The use of cone-beam computed tomography(CBCT) has been proposed for guiding the delivery of radiation therapy. A kilovoltage imaging system capable of radiography, fluoroscopy, and cone-beam computed tomography(CT) has been integrated with a medical linear accelerator. A standard clinical linear accelerator, operating in arc therapy mode, and an amorphous-silicon (a-Si) with an on-board electronic portal imager can be used to treat palliative patient and verify the patient's position prior to treatment. On-board CBCT images are used to generate patient geometric models to assist patient setup. The image data can also, potentially, be used for dose reconstruction in combination with the fluence maps from treatment plan. In this study, the accuracy of Hounsfield Units of CBCT images as well as the accuracy of dose calculations based on CBCT images of a phantom and compared the results with those of using CT simulator images. Phantom and patient studies were carried out to evaluate the achievable accuracy in using CBCT and CT stimulator for dose calculation. Relative electron density as a function of HU was obtained for both planning CT stimulator and CBCT using a Catphan-600 (The Phantom Laboratory, USA) calibration phantom. A clinical treatment planning system was employed for CT stimulator and CBCT based dose calculations and subsequent comparisons. The dosimetric consequence as the result of HU variation in CBCT was evaluated by comparing MU/cCy. The differences were about 2.7% (3-4MU/100cGy) in phantom and 2.5% (1-3MU/100cGy) in patients. The difference in HU values in Catphan was small. However, the magnitude of scatter and artifacts in CBCT images are affected by limitation of detector's FOV and patient's involuntary motions. CBCT images included scatters and artifacts due to In addition to guide the patient setup process, CBCT data acquired prior to the treatment be used to recalculate or verify the treatment plan based on the patient anatomy of the treatment area. And the CBCT has potential to become a very useful tool for on-line ART.)

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the transfer of different occlusal forces in various skeletal malocclusions using finite element analysis (FEA). Methods: Three representative human cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of three skeletal malocclusions were obtained from the Department of Orthodontics, Yonsei University Dental Hospital, Seoul, South Korea. The CBCT scans were read into the visualization software after separating bones and muscles by uploading the CBCT images into Mimics (Materialise). Two separate three-dimensional (3D) files were exported to visualize the solid morphology of skeletal outlines without considering the inner structures. Individual dental impressions were taken and stone models were scanned with a 3D scanner. These images were integrated and occlusal motions were simulated. Displacement and Von Mises stress were measured at the nodes of the FEA models. The displacement and stress distribution were analyzed. FEA was performed to obtain the 3D deformation of the mandibles under loads of 100, 150, 200, and 225 kg. Results: The distortion in all three skeletal malocclusions was comparable. Greater forces resulted in observing more distortion in FEA. Conclusions: Further studies are warranted to fully evaluate the impact of skeletal malocclusion on masticatory performance using information on muscle attachment and 3D temporomandibular joint movements.

Background and Objectives: To determine the anatomic position of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) canal in patients with mandibular prognathism using the cone-beam CT (CBCT). Materials and Methods: Fifty rami from 25 patients were evaluated. The images were taken by i-CAT and reconstructed 3-dimensionally using the Simplant 11 program. The linear distances between the IAN canal to the buccal cortex (a, $a^{\dag}$ and $a^{\ddag}$), from the IAN canal to the alveolar crest (b and $b^{\dag}$) and the anterior margin ($b^{\ddag}$) and finally the buccal cortical thickness (c, $c^{\dag}$ and $c^{\ddag}$) were measured at three reference planes (VP, OP and HP). Results: On the left side, the average distance of a, b and c were 7.12, 15.96 and 3.60 mm on the VP plane, respectively. On the OP, the distance of $a^{\dag}$, $b^{\dag}$ and $c^{\dag}$ was 6.11, 8.83 and 2.63 mm. For the HP, the distance of $a^{\ddag}$, $b^{\ddag}$ and $c^{\ddag}$ was 4.84, 10.11 and 2.30 mm. On the right side, the distance of a, b and c, on the VP, was 7.10, 16.13 and 3.42 mm, respectively. On the OP, the distance of $a^{\dag}$, $b^{\dag}$ and $c^{\dag}$ was 4.77, 8.75 and 2.68 mm. On the HP, the distance of $a^{\dag}$, $b^{\dag}$ and $c^{\ddag}$ was 4.55, 9.84 and 2.38 mm. Regarding the difference between genders, the distance in male's was longer than female's on the VP (p=0.019), and was thicker in males than females on the HP (p=0.002). Conclusion: The CBCT data provided accurate information about the location and course of the IAN.
Along with the developments of science technology, up-to-date medical radiation equipments are introduced. Those equipments has brought many progresses in diagnosing patients not only in the quantitative aspects but in the qualitative ones. Especially, in the case of dental radiography, patients can be exposed more than CT, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). In this study, we used human phantom and TLD-100H to measure the organ dose in each dental radiography and computed the effective dose according to ICRP (International Committee for Radioactivity Prevention) 60, 103. We measured the effective dose to be 5.1 and $29.5{\mu}Sv$ in the panoramic radiography and 11.2 and $14.4{\mu}Sv$ in the cephalometric radiography respectively. We also executed the CBCT and CT test on the maxillaries and the mandibles and found the amounts of effective dose were 53.7, 209.6, 129, and $391.5{\mu}Sv$ respectively in the CBCT and $93.3{\mu}$, 139.5, 282.7 and $489.7{\mu}Sv$ in the CT test. Consequently, it was shown that the effective dose in the CBCT test was lower than one in the CT test, but was higher in both panoramic and cephalometric radiography.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate possible differences in the location of the inferior alveolar canal in male and female Egyptians. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional retrospective study involved the evaluation of 210 CBCT scans of Egyptian individuals (18-70 years old). The inferior alveolar canal was localized by measuring 8 linear dimensions: 2 for the vertical localization of the mental foramen (superior and inferior to the mental foramen), 4 at the first molar bifurcation for the vertical and horizontal localization of the inferior alveolar canal (superior, inferior, buccal, and lingual to the inferior alveolar canal), and 2 for the horizontal localization of the mandibular foramen (anterior and posterior to the mandibular foramen). The measurements were statistically analyzed via comparative analysis, stepwise logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: Six of the 8 measured distances differed to a statistically significant extent between the sexes. Regression analysis suggested a logistic function with a concordance index of 84%. The diagnostic accuracy capabilities of the linear measurements as sex predictors were calculated using ROC analysis, and the 6 best predictors for sex determination were selected and ranked from highest to lowest predictive power. Moreover, combining these 6 predictors increased the predictive power to 84%. Conclusion: The location of the inferior alveolar canal in the Egyptian population varies significantly by sex; accordingly, this anatomic landmark could be used as a reliable indicator of sexual dimorphism.

Purpose: This study was conducted to develop an evidence-based clinical imaging diagnostic guideline for implant planning, taking into account efficacy, benefits, and risks. Materials and Methods: The guideline development process employed the adaptation methodology used for Korean clinical imaging guidelines(K-CIG). Core databases(Ovid-Medline, Ovid-Embase, National Guideline Clearinghouse, Guideline International Network) and domestic databases (KoreaMed, KMbase, and KoMGI) were searched for guidelines. The retrieved articles were analyzed by 2 reviewers, and articles were selected using well-established inclusion criteria. Results: The search identified 294 articles, of which 3 were selected as relevant guidelines. Based on those 3 guidelines, 3 recommendations for implant planning were derived. Conclusion: We recommend radiography or cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning for individual patients judged to require a cross-sectional image after reading of a panoramic X-ray image and a conventional intraoral radiological image. Various steps should be taken to raise awareness of these recommendations among clinicians and the public, and K-CIG should be regularly reviewed and revised.

One or two mesiodens are mostly common to the clinician. However, three mesiodens is rarely found and can cause complications such as orthodontic problems or interruptions of the adjacent teeth with more than 1 or 2 mesiodens. Many factors cause irregularities in the permanent dentition. Mesiodens, especially in the anterior maxilla, can disturb the eruption of adjacent permanent teeth and cause diastemas, ectopic eruptions, root resorption, or the formation of dentigerous cysts. The early diagnosis of mesiodens is important for preventing such complications, and the timing of intervention should be based on their location and number. Periodic checkups and improved diagnostic devices make it easy to find mesiodens and associated complications. In this case, 3 supernumerary teeth in the maxillary anterior region were affecting the eruption of the adjacent permanent incisors. To minimize complications and preserve the deciduous teeth, the three supernumerary teeth were extracted in 2 steps. Since cone-beam computed tomography was not available, a brace wire was used to measure the depth of the mesiodens.

Objective: To evaluate the presurgical orthodontic tooth movement of mandibular teeth after dental decompensation for skeletal Class III deformities on the basis of vertical skeletal patterns. Methods: This cohort was comprised of 62 patients who received presurgical orthodontic treatment. These patients were divided into 3 groups according to their vertical skeletal patterns. Changes in the positions of the mandibular central incisor, canine, premolar, and 1st molar after presurgical orthodontic treatment were measured using a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) superimposition method. Results: The incisors moved forward after dental decompensation in all 3 groups. The canines in group I and the 1st premolars in groups I and III also moved forward. The incisors and canines were extruded in groups I and II. The 1st and 2nd premolars were also extruded in all groups. Vertical changes in the 1st premolars differed significantly between the groups. We also observed lateral movement of the canines in group III and of the 1st premolar, 2nd premolar, and 1st molar in all 3 groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Movement of the mandibular incisors and premolars resolved the dental compensation. The skeletal facial pattern did not affect the dental decompensation, except in the case of vertical changes of the 1st premolars.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the amount of resorption and thickness of labial bone in anterior maxillary implant using cone beam computed tomography with Hitachi CB Mercuray (Hitachi, Medico, Tokyo, Japan). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty-one patients with 26 implants were followed-up and checked with CBCT. 21 OSSEOTITE $NT^{(R)}$. (3i/implant Innovations, Florida, USA) and 5 $OSSEOTITE^{(R)}$. implants (3i/implant Innovations, Florida, USA) were placed at anterior region and they were positioned vertically at the same level of bony scallop of adjacent teeth. Whenever there was no lesion or labial bone was intact, immediate placement was tried as possible as it could be. Generated bone regeneration was done in the patients with the deficiency of hard tissue using $Bio-Oss^{(R)}$. (Geistlich, Wolhusen, Switzerland) and $Bio-Gide^{(R)}$. (Geistlich, Wolhusen, Switzerland). Second surgery was done in 6 months after implant placement and provisionalization was done for 3 months. Definite abutment was made of titanium abutment with porcelain, gold and zirconia, and was attached after provisionalization. Two-dimensional slices were created to produce sagittal, coronal, axial and 3D by using OnDemand3D (Cybermed, Seoul, Korea). RESULTS. The mean value of bone resorption (distance from top of implant to labial bone) was $1.32 \;{\pm}\; 0.86\; mm$ and the mean thickness of labial bone was $1.91 \;{\pm}\; 0.45 \;mm$. CONCLUSION. It is suggested that the thickness more than 1.91 mm could reduce the amount and incidence of resorption of labial bone in maxillary anterior implant.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to radiographically and clinically compare the effect of extracellular matrix (ECM) membranes on dimensional alterations following a ridge preservation procedure. Methods: One of 2 different ECM membranes was applied during a ridge preservation procedure. A widely used ECM membrane (WEM; Bio-Gide, Geistlich Biomaterials, Wolhusen, Switzerland) was applied in the treatment group and a newly developed ECM membrane (NEM; Lyso-Gide, Oscotec Inc., Seongnam, Korea) was applied in the control group. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and alginate impressions were obtained 1 week and 6 months after the ridge preservation procedure. Results were analyzed using the independent t-test and the nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test. Results: There were no significant differences between the ECM membranes in the changes in the dimension, width, and height of the extraction socket or the quantity of bone tissue. Conclusions: The NEM showed comparable clinical and radiographic results to the WEM following the ridge preservation procedure.
