  • Improved procedures were implemented in the production of the lithospheric magnetic anomaly map from Magsat satellite magnetometer data of East Asia between $90^{\circ}E-150^{\circ}E$ and $10^{\circ}S-50^{\circ}N$. Procedures included more effective selection of the do·it and dawn tracks, ring current correction, and separation of core field and external field effects. External field reductions included an ionospheric correction and pass-by-pass correlation analysis. Track-line noise effects were reduced by spectral reconstruction of the dusk and dawn data sets. The total field magnetic anomalies were differentially-reduced-to-the-pole to minimize distortion s between satellite magnetic anomalies and their geological sources caused by corefield variations over the study area. Aeromagnetic anomalies were correlated with Magsat magnetic anomalies at the satellite altitude to test the lithospheric veracity of anomalies in these two data sets. The aeromagnetic anomalies were low-pass filtered to eliminate high frequency components that may not be shown at the satellite altitude. Although the two maps have a low CC of 0.243, there are many features that are directly correlated (peak-to-peak and trough-to-trough). The low CC between the two maps was generated by the combination of directly- and inversely-correlative anomaly features between them. It is very difficult to discriminate directly, inversely, and nully correlative features in these two anomaly maps because features are complicatedly correlated due to the depth and superposition of the anomaly sources. In general, the lithospheric magnetic components were recovered successfully from satellite magnetometer observations and correlated well with aeromagnetic anomalies in the study area.

  • Objectives: The study evaluated correlations among monthly PM2.5, PM10, Cd, Pb concentrations and the number of Asian dust days. Methods: Based on data from 'The annual report on air quality in Korea from 1999 to 2017', concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, Cd, Pb, and the number of Asian dust days were recalculated to mean, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum. Correlation coefficients were calculated among PM2.5, PM10, Cd, Pb, and Asian dust days. Results: Asian dust days were correlated only with PM10 among the four factors of PM10, PM2.5, Cd, and Pb. The four factors of PM10, PM2.5, Cd, and Pb were very significantly correlated with each other (p<0.01). Their correlation coefficients for PM10 were 0.800 for PM2.5, 0.823 for Cd, and 0.892 for Pb. PM2.5 was also correlated strongly with Cd (0.845) and Pb (0.830). Cd had a correlation with Pb of 0.971. The maximums of PM2.5, PM10, and Pb were shown to exceed the atmospheric environmental standard of Korea, which necessitates national continuous exposure control. Based on exposure data, Asian dust days were thought to be an exposure factor for Cd and Pb. Conclusion: Asian dust might be a factor in Cd and Pb exposure. National exposure controls are required for exposure to PM2.5, PM10, Cd, and Pb.

  • Objective : We present the difference of histopathologic changes of the internal elastic lamina (IEL) and collagen III in the superficial temporal artery (STA) between aneurysmal patients and non-aneurysmal patients. Also, the pathologic data with clinical features by comparative methods to validate the risk factor of the intracranial aneurysm are presented. Methods : Samples of the STA were harvested form 38 patients including aneurysmal and non-aneurysmal patients undergoing craniotomy. Paraffin-embedded sections were examined, using hematoxylin and eosin, van Giebson and mouse anti-collagen III staining techniques. Histopathological observations were ana lysed and correlated with clinical features such as presence of aneurysm, hypertension, age, and sex. Results : Twenty-seven patients had the intracranial aneurysm. Of these 24 patients were 50 years old or older. Nineteen patients had a history of hypertension. Twenty patients were female. Histopathological study demostrated the derangement of IEL and the deficiency of type III collagen were prominent in aneurysmal patients (p < 0.05). Fifty years old or older patients did not show correlation with the deficiency of type III collagen, but with the derangement of IEL (p < 0.05). The female sex was not correlated with the derangement of IEL but with the deficiency of type III collagen (p < 0.05). However, Hypertension was not correlated with these pathologic data. Conclusion : Patients with intracranial aneurysms have severe histopathologic changes of the arterial wall showing the derangement of IEL and the deficiency of type III collagen. In the clinico-pathologic study, the advanced age and female sex were considered as risk factors of the intracranial aneurysm.

  • Background: Variation in cancer incidence in geographical locations is due to different lifestyles and risk factors. Diet and socio-economic position (SEP) have been identified as important for the etiology of cancer but patterns are changing and inconsistent. The aim of this study was to investigate correlations of the incidence of common cancers with food groups, total energy, smoking, and SEP. Materials and Methods: In an ecological study, disaggregated cancer data through the National Cancer Registry in Iran (2008) and dietary intake, smoking habits and SEP obtained through a population based survey within the Urban Health Equity Assessment (Urban-HEART) project were correlated across 22 districts of Tehran. Results: Consumption of fruit, meat and dairy products adjusted for energy were positively correlated with bladder, colorectal, prostate and breast and total cancers in men and women, while these cancers were adversely correlated with bread and fat intake. Also prostate, breast, colorectal, bladder and ovarian cancers had a positive correlation with SEP; there was no correlation between SEP and skin cancer in both genders and stomach cancer in men. Conclusions: The incidence of cancer was higher in some regions of Tehran which appeared to be mainly determined by SEP rather than dietary intake. Further individual data are required to investigate reasons of cancer clustering.

  • The study of pores, small penumbraless sunspots, can give us a chance to understand how strong magnetic fields interact with convective motions in the photosphere. For a better understanding of this interaction, we investigate the temporal variation of several tiny pores smaller than 2". These pores were observed by the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) onboard Hinode on 2006 December 29. We have analyzed the high resolution spectropolarimetric (SP) data and the G-band filtergrams taken during the observation. Magnetic flux density and Doppler velocities of the pores are estimated by applying the center of gravity (COG) method to the SP data. The horizontal motions in and around the pores are tracked by adopting the Nonlinear Affine Velocity Estimator (NAVE) method to the G-band filter images. As results, we found the followings. (1) Darkness of pores is positively correlated with magnetic flux density. (2) Downflows always exist inside and around the pores. (3) The speed of downflows inside the pores is negatively correlated with their darkness. (4) The pores are surrounded by strong downflows. (5) Brightness changes of the pores are correlated with the divergence of mass flow (correlation coefficient > 0.9). (6) The pores in the growing phase are associated with the converging flow pattern and the pores in the decay phase with the diverging flow pattern. Our results support the idea that a pore grows as magnetic flux density increases due to the convergence of ambient mass flow and it decays with the decrease of the flux density due to the diverging mass flow.
