and different coating materials (Cr single layer or Cr/CrN bilayer) were studied using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The DSC experiments demonstrated that the onset temperatures of the Cr single layer coated specimens were almost identical to ~1308 ℃, regardless of base materials or coating thicknesses. This study demonstrated that the Cr/CrN bilayer coated Zr-Nb-Sn alloy has a slightly (~10 ℃) higher eutectic onset temperature compared to the single Cr-coated specimen. The eutectic region characterized by post-eutectic microstructure proportionally increases with coating thickness. The post-eutectic characterization with different holding times at high temperature (1310-1330 ℃) reveals that progression of Zr-Cr eutectic requires time, and it dramatically changed with exposure time and temperature. The practical value of the time gain in non-instantaneous eutectic formation in terms of safety margin, however, seems to be limited.

  • Purpose: Correct estimation of Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is very important for an accurate clinical assessment of the kidney function. This study compares four GFR markers, a serum creatinine-based estimation using MDRD formula, Cystatin-C, Cr-51 EDTA 2 samples and 6 samples. Materials and Methods: Serum creatinine concentrations, Cystatin-C serum concentrations and Cr-51 EDTA clearance are measured in 43 patients who received or donated kidney. Results: The correlation coefficient between serum based estimated GFR (MDRD) and Cr-51 EDTA 6 samples was 0.817 (p<0.01). The correlation coefficient between Cystatin-C based GFR and EDTA 6 samples was 0.7322 (p<0.01). Regression analysis showed a statistically significant correlation between Cr-51 EDTA 2 samples and 6 samples (r=0.971, p<0.01). Mean value and ${\pm}2SD$ for the difference between Cr-51 EDTA 2 samples and 6 samples were 4.7 mL/min and ${\pm}9.3$ respectively. Conclusions: The estimation of two samples Cr-51 EDTA showed that the method can be simplified by reducing blood samples without losing its high accuracy.

  • Thin films of the Au/Cr, Au/Ni/Cr and Au/Pd/Cr systems were deposited on alumina substrates at ambient temperature and $250^{\circ}C$ in a high-vacuum resistance heating evaporator and annealed at $300^{\circ}C$, $450^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in air, respectively. The film thicknesses of Au, Ni(or pd), and Cr were $1000{\AA}$, $300{\AA}$, and $50{\AA}$, respectively. The substrate temperature during deposition and the post-deposition annealing temperature affected the sheet resistance of thin-films due to the inter-diffusion of each layer. As a result of Auger depth profile analysis, in the Au/Cr system Cr already diffused out to Au surface during deposition at the substrate temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ and Au distribution changed after heat treatment. In the Au/Ni/Cr and Au/Pd/Cr systems, diffusion phenomena of Ni and Pd were found and especially Ni (approximately 45 at.%) diffused out to Au surface and oxidized.

  • We have fabricated Cr nanodot Schottky diodes utilizing AAO templates formed on n-Si substrates. Three different sizes of Cr nanodots (about 75.0, 57.6, and 35.8 nm) were obtained by controlling the height of the AAO template. Cr nanodot Schottky diodes showed a rectifying behavior with low SBHs of 0.17~0.20 eV and high ideality factors of 5.6~9.2 compared to those for the bulk diode. Also, Cr nanodot Schottky diodes with smaller diameters yield higher current densities than those with larger diameters. These electrical behaviors can be explained by both Schottky barrier height (SBH) lowering effects and enhanced tunneling current due to the nanoscale size of the Schottky contact. Also, we have fabricated Cr-Si nanorod Schottky diodes with three different lengths (130, 220, and 330 nm) by dry etching of n-Si substrate. Cr-Si nanorod Schottky diodes with longer nanorods yield higher reverse current than those with shorter nanorods due to the enhanced electric field, which is attributed to a high aspect ratio of Si nanorod.

  • Cobalt-Chromium (Co-Cr) alloys are classified as predominantly base-metal alloys and are widely known for their biomedical applications in the orthopedic and dental fields. In dentistry, Co-Cr alloys are commonly used for the fabrication of metallic frameworks of removable partial dentures and recently have been used as metallic substructures for the fabrication of porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations and implant frameworks. The increased worldwide interest in utilizing Co-Cr alloys for dental applications is related to their low cost and adequate physico-mechanical properties. Additionally, among base-metal alloys, Co-Cr alloys are used more frequently in many countries to replace Nickel-Chromium (Ni-Cr) alloys. This is mainly due to the increased concern regarding the toxic effects of Ni on the human body when alloys containing Ni are exposed to the oral cavity. This review article describes dental applications, metallurgical characterization, and physico-mechanical properties of Co-Cr alloys and also addresses their clinical and laboratory behavior in relation to those properties.

  • By using Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys, porcelain fused to metal (PFM) samples were prepared to examine the interface and the surface corrosion behavior. The potentiodynamic polarization analysis showed that the corrosion current density of Co-Cr alloy ($1.61{\times}10^{-6}A/cm^2$) was three times lower than that of Ni-Cr alloy ($4.83{\times}10^{-6}A/cm^2$) at room temperature. A dental prosthesis consisting of the porcelain fused to Ni-Cr alloy extracted from a patient after approximately four years of usage was examined to assess its resistance to corrosion. OM and SEM images of the metal part revealed a typical pitting corrosion. As compared to porcelain fused to Ni-Cr alloy having a thick layer (${\sim}10{\mu}m$) of oxide at the interface, a relatively thin oxide layer (less than $5{\mu}m$) was formed on Co-Cr alloy, indicating that the interface between Co-Cr alloy and porcelain may have a better adhesion strength than the interface between Ni-Cr alloy and porcelain.

  • Toxic effects of arsenic (As) and chromium (Cr) has been investigated using the sea urchin (Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus) germ cell and pluteus-larvae. The gametotoxic and embryotoxic effects of As and Cr on H. plucherrimus were each investigated at 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 100. Spawning was induced by 0.5 M KCl solution and the normal fertilization and embryogenesis rates were performed for 10 min and 64 hrs after fertilization, respectively. The normal fertilization and embryogenesis rates in the control condition (not including As and Cr) were greater than 94% and 93%, respectively. The fertilization rate was not significantly changed compared with control but embryogenesis rate was significantly decreased with concentration-dependent manner. As and Cr reduced normal embryogenesis rates and a significant reduction occurred at concentration greater than 6.25 ppb (P<0.01) and 25 ppb (P<0.05), respectively. The lowest-observedeffect- concentration (LOEC) of normal embryogenesis rate in As and Cr were each 6.25 and 25 ppb, respectively. From these results, normal embryogenesis rate of H. pulcherrimus have toxic effect at greater than the 6.25 ppb concentration of As and 25 ppb concentration of Cr in marine ecosystems. These results suggest that the normal embryogenesis rates of H. pulcherrimus are very useful test method for the toxicity assessment of heavy metal as As and Cr in marine ecosystems.

  • The effect of dietary pectin in the upper gastrointestinal transit rate was studied. Rats fed fiber-free diet or 10% pectin diet were offered 51-$CrCl_3,$ a transit marker. The movement of 51-Cr dose through the gastrointestinal tract was measured at intervals from 20 minutes to 6 hours after dosing. pectin significantly increased gastric emptying rate upto 3 hours after dosing. Pectin also increased small intestinal transit rate from 3 hours to 4 hours after dosing. The results suggest that delayed gastric emptying is not likely the important aspect of the mechanism by which pectin could flatten the post-prandial response of serum glucose and insulin.
