This paper proposes a method to calculate the stiffness and the damping coefficients of the coupled journal and thrust bearings. The Reynolds equations and their perturbation equations are transformed to the finite element equations by considering the continuity of pressure and flow at the interface between bearings. The Reynolds boundary condition is used in the numerical analysis to simulate the cavitation phenomena. The dynamic coefficients of the proposed method are compared with those of the numerical differentiation of the loads with respect to finite displacements and velocities of bearing center. It shows that the proposed method is more accurate and efficient than the differentiation method.

Tunnels are generally constructed below the ground water table, which produces a long-term interaction between the tunnel lining and the surrounding geo-materials. Thus, in conjunction with tunnel design, the presence of water may require a number of considerations such as: leakage and water load. It has been reported that deterioration of a drainage system of tunnels is one of the main factors governing the long-term hydraulic and structural lining-ground interaction. Therefore, the design procedure of an underwater tunnel should address any detrimental effects associated with this interaction. In this paper an attempt to identify the coupled structural and hydraulic interaction between the lining and the ground was made using a numerical method. A main concern was given to local hindrance of flow into tunnels. Six cases of local deterioration of a drainage system were considered to investigate the effects of deterioration on tunnels. It is revealed that hindrance of flow increased pore-water pressure on the deteriorated areas, and caused detrimental effects on the lining structures. The analysis results were compared with those from fully permeable and impermeable linings.

The reliable prediction of elastic vibrations of wetted complex structures, as ships, tanks, offshore structures, propulsion components etc. represent a theoretical and numerical demanding task due to fluid-structure interaction. The paper presented is addressed to the vibration analysis by a combined FE-BE-procedure based on the added mass concept utilizing a direct boundary integral formulation of the potential fluid problem in interior and exterior domains. The discretization is realized by boundary element collocation method using conventional as well as infinite boundary element formulation with analytical integration scheme. Particular attention is devoted to modelling of interior problems with both several separate or communicating fluid domains as well as thin-walled structures wetted on both sides. To deal with this specific kind of interaction problems so-called "virtual" boundary elements in areas of cut outs are placed to satisfy the kinematical conditions in partial connected fluid domains existing in realistic tank systems. Numerical results of various theoretical and practical examples demonstrate the performance of the BE-methodology presented.
In this paper, we address the numerical investigation on the effect of liquid compressibility onto the natural frequency of liquid-filled containers. Traditionally the liquid motion has been treated as an ideal fluid motion. However, from the numerical experiments for the axisymmetrical free-vibration of cylindrical liquid-storage tanks, we found that the relative difference in natural frequencies between ideal and compressible motions becomes remarkable, as the slenderness of tank or the relative liquid-fill height becomes larger. Therefore, in such cases of dynamic systems, the liquid compressibility becomes an important parameter, for the accurate vibration analysis. For the free-vibration analysis of compressible liquid-structure interaction we employed the coupled finite element formulation expressed in terms of the acoustic wave pressure and the structure deformation.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on the ground deformation in deep excavation with emphasis on the groundwater lowering. Using the stress-pore pressure coupled analysis Consideration to the effect of ground excavation and groundwater interaction were carried out and a series of two-dimensional finite element model was employed to perform a parametric study on a wide range of soil profile and initial ground water table condition.
The power flow analysis (PFA) has been performed to analyze the vibration of coupled plates excited by a point force in an arbitrary direction. The point force generates the out-of-plane vibration associated wish flexural waves and the in-plane vibration associated with longitudinal and shear waves. The energy governing equation for each type of waves was introduced and solved to Predict the vibrational energy density and intensity generated by the out-of-plane and in-plane components of the point force in an arbitrary direction. The wave transmission approach was used to consider the mode conversion at the joint of the coupled plates. Numerical results for vibrational energy density and intensity on the coupled plates were presented. Comparison of the results by PFA with exact results showed that PFA can be an effective tool to predict the spatial variation of the vibrational energy and intensity on the coupled plates at high frequencies.
In this paper, a general solution for the vibrational energy and intensity distribution through a compliant and dissipative joint between plate structures is derived on the basis of energy flow analysis (EFA). The joints are modeled by four sets of springs and dashpots to show their compliancy and dissipation in all four degrees of freedom. First, for the EFA, the power transmission and reflection coefficients for the joint on coupled plate structures connected at arbitrary angles were derived by the wave transmission approach. In numerical applications, EFA is performed using the derived coefficients for coupled plate structures under various joint properties, excitation frequencies, coupling angles, and internal loss factors. Numerical results of the vibrational energy distribution showed that the developed compliant and dissipative joint model successfully predicted the joint characteristics of practical structures vibrating in the medium-to-high frequency ranges. Moreover, the intensity distribution of a compliant and dissipative joint is described.
