  • This study was carried out to compare the properties of Com-Ply Boards with those of OSBs. These two kinds of boards were made of same flakes. Com-Ply Boards were covered with three different thickness veneers, such as 4mm, 3mm, and 2.5mm. All manufactured Com-Ply Boards and OSBs were 12mm thick. In MOR, all Com-Ply Boards were higher than OSB, and especially 3mm-veneer and 2.5mm-veneer Com-Ply Board were highest. But OSB showed 420kg/$cm^2$. 3mm-veneer Com-Ply Board showed the highest internal bonding 7.0kg/$cm^2$ and then 2.5mm-veneer showed 6.8kg/$cm^2$, and OSB showed 6.6kg/$cm^2$. Screw holding strength showed the high value 23.9kg/$cm^2$, 25.5kg/$cm^2$, and 29.3kg/$cm^2$ respectively at 3mm-veneer, 2.5mm-veneer Com-Ply Board and OSB. Thickness swelling of Com-Ply Boards was lower than that of OSB, but Water absorption of OSB was lower. Finally it was very encouraging that all properties of OSB without veneer, whose cost is higher than flake and whose properties is better, were not worse than those of Com-Ply Board with veneer. It seems That more researches on OSB will be required.

  • Urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin was formulated similarly to plywood resin in the laboratory. The synthesized UF resin adhesive was mixed with extender, filler and acid catalyst. The mixture contained 56.1% total solids and 43.9% water. The mixes was used to bond five Com-Ply types using Korean wood species. The Com-Ply made were tested for shear strength and wood failure according to KS F 3101 ordinary plywood as well as for bending strength per KS F 3104 particleboard. The performance test results showed good strength properties for all Com-Ply types made in this study. This result represented that the UF resin adhesive mix was adequate for bonding Com-Ply with domestic wood species.

  • This research was carried out to investigate the effects of cyclic humidification on the dimensional stability of particleboard manufactured according the three specific gravity levels and com-ply fabricated with a core of particleboard and veneer or plywood as the face and back materials. Both the particleboard and com-ply were subjected to four cycles of 50-90-50% relative humidity. The results are summarized as follows: Particleboard and com-ply followed a clear pattern of increasing dimensions and weight on the adsorption cycle and decreasing dimensions and weight on the humidification cycle. After the fourth cycle, the dimensions and weight of both particleboard and com-ply were greater than those originally measured. The greater part of increase in occurred during the first humidification cycle. The specific gravity of particleboard has a significant effect thickness and volume change. The dimensional stability of com-ply was better than that of particleboard. In addition, the dimensional stability of com-ply bonded with plywood was better than that of com-ply bonded with veneer.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the linear expansion and resistance properties of a composite board (com-ply). This board was made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) laminated using avocado (Persea americana), mahogany (Swietenia mahogani), and pine (Pinus merkusii) veneers. These three types of veneers were laminated on both surfaces of the MDF using adhesives, namely, epoxy and isocyanate. Glue (250 g·m-2) was spread on the surface, followed by cold press for 3 h with an applied pressure of 15 kg·cm-2. The research result revealed that com-ply exhibited an increased dimensional stability compared with MDF, indicated by reduction in water absorption, thickness swelling, and linear expansion. The com-ply made of the pine veneer and isocyanate adhesive exhibited high density, water absorption, thickness swelling, and screw withdrawal load. The com-ply that exhibited the strongest resistance to drywood termite attacks was the one made of the mahogany veneer and isocyanate adhesive. Moreover, the com-ply that exhibited the biggest weight loss (3.6 %) was made of the pine veneer and epoxy adhesive. The results of this research may facilitate in manufacturing com-ply using the selected veneer and adhesive without the application of hot press.

  • This research presents an improvement of the physical and mechanical properties of composite board (com-ply) made of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) coated with wood veneer of Pine (Pinus merkusii), Avocado (Persea Americana) and Mahogany (Swietenia mahogany). 1.5 mm thick veneers of those three wood types were adhered to the surface of OSB using two adhesive types: epoxy and isocyanate. The adhesive with the glue spread of $250g\;m^{-2}$ applied using single glue line was spread and then cold pressed with the pressure of $15kg\;cm^{-2}$ for 3 hours. The research result showed an improving dimension stability of com-ply, but not found on all parameters of physical property test. The moisture content seemed to be influenced by the com-ply type, yet not related to its thickness swelling, water absorption and linear expansion. The exception took place in the parallel linear expansion when immersed for 2 hours. The highest to the lowest increases of MOE and MOR were consecutively found on OSB coated with wood veneer of Pine, Mahogany and Avocado. However, the increases were statistically insignificant. The highest increasing screw hold power was found at the com-ply type AE (avocado veneer and epoxy adhesive) that was by 28%.

  • This study was performed to analyse cause of quality deterioration using byproduct of plywood and to determine physical and mechanical properties of particleboard used new bonding condition we found. The result of bending strength of Com-Ply board using EMDI is 57.7 $N/mm^2$ on linear direction and 25.1 $N/mm^2$ on vertical direction. EMDI has better water-resisting qualities than Urea formaldehyde adhesive according to result of thickness swelling and water absorption test. Pre-treatment soaked particle 72 hours in water caused increase of HCHO emission.

  • Natural Com Starch(NCS) spray system has been widely used In multiply board mill for the better bonding strength between board layers. However the unsuitable NCS spray system could lead to a drop in plybond efficiency of multiply board. It could also result in the accumulation of unretained-starch in the white water system, which could not only rise in BOD and COD level but also reduce the effects of rosin-alum sizing system and other additives. In this study, the simple and rapid method by UV-spectroscopy for measuring the starch contents in the white water was proposed, and the quantitative analysis for dissolved starch content in white water was carried out in two kinds of board production process. It could be confirmed that about 150 ppm of oxidized starch was retained in white water dewatered from undertop ply of multiply board process, and about 470 ppm of natural starch was dissolved in white water originated from unsuitable spraying system in the multiply board production lines for cup base paper.
