  • Fault breccia, produced by fracturing and comminution of host rock during fault activity, is a common component within fault cores. Fault breccia may display a preferred orientationin accordance with the sense of motion on the fault. Here we use a numerical analysis technique to study the effects of the distribution and content of breccia in fault core on the elastic moduli. The analytical models are grouped into those in which breccias display a preferred orientation within fault core and those in which breccias are randomly oriented. The breccia compositions considered here are granite and shale, and the breccia contents are 10 wt%, 20 wt%, and 30 wt%. Our results show that for all the cases considered, differences in the deformation moduli fall within the range 0.1%~1.1% and differences in the elastic moduli fall within the range 0.02~0.4 MPa. Thus, the distribution and content of fault breccia have almost no effect on the elastic moduli.

  • Although geophysical methods are useful and generally provide valuable information about the subsurface, it is important to recognize their limitations. A common limitation is the lack of sufficient contrast in physical properties between different layers. Thus, multiple methods are commonly used to best constrain the physical properties of different layers and interpret each section individually. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and shallow seismic reflection (SSR) methods, used for shallow and very shallow subsurface imaging, respond to dielectric and velocity contrasts between layers, respectively. In this study, we merged GPR and SSR data from a test site within the Cheongui granitic mass, where the water table is ~3 m deep all year. We interpreted the data in combination with field observations and existing data from drill cores and well logs. GPR and SSR reflections from the tops of the sand layer, water table, and weathered and soft rocks are successfully mapped in a single section, and they correlate well with electrical resistivity data and SPS (suspension PS) well-logging profiles. In addition, subsurface interfaces in the integrated section correlate well with S-wave velocity structures from multi-channel analysis shear wave (MASW) data, a method that was recently developed to enhance lateral resolution on the basis of CMP (common midpoint) cross-correlation (CMPCC) analysis.

  • To study biogeochemical characteristics and origin organic matter, sediment samples were taken from Site of 1249C and Stie 1251B of ODP Leg 204. Data of Rock-Eval, isotope, and element analysis generally indicate dominance of marine organic matter in sediments deposited under marine sedimentary environment. Only Rock-Eval data are somewhat different from those of others owing to under-maturation of organic matter. Samples of Site 1249C show high content of gas hydrate, whereas Site 1251B low content of gas hydrate in some intervals of the core. This result may be accounted to different location of two cores and presence of transportation passage (Horizon A, BSR 2) of thermogenic gas in the core, 1249 C. However, Site 1251B Located in the basin of low accumulation of gas hydrate is presumed to be limited in the gas hydrate production. Because not only transportation passage is limited to move thermogenic gas from the core, but also gas supply was not enough. Therefore, the biogenic gas that resulted from diagenesis of there sediment is superior.

  • As greater numbers of fill dams and reservoirs become old, the risks of damage or embankment collapse increases. However, few studies have considered the deterioration and hazard classification of the internal core layers of fill dams. This study reports the results of geotechnical investigations of 13 earth-cored fill dams in Korea, based on no-water borehole drilling, Standard Penetration Test, and 2D and 3D electrical resistivity surveys along with in situ and laboratory testing. High-capacity no-water boring minimized core layer disturbance while providing continuous core sample recovery. The results allow the classification of potential hazards related to the existing core layers based on both visual inspection of the recovered samples and the results of engineering surveys and tests. Four types of potential hazard are classified: locally fluidized core with a high water content, rapid water inflow to a borehole, cores with granular materials, and relatively low stiffness of core. Among these, the locally fluidized core is the most critical hazard that requires remedial action because it is related to the potential internal flow path and internal erosion. The other three hazard types are of medium importance and require careful monitoring and regular inspection. Of note, there was no correlation between age and core deterioration. The results are expected to aid the safe management and potential upgrading of aging cored fill dams.

  • Behaviour of a fungicide $^{14}C-propiconazole$ was investigated in a rice plant grown-lysimeter soil. The lysimeter was composed of soil cores of silty clay. $Propiconazole(Tilt\;250^R\;EC)$ plus $^{14}C-labeled$ propiconazole was applied on the surface of lysimeter soil at a rate of 0.12kg/10a after rice transplanting. The application was done consecutively for two years. The behaviours of propiconazole in the lysimeter soil were investigated by measuring the amounts of $^{14}C-leachate$, $^{14}CO_2$, the residues distributed in each soil segment and taken up by rice plants. The relative amounts of $^{14}C$ leached from the lysimeter were the background level of the applied $^{14}C$ throughout expeiment. The amounts of $^{14}CO_2$ evolved from the lysimeter were 5.7 and 7.8% of the original $^{14}C$ in the 1st and 2nd treatment, respectively. The amounts of volatile substances soil were the background level throughout experiment, which indicated that propiconazole was stable chemically in the experimental condition. The $^{14}C-activities$ absorbed and translocated into rice plants were 3.7 and 7.6% in 1st and 2nd treatment, respectively. The $^{14}C-activities$ in the soil layer of the lysimeter was distributed mainly in the depth of 0 to 20cm, which suggested propiconazole did not have the risk of groundwater contamination.

  • In the Ordered Core Based Tree(OCBT) protocol, a core location is the most important feature to affect the performance. In this paper, the location placement of multiple level cores is studied. The proposed algorithm isthat each node in the network evaluates a sum of shortest path costs from all the other nodes and the entirenetwork is divided into a hierarchy region to have 3-logical level(Small, Medium, Large). The node to have thelowest cost in each S-Region is decided to be a core node. Then, the core nodes in the each S-Region evaluatea sum of shortest path costs from all the other core nodes in the same M-Region. The core node to have thelowest cost is decided to be the upper level core node. Similarly the highest level core node is decided in theL-Region. The proposed algoritthm is compared with conventional two methods to put the core nodes in thenetwork One is the random method to put the core nodes randomly. The other is the center method to locatethe core node at the nearest node from the center of each S-Region and then to locate the highest level corenode at the nearest core node from the center of the entire network. Extensive simulations are performed in theview of mean tree cost and join latency. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has betterperformance than random method or center method.

  • In this study, we perform a simulation study to compare frequently used standardization methods for interview scores based on trimmed mean, rank mean, and z-score mean. In this simulation study we assume that interviewer's score is influenced by a weighted average of true interviewee's true score and independent noise whose weight is determined by the professionality of the interviewer. In other words, as interviewer's professionality increases, the observed score becomes closer to the true score and if interviewer's professionality decreases, the observed score becomes closer to the noise instead of the true score. By adding interviewer's tendency bias to the weighed average, final interviewee's score is assumed to be observed. In this simulation, the interviewers's cores for each method are computed and then the method is considered best whose rank correlation between the method's scores and the true scores is highest. Simulation results show that when the true score is from normal distributions, z-score mean is best in general and when the true score is from Laplace distributions, z-score mean is better than rank mean in full interview system, where all interviewers meet all interviewees, and rank mean is better than z-score mean in half split interview system, where the interviewers meet only half of the interviewees. Trimmed mean is worst in general.

  • Precambrian gneiss complex in the Pyeongchang-Wonju area, which lies west of the Paleozoic sedimentary basin of the Yeongwol-Taebaek area, is being considered as a part of the Gyeonggi massif, but its ages of formation and metamorphic events are not well defined yet. In this study, SHRIMP zircon U-Pb ages were determined from the gneiss complex in the area, We obtained the discrete ages of magmatic (ca. 1960 Ma) and metamorphic (ca. 1860 Ma) events through the interpretation of the SHRIMP data based on the internal structures of zircons. These are almost the same to the ages of main intrusion and metamorphism reported from the Precambrian basements of Gyeonggi, Yeongnam and Nangnim massifs of the Korean Peninsula, Ages of 3200~3300 Ma, 2900 Ma, 2660 Ma, 2430 Ma, 2260 Ma, and 2080~2070 Ma obtained from inherited cores of studied zircons are also very similar to the frequently reported ages from the basement rocks of the Gyeonggi and Yeongnam massifs, Lower intercept age of about 270 Ma calculated from the rim data seems to indicate that the study area suffered from a late Paleozoic metamorphism (Okcheon Orogeny), but we need more reasonable and sufficient data to confirm it. According to the results of this study, it is suggested that the Bangnim group unconformably overlying the gneiss complex was deposited after the Paleoproterozoic granitic magmatism (ca. 1960 Ma) and metamorphism (ca. 1860 Ma).

  • This paper presents a micro fluxgate magnetic sensor in printed circuit board (PCB). In order to observe the effect of the closed magnetic path, the magnetic cores of rectangular-ring and two bars were each fabricated. Each fluxgate sensor consists of five PCB stack layers including one layer magnetic core and four layers of excitation and pick-up coils. The center layer as a magnetic core is made of a Co-based amorphous magnetic ribbon with extremely high DC permeability of ~100,000. Four outer layers as an excitation and pick-up coils have a planar solenoid and are made of copper foil. In case of the fluxgate sensor having the rectangular-ring shaped core, excellent linear response over the range of -100 $\mu$T to + 100 $\mu$T is obtained with 540 V/Tsensitivity at excitation square wave of 3 $V_{p-p}$ and 360 KHz. The chip size of the fabricated sensing element is $7.3 \times 5.7\textrm{mm}^2$. The very low power consumption of ~8 mW was measured. This magnetic sensor is very useful for various applications such as: portable navigation systems, telematics, VR game and so on.n.
