  • This paper suggests a car-following algorithm for urban environment, with multiple target candidates. Until now, advanced driver assistant systems (ADASs) and self-driving technologies have been researched to cope with diverse possible scenarios. Among them, car-following driving has been formed the groundwork of autonomous vehicle for its integrity and flexibility to other modes such as smart cruise system (SCC) and platooning. Although the field has a rich history, most researches has been focused on the shape of target trajectory, such as the order of interpolated polynomial, in simple single-lane situation. However, to introduce the car-following mode in urban environment, realistic situation should be reflected: multi-lane road, target's unstable driving tendency, obstacles. Therefore, the suggested car-following system includes both in-lane preceding vehicle and other factors such as side-lane targets. The algorithm is comprised of three parts: path candidate generation and optimal trajectory selection. In the first part, initial guesses of desired paths are calculated as polynomial function connecting host vehicle's state and vicinal vehicle's predicted future states. In the second part, final target trajectory is selected using quadratic cost function reflecting safeness, control input efficiency, and initial objective such as velocity. Finally, adjusted path and control input are calculated using model predictive control (MPC). The suggested algorithm's performance is verified using off-line simulation using Matlab; the results shows reasonable car-following motion planning.

  • Overloaded vehicles increase the maintenance cost of road structures, and they are a major factor in causing damage to the roads and bridges. In addition, overloaded vehicles compromise the braking capability of the vehicle; thus, threatening the safety of the driver. In order to prevent overloading of vehicles, the government is cracking down on the roads by using a device that measures the weight of vehicles. But this process is inconvenient because the place where the equipment is installed is far away from where the cargo is loaded. Due to the limitations of these fixed weighing devices, there is a growing need for technology that can monitor vehicle weight distribution and overload conditions in real time. In this work, we develop an onboard scale that can measure the load (weight) of trucks in real time. The onboard scale consists of high sensors, a signal processing unit, and a display, and it measures the load using height-displacement of the vehicle's leaf spring suspension.

  • This paper proposes a parallel control method of a modular DC/DC converter for electric vehicle (EV) chargers. The EV chargers have been increasing the power capacity using modular converters. There are output current imbalances between the modules, which are caused by the difference of the impedance, delay of the gate driver, and error of the sensors. The conventional strategies for the equal distribution of the output current cause the voltage drop or the high volume and cost of the converters. Therefore, the proposed parallel control strategy effectively balances the output current of modules using a current compensation method. The proposed strategy is verified by simulations. Additional experimental results will be added under various conditions.

  • As the main driver of economic growth and employment, the agricultural sector plays an important role in Vietnam's economy. However, in recent years, the sector has faced new challenges and also presented new investment opportunities to stimulate agricultural growth. Many Vietnamese agricultural producers currently lack the modern technology and decision support tools needed to maintain and improve productivity in a rapidly changing environment. Other stakeholders in the agricultural value chain, such as input suppliers, distributors, and consumers, also face significant challenges, including disrupted value chains, transportation costs. The cost of transporting goods across the supply chain continues to increase and information exchange remains fragmented. A potential solution to address these challenges is the application of digital transformation in agricultural supply chains. Farmers and other value chain participants can improve the production of their goods and procedures by utilizing new and cutting-edge technologies that are integrated into a unified system as part of the digital transformation of agricultural supply chains. In this study, we evaluate the current status of digital transformation in the supply chain of the agriculture industry by finding and examining pertinent publications from key agencies as well as prior research. From there, in the framework of the digital economy, this study suggests a digital transformation roadmap for the agricultural supply chain.

  • Purpose: Online food delivery platforms face challenges to operational efficiency due to increasing demand, a shortage of drivers, and the constraint of a one-order-at-a-time delivery policy. It is imperative to find solutions to address the inefficiencies in the food delivery industry. Bundling multiple orders can help resolve these issues, but it requires complex computations due to the exponential increase in possible order combinations. Research design, data and methodology: This study proposes three bundle delivery systems-static, dynamic, and hybrid-utilizing a machine learning-based classification model to reduce the number of order combinations for efficient bundle computation. The proposed systems are analyzed through simulations using market data from South Korea's online food delivery platforms. Results: Our findings indicate that implementing bundle systems extends service coverage to more customers, increases average driver earnings, and maintains lead times comparable to standalone deliveries. Additionally, the platform experiences higher service completion rates and increased profitability. Conclusions: This suggests that bundle systems are cost-effective and beneficial for all stakeholders in online food delivery platforms, effectively addressing the inefficiencies in the industry.

  • Korean government has granted fixed indirect cost rates to several exceptional R&D programs which is lower than the predetermined rate by the government. It has been needed to evaluate the validity of exceptional R&D programs and determine the optimal indirect costs rate of the programs. This study analyzes the cost structure and explores drivers of indirect costs of exceptional R&D programs and evaluates the validity of current indirect costs rates. Finally, we propose the formulas for indirect costs rates of exceptional R&D programs. We analyze the cost structure of the exceptional R&D programs. Equipments and material costs are 50% in infra building program. Scholarship to students is 43% in HRD program. Equipments and material costs are 50% and R&D activity costs are 31% in international R&D program. Main cost components of evaluation program are salary(37%), R&D execution costs(21%) and R&D activity costs(19%). We propose three formulas of indirect costs for exceptional programs. 1) The cost items with exceptionally large amount are excluded in the base of formula for indirect costs. 2) Fixed indirect cost rate is applied for specific R&D programs. 3) Upper bound is set for the cost items with exceptionally large amount in the calculation of indirect costs rate. Our proposal is expected to contribute to the improvement of the efficiency of national R&D programs.

  • Purpose: Little is known regarding the extent to which dying patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) receive life-sustaining procedures and palliative care in U.S. hospitals. We examine hospital cost trends and the impact of palliative care utilization on the use of life-sustaining procedures in this population. Methods: Retrospective nationwide cohort analysis was performed using National Inpatient Sample (NIS) data from 2005 and 2014. We examined the receipt of both palliative care and intensive medical procedures, defined as systemic procedures, pulmonary procedures, or surgeries using the International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision (ICD-9-CM). Results: We used compound annual growth rates (CAGR) to determine temporal trends and multilevel multivariate regressions to identify factors associated with hospital cost. Among 77,394,755 hospitalizations, 79,314 patients were examined. The CAGR of hospital cost was 5.83% (P<0.001). The CAGRs of systemic procedures and palliative care were 5.98% and 19.89% respectively (each P<0.001). Systemic procedures, pulmonary procedures, and surgeries were associated with increased hospital cost by 59.04%, 72.00%, 55.26%, respectively (each P<0.001). Palliative care was associated with decreased hospital cost by 28.71% (P<0.001). Conclusion: The volume of systemic procedures is the biggest driver of cost increase although there is a cost-saving effect from greater palliative care utilization.

  • In this paper, we design and implement a public bicycle sharing system based on smart phone application capable of distributing access codes via internet connection. When smartphone user uses the application to request a bicycle unlock code, server receives the request and sends an encrypted code, which is used to unlock the bicycle at the station and the same code is used to return the bicycle. The station's hardware prototypes were built on top of Internet devices such as raspberry pi, arduino, keypad, and motor driver, and smartphone application basically includes shared bike rental and return functionality. It also includes an additional feature of reservation for a certain time period. We tested the implemented system, and found that it is efficient because it shows the average of 3-4 seconds delay. The system can be implemented to manage multiple bikes with a single control box, and as the user can use a smartphone application, this makes the system more cost effective.

  • We have analysed the impact of innovation on the employment in the Korean Service sector using KIS 2006 data. Our study is based on Bogliacino and Pianta (2010)'s model, which involves two main innovation strategies, technological competitiveness and cost competitiveness, as the main explanatory innovation variables for the employment dynamics. Empirical results show that an increase in demand was the strongest driver for an increase in employment in all four service sectors, including Science-based, specialized supplier, size and information intensive, and supplier dominated. Innovation strategy appeared to have a significant effect on employment at the firm level; Technological competitiveness showed a positive effect on employment in science based sector while cost competitiveness appeared to give a negative effect in specialized supplier sector. The firms in size and information intensive sector showed that increase in wages gives negative impact on their employment. However, cost competitiveness did not give any significant effect on employment dynamics of firms in size and information intensive sector and supplier dominated sector. This finding is different from the research of Bogliacino and Pianta (2010) on the European countries. One possible explanation would be that innovation strategy does not affect employment of firms in size and information intensive sector and supplier dominated sector since the level of innovativeness of these sectors in Korea fall behind that of European countries.
