  • The purpose of present study tested the effects of context, transparency, familiarity and related variables on comprehension of 32 idioms in 87 Chinese learners of Korean who were attending the S university in Jeonnam providence. In the first assessment, idiomatic phrases were presented out of context. In another assessment, idiomatic phrases were embedded in supportive story contexts. To examine the difference based on task types, paired t-test or one-way ANOVA was used to test differences on related variables such as TOPIK, years of residence in Korea, major and etc. on idiom comprehension. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, task type, familiarity and transparency were found to have no significant effect on idiom comprehension for Chinese learners of Korean. Second, the related variables such as TOPIK, and major had a significant effect on idiom comprehension. Third, percentage of context related interpretation error in context task was the highest. Literal interpretation errors were followed by it. It means they have a tendency to use contextual cues and semantic analysis of the phrase to comprehend Korean idioms. The results of study will be used to make a plan for teaching Chinese learners of Korean.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how the long-term care effects the elderly that adapt themselves to the caring facility, what their experiences are and what kinds of behavioral characteristics they present. We have analyzed the research conducted on 15 elderly individuals who are living in an elderly long-term care facility, by using the grounded theory approach of Strauss and Corbin (1998). As a result, 170 concepts, 42 sub-categories, and 15 categories were set by the open coding process. During the adaptation process in a long-term care facility, the primary experience or feeling by the elderly is that they had been 'deserted'. However, when consolidating the casual conditions, contextual conditions, intervening conditions, the action/interaction strategy, and consequence, the primary experience was that the elderly came to an 'acceptance'. Such acceptance was then sub-categorized into a destiny-resignation type, reality-acceptance type, and voluntary-selection type. Based on the results of this study, we recommend practical alternatives which will improve surrounding circumstances including caring facilities, its employees, relationships with other elderly individuals, and family support.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dark side personality traits on self-other rating agreement in leader effectiveness. Data were collected from 80 team leaders and their peers in college. Peers who conducted a team project were asked to assess performance of their team leaders on leader effectiveness, task performance, and contextual performance. The leaders were also asked to self-rate their performance on the same measures. Results indicated that there was disagreement of perceptions about personality traits between leader's self-ratings and the rating of others. First, leaders considered their own Bold, Diligent behaviors as positive influence on their leadership-related criteria, whereas peers of these leaders provided negative ratings. Also, leaders viewed Leisurely and Cautious characteristics as unrelated or negative to performance, whereas peers perceiveed these personality traits as positive to performance. Suggestions for future research were provided based on the findings.

  • Cognitive decline in aging is known to yield detrimental effects in syntactic processing and working memory capacity is the most crucial cognitive function in understanding older adults' sentence processing skills. This study examined how young and older adults utilize contextual information while resolving NP-attached Ps vis word-by-word self-paced reading paradigm. In addition, the study asked which cognitive functions play roles on the use of a NP-supporting context during processing of NP-attached PP. When NP-attached PP was presented in a supporting context, both age groups performed faster than in the null context condition. Among different cognitive functions, alternating attention skills were correlated with the ability utilizing context during syntactic ambiguity resolution and working memory capacity was not found to be crucial for this study. In conclusion, this study suggests that aging does not always affect older adults' syntactic processing negatively and relevant cognitive function may vary depending on the type of syntactic structure.

  • This study examines the effects of transformational leadership on helping behavior for the secretary workers. We also demonstrate comprehensively the moderating effects of job resources(LMX) and job demands(utilization of mobile devices after work) on the relationship between transformational leadership and helping behavior. The results of this study targeted 140 incumbent secretaries are as follows: First, transformational leadership has a significant positive effect on the helping behaviors of members. Second, the interaction effect of LMX(synergistic effect) was verified in the positive relationship between transformational leadership and helping behavior. Finally, interaction effects of utilization of mobile devices after work(buffering effect) were confirmed in the relationship between transformational leadership and helping behavior. The results of this study are that transformational leadership of middle managers is important to strengthen worker's helping behavior, but it is also important to understand the contextual factors such as social support(LMX) and work environment(utilization of mobile devices after work) that affect the will and autonomy of members in accepting leadership. Finally, we suggest the theoretical and practical implications of this study, present limitations and future research directions.

  • The effects of mentoring education bring positive effects such as mentees' capacity building, knowledge improvement and positive attitude. The major difficulties that nursing college students experience in clinical practice are low adaptability, lack of confidence, etc. Therefore, this study developed mentoring education program to improve the problem-solving ability, learning attitude, and confidence in nursing skill before clinical practice for nursing college students and evaluated their effectiveness. In order to develop the program, a group of experts consisting of professors and clinical nurses selected 11 topics after discussing nursing skills and knowledge, which were most required in clinical practice. The program involved 14 mentors who operated practice, counseling, video clips, and contextual discussions for two days to a group of 9 to 10 people. Nursing college students who received the mentoring education program showed a significant increase in learning attitude and confidence in performance of nursing skills, but there was no statistically significant difference in problem-solving ability. This study is meaningful in that it has improved the educational effect by using mentoring methods, away from formal in-school practice education. In the future, it will be necessary to evaluate whether the mentoring education program affect the problem-solving ability of nursing students by applying it before, during, and after clinical practice rather than in a short period.
