  • In the study, a numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of an inverter system inside a panel for three locations (bottom, middle and top). A conjugate heat transfer is simulated using a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) code since the heat transfer through the surrounding panel walls is important. It is shown that the heat flux through the left wall, which is important for the safety of the electronic equipment, is the biggest when the inverter is located at bottom. On the other hand, the heat flux through the left wall is negligible when the inverter at middle or top. It is also found that the heat flux to the surrounding walls is the lowest when the inverter is at middle.

  • The performance prediction of a planar-type solid oxide fuel ceil is conducted by a computational analysis. The transport processes are formulated with the help of a simplified treatment of heat generation by the electrochemical reaction. From the result of the computational analysis, it is shown that the electrochemical reaction is closely related to the transport phenomena inside a solid oxide fuel cell. Transport phenomena including heat and mass transfer have influence on the distribution of local current density and as a result, on the performance characteristics of the fuel cell. Computational analysis is also extended to the parametric study to investigate the performance behavior of the fuel cell with different amount of supplied fuel flow rates. It is also demonstrated that the mathematical formulation and computational procedures proposed in this study can be applied to prove the importance of the specific TPB(Three-Phase-Boundary) area in the manufacturing process of electrodes in a solid oxide fuel cell.

  • The present study numerically investigates the natural convection heat transfer in a 2-D square cavity containing a centered heat conducting body. Special emphasis is given to the influences of the Rayleigh number, the dimensionless conducting body size, and the ratio of the thermal diffusivity of the body to that of the fluid on the natural convection heat transfer in overall concerned region. The analysis reveals that the fluid flow and heat transfer processes are governed by all of them. Results for isotherms, vector plots and wall Nusselt numbers are reported for Pr = 0.71 and relatively wide ranges of the other parameters. Heat transfer across the cavity, in comparison to that in the absence of a body, are enhanced (reduced) in general by a body with a thermal diffusivity ratio less (greater) than unity. It is also found that the heat transfer attains a minimum as the body size is increased with a thermal diffusivity ratio greater than unity.

  • Thermal-fluid analysis is performed numerically to figure out the characteristics of heat transfer in a thermosyphon varying with the aspect ratio of geometry and the filling ratio of working fluid. The computational results are reasonable compared with the experimental data and visualized. The thermal resistance and the convective heat transfer coefficients are evaluated with the aspect ratio of thermosyphon and the filling ratio of working fluid, respectively. In conclusion, the thermal resistance decreases as the length of evaporator increases. However, the variation of a condenser length is nearly independent on the thermal resistance. In order to raise the performance of thermosyphon, the working fluid needs to be filled over 75%. In addition, Nusselt numbers in the evaporator and the condenser show 275 and 304, respectively.

  • This study investigates anti-icing design by conjugate heat transfer analysis in lab-scale printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) for supply of cryogenic high pressure liquid hydrogen. The conjugate heat transfer analysis by using computational dynamics (CFD) provided various temperature distributions at important locations in PCHE heat exchanger and predicted the possibility of freezing in hot channel. And, the effect of inlet temperature of glycol water was analyzed in order to resolve the freezing problem in PCHE.

  • This paper addresses a numerical method for predicting transient temperature distributions in the wall of a curved pipe subjected to internal laminar thermally-stratified flow. A simple and convenient numerical method of treating the unsteady conjugate heat transfer in non-orthogonal coordinate systems is presented. Numerical calculations are performed for the transient evolution of thermal stratification in two curved pipes, where one has thick wall and the other has so thin wall that its presence can be negligible in the heat transfer analysis. The predicted results show that the thermally stratified flow and transient conjugate heat transfer in a curved pipe with a finite wall thickness can be satisfactorily analyzed by the present numerical method, and that the neglect of wall thickness in the prediction of pipe wall temperature distributions can provide unacceptably distorted results for the cases of pipes with thick wall such as safety related-piping systems of nuclear power plant.

  • In this study, the heat transfer and flow field of condenser used on Kim-chi refrigerator is analysed with numerical method. Main objective is to present the base data for designing new condenser model with improvement of heat transfer performance. For CFD analysis, a commercial code, STAR-CCM+ was used. The water was used for the inner working fluid and the air was used for the outer fluid. The condenser type used in this study is a flat plate fin-and-tube heat exchanger. As factors for performance analysis, the effect of condenser geometry and air velocity was investigated. As a result, it has been observed that there is a suitable fin pitch with which heat transfer performance of condenser is maximized.

  • Atmospheric icing may have significant effects not only on safety of aircraft in air, but also on performance of wind turbine and power networks on ground. Thus, ice protection measure should be developed to protect these systems from icing hazards. A very efficient method is the electro-thermal de-icing based on a process by which ice accretion is melted and blown away through aerodynamic forces. In this computational study, a state-of-the-art icing code, FENSAP-ICE, was used for the analysis of electro thermal de-icing system. Computational results including detailed conjugate heat transfer analysis were then validated with experimental data. Further, the computational model was applied to the DU21 airfoil section of NREL 5MW wind turbine with calculated heater parameters.
