  • The building needs of the community are met by the interrelated construction activities of maintaining, modernizing and replacing the existing stock of building and by the erection of additional new building. Studying the service lift of buildings and how it is determined can serve as an important measuring stick in making decisions on construction policy. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide useful information for future construction through a comparative and analytical study of building structures on disappeared buildings. It was found that most building structure had a shorter service life than the standard set by The Korea Appraisal Board. This situation may have occurred due to the sharp rise in replacement of older buildings with new buildings for the purpose of monetary profit. To increase the economic life of buildings reduce losses of the nation's capital henceforth, examination on policy md steady study needs to be done.

  • This study was to solve the lift problem of the existing unit curtain wall type by using the vertical material mullion as a rail in curtain wall, which is recently used as an external finishing material for high-rise buildings. It has been shown that the application of the curtain wall mullion's rail can be quantified even at 20m/sec wind speed through the Mock-Up test. Based on the sites selected for comparison of construction methods, it was analyzed that the construction period could be shortened by 48 days, or about 20 percent. It was analyzed that the number of construction workers could be reduced by about 33 percent from the previous nine to six. Based on these results, assuming the installation of curtain wall units of 10,000㎡, it is judged that construction cost can be reduced by 80% or more.

  • When a cable-stayed bridge is under construction, the cable tension that changes according to the construction phase is the index indicating the proper construction management. In this study, the vibration method using the least-square estimation has been implemented to monitor changing tensions of two multi-strand cables of a cable-stayed bridge under construction. The test bridge is Hwamyung Bridge in Korea with a prestressed concrete box girder. The field tests are executed during the second tensioning stage just after the installation of the key segment. The tensions of two cables are measured before and after the tensioning and 5 days later (i.e., after finishing the tensioning of all cables). The accuracy of the estimated tensions by the vibration method has been improved by employing proper effective lengths of the cables. The measured tensions are compared with the result of the lift-off tests and design tensions. The vibration method shows very good performance in monitoring the changing tensions according to the construction phase with minimal error.

  • Of all the site logistics technologies in high-rise building construction, both vertical and horizontal move plan, are the most imperative factors. And the horizontal plan follows lift-up plan as of the vertical plan. However though it may be, temporary lifts on site are numbered by heuristic formulas. The quantity of finishing material cannot be converted into lift-up load per finishing material. The lift-up plan cannot be evaluated the feasibility for finishing material move plan by a reasonable evaluation methodology. The horizontal plan is far from the vertical one. And the information as an input data for the horizontal plan is devoid of package unit size, length, and volume per finishing material. These can hardly result in reasonable and detail decision on how much to use temporary lifts, how long to use these, and where to deposit each finishing material. Therefore, this study is to suggest a decision-making model that can integrate vertical and horizontal material move plan in high-rise building construction and make a decision the plans systematically. And the study is to explain the concept, methodology, and contents of the model applied to a virtual project, named as MT 130 (Millennium Tower 130). By the model, the planner can shift his/her thinking framework on site logistics management products-oriented Into process-oriented. He/she can manage a project by the framework as system thinking, evaluate the feasibility of a lift-up plan, and decide the horizontal plan integrated with the lift-up.

  • The volume of material and number of workers mobilized has been on the rise in line with the domestic projects getting higher, larger and complex currently. Particularly for the project in downtown, delivering the resources in timely manner is very crucial in carrying out the overall project as scheduled. Inappropriate lifting plan often causes inefficiency over the entire project, resulting in increase in schedule and cost. Despite of such importance of lifting plan for architectural work, lifting plans at the most of domestic projects, except a few cases for large scale high-rise buildings, have been heavily dependent on engineer's personal experience and intuition alone. To deal with such problems, the study was intended to develop and suggest a systematic and objective process for determining the lift, categorizing the lifting equipment into the two types, one for workers and another for material.

  • A multi-objective design exploration for a three-element airfoil consisted of a slat, a main wing, and a flap was carried out. The lift curve improvement is important to design high-lift system, thus design has to be performed with considered multi-angle. The objective functions considered here are to maximize the lift coefficient at landing and near stall conditions simultaneously. Kriging surrogate model which was constructed based on several sample designs is introduced. The solution space was explored based on the maximization of Expected Improvement (EI) value corresponding to objective functions on the Krigingmodels. The improvement of the model and the exploration of the optimum can be advanced at the same time by maximizing EI value. In this study, a total of 90 sample points are evaluated using the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation(RANS) for the construction of the Kriging model. In order to obtain the information of the design space, two data mining techniques are applied to design result. One is functional Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) which can show quantitative information and the other is Self-Organizing Map(SOM) which can show qualitative information.

  • Once a structure fabricated with mass concrete is in a form of wall such as retaining wall, side walls of a concrete caisson and so on, cracks induced by hydration heat have been known to be governed by exterior restraints which are mainly related to the boundary conditions of the structure. However, it is thought that the degree of restraints can be alleviated considerably only if a lift height of concrete placement or a panel size of the wall is selected properly before construction. As a way of minimizing thermal cracking commonly observed in massive wall-typed structure, this study aimed at evaluating effects of geometrical configuration on the temperature rise and thermal stress through parametric study. Evaluation of the effect was also performed for cement types using anti-sulphate cement, blast furnace slag cement and cement blended with two mineral admixture and one ordinary Portland Cement. so called ternary blended cement. As a result of analytical study, it was found that a lift height of concrete placement is the most important factor in controlling thermal cracking in massive wall, and the increase of a lift height is not always positive to the crack occurrence as not expected.

  • The efficient vertical lift planning has been brought into relief in high-rise building construction projects. Particularly, the selection and stability examination of the tower cranes is the most important elements in vertical lift planning. Therefore, professional knowledge is needed to full fill the site condition for the plan. However, there are short of the number of specialists and information about tower cranes. This study proposes a system for the selection of the optimum tower cranes (Opt-TC) in high-rise building construction projects. The Opt-TC can give the selection and stability examination of tower cranes at once in real-time.
