Cycle Resolved NO Emissions and Its Relation with Combustion Chamber Pressure in an S.I. Engine with Fast Response NO Analyzer

  • A fast response NO analyzer was applied to investigate the relation between cycle-by-cycle NO emissions and combustion chamber pressure. NO emissions were sampled at an isolated exhaust manifold of 4-stroke spark ignition engine to avoid the interference of exhaust gas from other cylinders. The linear correlation analysis was performed with collected data of NO emissions and combustion chamber pressure with respect to the various air-fuel mixture ratios and engine loads. The sampled data sets were obtained during 200 cycles at each operating condition. The results showed that there was a typical pattern in NO emissions from an exhaust port through a cycle. It was possible to set a block of crank angle in which the linear correlation coefficient between NO emissions and combustion chamber pressure was high. As the engine load increased, NO emissions were more dependent on combustion chamber pressure after TDC. It was also analyzed that the correlation between two parameters with respect to air-fuel mixture ratio tended to increase as mixture went leaner. Furthermore, this correlation coefficient for the mixture near the lean limit seemed to be kept high even though combustion was unstable.

  • A fast response $CO_2$ ($fCO_2$) analyzer for real-time measurement of carbon dioxide concentration during transient states of internal combustion engines has been developed. This analyzer uses non-dispersive infrared absorption (NDIR) technique for measuring $CO_2$ concentration and Kalman filter for removing noise components from output signals. The analyzer has good linearity, repeatability and drift with a response time of 11 ms; it is sufficiently fast to detect $CO_2$ concentration during transient states of internal combustion engines. The $fCO_2$ analyzer was used to measure transient $CO_2$ concentration of exhaust gas of the SI engine with a standard gas analyzer, and the signal of the $fCO_2$ analyzer was compared to that of the standard gas analyzer. The two concentrations were well matched during the steady state, and the $fCO_2$ analyzer could measure the variations of $CO_2$ concentration during the transient state.

  • Due to the development of the petroleum refining technology and continuously increased demand from markets, a quantity of gasoline and diesel oil produced from a restricted quantity of crude oil has been increasing, and residual fuel to be used at marine diesel engines has been gradually becoming low quality. As a result, it was recently reported that trouble oils which cause abnormal combustion such as knocking with extreme noise and misfire from internal combustion engines were increasing throughout the world. In this study, an author investigated ignitability and combustion quality by using combustion analyzer with constant volume(FCA, Fuel Combustion Analyzer) and middle speed diesel engine about MDO(Marine Diesel Oil), HFO(Heavy Fuel Oil), LCO(Light Cycle Oil) and Blend-HFO which was blended LCO of 1000 liters with HFO of 600 liters. Moreover, for betterment of ignitability and combustion quality of injected fuels, multi-injection experiment was carried out in the diesel engine using Blend-HFO.   • In this study, the combustion characteristics were investigated with the variation of design factors on multiple slit gas burner. The design factors consist of slit height, width, spacing, and inner length. The combustion characteristics were made analysis of the CO emission and NOx emission by using CO analyzer and NOx analyzer. The lower perimeter to area and the narrow spacing extends the lift-flame limit. The CO emission increases with the increasing perimeter to area ratio at the same condition. The NOx emission is found to be less significant with the port perimeter to area ratio. The flame interference might highly depend on the spacing and port perimeter to area ratio, and it also affects the burner performance.

  • This study is a part of the project that investigates a possibility of using methyl/ethyl butyrate as an alternative material of MTBE. To investigate characteristics of the two materials, a 2.0L 4-cylinders SI engine that was coupled to an 160kw EC engine dynamometer was used and operated several conditions. Two exhaust gas analyzer was used to measure CO, NOx and THC of after and before of a catalyst. Also, to compare combustion characteristics of the fuels a combustion analyzer was used for measuring pressure of inside of a cylinder. The results show no special difference between MTBE and the two materials from the emission and combustion characteristics aspect.

압축 착화 기관의 연소 변동 특성에 관한 연구

  • This paper deals with the theoretical prediction and cyclic variation of combustion characteristics in a four stroke, single0cylinder, diesel engine. Theoretical calculations employed a simple empirical model of analysis of energy equation for the thermodynamic system of engine cylinder. The cyclic variation of combustion characteristics is investigated, in term of frequency distribution and standard deviation of peak characteristics, as obtained by combustion analyzer system. The results of theoretical prediction are shown to be in close agreement with the experimental data. The effect of fuel injection timing, engine speed, cooling water temperature, and the compression ratio on the cyclic variations of combustion characteristics were discussed.

산소공여입자에 의한 석탄의 직접연소 특성 (Direct Combustion Characteristics of Coal by Oxygen Carrier)

  • Direct combustion characteristics of coal and oxygen carrier were measured in the thermogravimetric analyzer using four coals and two different oxygen carriers. The direct combustion efficiency decreased in order of Roto, Kideco, Sunhwa and Hyper coal for both oxygen carriers. Moreover, OCN703-1100 oxygen carrier showed better combustion efficiency than OCN706-1100 oxygen carrier for all four coals. The reduction characteristics of two oxygen carriers for $CH_4$, CO and $H_2$ gases were measured in the thermogravimetric analyzer to investigate why OCN703-1100 oxygen carrier showed better combustion efficiency than OCN706-1100 for all coals. The OCN703-1100 oxygen carrier represented higher reduction rate than OCN706-1100 for all reducing gases. Moreover, the total pore area and the porosity of OCN703-1100 were higher than those of OCN706-1100 oxygen carrier. The total volatile gas and volatile components of four coals were measured in a batch type fluidized bed reactor to investigate why the direct combustion efficiency decreased in order of Roto, Kideco, Sunhwa and Hyper coal for both oxygen carriers. The direct combustion efficiency was proportional to the total amount of ($CH_4+CO+H_2$) produced during devolatilization of coals.

VOCs 연소용 Mn-PC 촉매 특성 (Catalytic Characteristics of Mn-PC for VOCs Combustion)

  • 본 연구에서는 Mn-PC 촉매와 상압유통식 반응장치를 이용하여 $200{\sim}380^{\circ}C$ 범위에서 VOCs(아세트알데히드, 프로피온알데히드, 톨루엔) 연소반응을 수행하였다. 촉매 전처리(air, $450^{\circ}C$, 1 hr, 60 cc/min) 전 후의 물리화학적 특성변화 조사는 TGA (Thermogravimetric Analyzer), BET (Brunauer Emmett Teller), EA (Elemental Analyzer), XRD (X-ray Diffractometer) 및 SEM (Scanning Electronic Microscope)을 이용하여 파악하였다. TGA 분석결과 Mn-PC의 열중량(공기 분위기) 감소는 $419^{\circ}C$에서 88 wt.%를 나타내었으며, 전처리 후 비표면적은 크게 증가하는 것으로 확인되었다. EA 분석결과 전처리를 통해서 유기물 성분은 분해 또는 연소되어 거의 관찰되지 않는 것으로 파악되었다. 또한 XRD분석을 통해 Mn-PC 촉매가 전처리 후 새로운 형태의 산화물인 $Mn_3O_4$로 전이됨을 확인하였다. 그리고 SEM 분석결과 전처리 과정에서 많은 micropore가 생성된 것으로 관찰되었다. 프로피온알데히드 연소의 경우 전처리한 Mn-PC는 $Mn_3O_4$와 fresh한 Mn-PC 보다 우수한 촉매활성을 나타내었다. 전처리된 Mn-PC상에서 VOCs 연소 효과는 톨루엔 < 아세트알데히드 < 프로피온알데히드 순서로 나타났다.

  • To check adaptability of low ash coal(hyper coal) to chemical looping combustion, reaction characteristics of two coals (Roto and Hyper coal) with two oxygen carriers (NiO/bentonite, OCN703-1100) have been investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer. Hyper coal represented low combustion rate and high ignition temperature, high volatile content and high devolatilization rate, and therefore, showed worse oxygen transfer during successive 10 cycle reduction-oxidation test than Roto coal. Finally we selected Roto coal as the candidate coal for chemical looping combustion. For Roto coal, OCN703-1100 particle showed better oxygen transfer than NiO/bentonite particle. During 10 cycle reduction oxidation test, change of the extent of oxidation (Wo) was negligible and we could conclude that both oxygen carriers have sufficient regeneration ability.

압축착화 엔진에서 디젤-가솔린 Dual Fuel이 연소 및 배기 특성에 미치는 영향 (Fuel Injection System on Combustion and Exhaust Emissions Characteristics in Compression Ignition Engines)

  • The present study describes the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions in compression ignition engines using diesel-gasoline dual fuel. For investigating combustion characteristics, diesel fuel was injected directly in a single-cylinder compression ignition engine with a common-rail injection system and gasoline fuel was injected into a premixed chamber installed in an intake port. In order to investigate exhaust emission characteristics, exhaust gas was measured by emission analyzer and smoke meter. The experimental results showed that cases of diesel-gasoline dual fuel combustion exhibited extended ignition delay and reduced peak combustion pressure compared to those of directly injected diesel fuel cases. Furthermore, premixed gasoline-air mixture reduced NOx emissions due to low peak of rate of heat release(ROHR).
