  • Graphene was coated on austenitic and martensitic stainless steels to simulate the metallic bipolar plate of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized and was reduced to reduced graphene oxide (rGO) via a hydrazine process. rGO was confirmed by FE-SEM, Raman spectroscopy and XPS. Interfacial contact resistance (ICR) between the bipolar plate and the gas diffusion layer (GDL) was measured to confirm the electrical conductivity. Both ICR and corrosion current density decreased on graphene coated stainless steels. Corrosion resistance was also improved with immersion time in cathodic environments and satisfied the criteria of the Department of Energy (DOE), USA. The total concentrations of metal ions dissolved from graphene coated stainless steels were reduced. Furthermore hydrophobicity was improved by increasing the contact angle.

  • Ti and Ti-alloys have good biocompatibility, appropriate mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance. However, the widely used Ti-6Al-4V is found to release toxic ions (Al and V) into the body, leading to undesirable long-term effects. Ti-6Al-4V has much higher elastic modulus (100 GPa) than cortical bone (20 GPa). Therefore, titanium alloys with low elastic modulus have been developed as biomaterials to minimize stress shielding. The electrochemical behavior of surface-modified and MC3T3-E1 cell-cultured Ti-30(Nb,Ta) alloys with low elastic modulus have been investigated using various electrochemical methods. Surfaces of test samples were treated as follows: $0.3{\mu}m$ polished; $25{\mu}m$, $50{\mu}m$ and $125{\mu}m$ sandblasted. Specimen surfaces were cultured with MC3T3-E1 cells for 2 days. Average surface roughness ($R_a$) and morphology of specimens were determined using a surface profilometer, OM, and FE-SEM. Corrosion behavior was investigated using a potentiostat(EG&G PARSTAT 2273), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed (10 mHz to 100 kHz) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The microstructures of the Ti-30(Ta,Nb) alloys had a needle-like appearance. The $R_a$ of polished Ti-30Ta and Ti-30Nb alloys was lower than that of the sandblasted Ti alloy. Cultured cells displayed round shapes. For polished alloy samples, cells were well-cultured on all surfaces compared to sandblasted alloy samples. In sandblasted and cell-cultured Ti-30(Nb,Ta) alloy, the pitting potential decreased and passive current density increased as $R_a$ increased. Anodic polarization curves of cell-cultured Ti alloys showed unstable behavior in the passive region compared to non-cell-cultured alloys. From impedance tests of sandblasted and cell-cultured alloys, the polarization resistance decreased as $R_a$ increased, whereas, $R_a$ for cell-cultured Ti alloys increased compared to non-cell-cultured Ti alloys.

  • Linear polarization resistance (LPR) testing of soils has been used extensively by a number of water utilities across Australia for many years now to determine the condition of buried ferrous water mains. The LPR test itself is a relatively simple, inexpensive test that serves as a substitute for actual exhumation and physical inspection of buried water mains to determine corrosion losses. LPR testing results (and the corresponding pit depth estimates) in combination with proprietary pipe failure algorithms can provideauseful predictive tool in determiningthe current and future conditions of an asset. Anumber of LPR tests have been developed on soil by various researchers over the years1), but few have gained widespread commercial use, partly due to the difficulty in replicating the results. This author developed an electrochemical cell that was suitable for LPR soil testing and utilized this cell to test a series of soil samples obtained through an extensive program of field exhumations. The objective of this testing was to examine the relationship between short-term electrochemical testing and long-term in-situ corrosion of buried water mains, utilizing an LPR test that could be robustly replicated. Forty-one soil samples and related corrosion data were obtained from ad hoc condition assessments of buried water mains located throughout the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. Each sample was subjected to the electrochemical test developed by the author, and the resulting polarization data were compared with long-term pitting data obtained from each water main. The results of this testing program enabled the author to undertake a comprehensive review of the LPR technique as it is applied to soils and to examine whether correlations can be made between LPR testing results and long-term field corrosion.

  • A series of in-situ inspection and measurements have been conducted to estimate rebar corrosion incidence of concrete bridges in Seoul metropolitan area. The objectives of this study were to obtain the fundamental data to analysis the causes of rebar corrosion and to establish the repair strategies of deteriorated concrete bridges due to corrosion. The results of this study had been analysed to identify the extent of chloride content and incidence of rebar corrosion by construction ages and by members. After measuring chloride content in concrete, it was concluded that about 76% of all tests on samples from concrete exceed the maximum acceptable limit to risk of chloride-induced corrosion. On the whole, slabs had the most highly chloride content. About 16% of the concrete bridges had a value lower than -350mV (vs. CSE), so it could concluded that the excessive chloride content and carbonation were a major causes of rebar corrosion. Concrete member which carbonation depth penetrates toward rebar was 39% among all tests on samples. The major causes of rebar corrosion were highly chloride content 50%, concrete carbonation 38%, poorly visual condition 6% and etc, 6%.

  • To estimate the reliability of 12Cr alloy steel, the material of turbine blade in the steam power plant, Its corrosion susceptibility and fatigue characteristics in NaCl and Na$_2$SO$_4$solution with the difference of concentration and temperature was investigated. The polarization tests recommended in ASTM G5 standard for corrosion susceptibility in the various corrosive solutions was estimated. It showed that the higher temperature, the faster corrosion rates and corrosion rates were the fastest in 3.5 wt.% NaCl and 1M Na$_2$SO$_4$solution. From these results, the degradation conditions were determined in distilled water, 3.5 wt.% NaCl and 1M Na$_2$SO$_4$solution at room temperature, 60$\^{C}$ and 90$\^{C}$ during 3, 6 and 9 months. Its surface had a few pits for long duration. But, it was not susceptible in sulfide and chloride condition of several temperatures. If the degraded 12Cr alloy steel and non-degraded one were compared with fatigue characteristics, Any differences were not found regardless of temperature and degradation period.

  • Irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) is one of the main degradation mechanisms of austenitic stainless steels, which are used as reactor internal materials. Slow strain rate testing (SSRT) has been widely applied to evaluate the IASCC initiation characteristics of proton-irradiated tensile specimens. Tensile specimens require low surface roughness for micro-crack observation, and electropolishing is the most important specimen pre-treatment process used for this. In this study, optimal electropolishing conditions were examined through analyzing results of polarization experiments and surface roughness measurements after electropolishing. Corrosion cell and electropolishing equipment were fabricated for polarization tests and electropolishing experiments using SSRT specimens. The experimental parameters were electropolishing time, current density, electrolyte temperature, and stirring speed. The optimal electropolishing conditions for SSRT tensile specimens made of type 316 stainless steel were evaluated as a polishing time of 180 seconds, a current density of 0.15 A/cm2, an electrolyte temperature of 60 ℃, and a stirring speed of 200 RPM.

  • The molten carbonate fuel cell has conspicuous features and high potential in being used as an energy converter of various fuels to electricity and heat. However, the MCFC which use strongly corrosive molten carbonate at 650[.deg. C] have many problem. Systematic investigation on corrosion behavior of Fe-based Cr has been done in ($62{\times}38$)mol % (Li+K)$CO_3$ melt at 923K by using steady state polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method. It was found that the corrosion current of these Fe-based alloys decreased with increasing Cr content, and this was attributed to the formation of $LiCrO_2$ layer at the surface .

  • Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures in marine environment is one of the most important mechanisms of deterioration. Under Korean highway bridge, the time for the steel reinforcement in the concrete to exhibit initial signs of corrosion is within three decades. Therefore, 'SUM JIN' highway bridge, located in a corrosive marine environment on the south of Korea, had been examined the current condition of the steel reinforcement corrosion in concrete by half-cell potentials, chloride contamination of concrete and so on. According to the tests, the protecting film around the reinforcement is deteriorated and corrosion activity developed in tidal zone. The purpose of this paper is to report the effects of 'SUM JIN' highway bridge damaged by chlodide attack and to present the results of repair of 'SUM JIN' highway concrete bridge in domestic marine environment.

  • The cavity formed by the ultrasonic generation in the fluid with the application of water cavitation peening collides into the metal surface. At this time, the surface modification effect such as the work hardening presents by the compressive residual stress formed due to the localized plastic deformation. In this investigation, the water cavitation peening technology in the distilled water with the lapse of time was applied to 5052-O aluminum alloy for aluminum ship of a high value. So, the optimum water cavitation peening time on the effect for surface hardening and anti-corrosion property was investigated. Consequently, the water cavitatin peening time on excellent hardness and corrosion resistance characteristic presented 3.5 min. and 5.0 min, respectively. The surface hardness in the optimum water cavitation peening time was improved approximately 45% compared to the non-WCPed condition. In addition, corrosion current density was decreased.
