  • The present study addresses experimental results to investigate the details of the near field flow structures produced in the under-expanded, dual, coaxial, swirling, jet. The sonic swilling jets are emitted from a sonic inner nozzle and the outer annular nozzle produces the co/counter swirling streams against the primary swirling jet, respectively. The interactions between both the secondary annular swirling and primary inner supersonic swirling jets are quantified by the pilot impact and static pressure measurements, and visualized by using the Schlieren optical method. The experiment has been performed fur different swirl intensities and pressure ratios. The results obtained show that the secondary co-swirling jet significantly changes the inner under-expanded swirling jet, such as the recirculation zone, pressure distribution, through strong interactions between both the swirling jets, and the effect of the secondary counter-swirling jet on the primary inner jet is similar to the secondary co-swirl jet case.

  • An analytic approach is attempted to predict the amplification of turbulence in compressible flows experiencing one-dimensional and axisymmetric bulk dilatation. The variations of vortex radius and vorticity are calculated, and then the amplification of turbulence is obtained from them by tracking three representative vortices. For a one-dimensionally compressed flow, the present analysis slightly underestimates the amplification of velocity fluctuations and turbulent kinetic energy, relative to that of rapid distortion theory in the solenoidal limit. For an axisymmetrically distorted flow, the amplification of velocity fluctuations and turbulent kinetic energy depend not only on the density ratio but also on the ratio of streamwise mean velocities, which represents streamwise vortex contraction/stretching. In all flows considered, the amplification of turbulence is dictated by the mean density ratio. In the axisymmetric flow, streamwise vortex stretching/contraction, however, alters the amplification slightly.

  • Computational work using the axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes Equations is carried out to predict the discharge coefficient of mass flow through a micro-critical nozzle. Several kinds of turbulence models and wall functions are employed to validate the computational predictions. The computed results are compared with the previous experimented ones. The present computations predict the experimental discharge coefficients with a reasonable accuracy. It is found that the standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model with the standard wall function gives a best prediction of the discharge coefficients. The displacement thickness of the nozzle wall boundary layer is evaluated at the nozzle throat and is well compared to a prediction obtained by an empirical equation. The resulting displacement thickness of the wall boundary layer is about 2% to 0.6% of the diameter of the nozzle throat for the Reynolds numbers of 2000 to 20000.

  • This study describes a theoretical and experimental investigation of gas wave propagation in the pipe system. Most calculations of compressible flows in the pipe have been based on the method of characteristics. This technique has propensity to truncate waves and is difficult to apply to non-perfect gas. A method that describes the application of a two-step Lax-Wendroff acheme to solution of the unsteady one-dimentional flow in the pipe was developed. Theoretical calculations using both the method of characteristics and the two-step Lax-Wendroff method are presented including a realistic model for heat transfer and friction processes. In the present work, account is taken of the nonlinear behavior. For sections of parallel pipe, an one dimensional unsteady homentropic analysis is employed, and a numerical solution is obtained with the aid of a digital computer, using the method of characteristics and two-step Lax-Wendroff method. This analysis is then combined with boundary models, based on a quasi-steady flow approach, to give a complete treatment of the flow behavior in the pipe system.

  • A three-dimensional flow field induced by two trains passing by each other inside a tunnel is studied based on the numerical simulation of the three-dimensional compressible Euler/Navier-Stokes equations formulated in the finite difference approximation. Domain decomposition method with the FSA(fortified solution algorithm) interface scheme is used to treat this moving-body problem. The computed resluts show basic characteristic of the flow field created when two trains passing by each other. History of the pressure distributions and the aerodynamic forces acting on the trains are mailnly discussed. The results indicate that the phenomenon is complicated due to the interaction of the flow induced by two trains. Strong side force occurs between the two trains when the front portion of the opposite train passes by. It fluctuates rapidly and maximum suction force occurs when two trains are aligned side by side. The results also indicate the effectiveness of the present numerical method for moving boundary problems.

  • After the collapse of the Tacoma bay bridge at Tacoma Washington, the accurate prediction of aerodynamics became crucial to the sound design of bridges. CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) becomes important tool for the prediction on wind effects on the bridge due to the recent development of CFD. The usage of CFD is further prompted by the advantages in using CFD, such as low-cost and fast feed-back of design. In this paper, an unsteady compressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes code is used for the computation of the flow over bridges. Coakley's q-${\omega}$ two-equation turbulence model is used for the turbulent eddy viscosity. For accurate and stable computations, the local preconditioning method is adapted to the code. Aerodynamic characteristics of a couple bridges are presented to show the validity and the accuracy of the method.

  • A solid rocket motor has quite complex physical condition such exothermal chemical reaction in subsonic area and supersonic ex pansion in a converging-diverging nozzle. To introduce a simulation tool for compressible flow in supersonic range as well as incompressible chemical reaction zone in a whole rocket nozzle is a essential demand. Since the flow vary subsonic to super sonic, the convergence in computation becomes very low and unstable in a whole domain of rocket motor. This paper reports the 2-D Axisymmetric and simple 3-D solid propellant combustion and flow of gases in rocket motor by using a precondi tioning, shear stress turbulence modeling, AUSM(p). To simulate the simplified combustion process, Double base solid propellant is used to calculate reaction of solid propellant.

  • An axisymmetric Navier-Stokes procedure has been developed to analyze the pulse jet flow in a ceramic filter unit for the dust dislodging process. Using Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model as a closure relationship, the SIAF(Scalar Implicit Approximate Factorization) algorithm together with the ${\delta}^k-Correction$ iterative time marching scheme is adopted to solve the unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations. After some validation tests, the code has been applied to solve the pulse jet flow and examine the effects of geometry and reservoir pressure condition on the pressure level inside the filter unit. To avoid dealing with the uncertainty of such factors as the cohesion of the collected dust and the adhesion of the dust to the medium and also to simplify the analysis, the filter wall is assumed to be impermeable. The results for various test cases are presented.

  • Flight bodies are subject to highly unstable and severe flow conditions during taking-off and landing periods. In this situation, the flight bodies essentially experience accelerating or decelerating flows, and the aerodynamic characteristics can be completely different from those of steady flows. In the present study, unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of an aerofoil accelerating at subsonic speeds are investigated using a computational method. Two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Navier-Stokes simulations are conducted with a one-equation turbulence model, Spalart-Allmaras, and a fully implicit finite volume scheme. An acceleration factor is defined to specify the unsteady aerodynamics of the aerofoil. The results show that the acceleration of the subsonic aerofoil generally leads to a variation in aerodynamic characteristics and it is more significant at angles of attack.

  • This study is investigated into the dynamic effect of the manifold configuration during the gas exchange processes using both simulation and experiment, In theoretical study on the flow analysis, the characteristic method is applied to solve the compressible unsteady flow equation, involving the several steady flow boundary conditions. In order to excute the engine experiment efficiently, a data acquisition system is configured by using A/D converter and PC. Good results which coincided experimental data with simulation output were obtained, and it shows that this simulation method can be applied to obtain the optimal design parameters in the intake and exhaust systems.
