  • This paper recommends to teach technical writing as a part of the curriculum of engineering design courses. Some features of both engineering design and keystone design course as well as capstone design course for engineering students are studied before the relationship of those features with written communication are investigated. After the characteristics of collaborative writing are reviewed, some aspects of integration of teaching technical writing into engineering design courses are evaluated. Technical writing for engineering students is best taught by collaborative writing approach in engineering design courses.

  • In order to keep and increase a competitive potential, industrial enterprises have to reduce their costs for product development as well as shorten lead time in product development processes. Moreover they have to respond to market factors and conditions such as increasing demands for functionality and individuality of products, short product life cycles, high pressure on prices and time to market. The improved functional requirement in connection with high time and cost pressure lead to high risk in product development. Technological fine improvements in connection with high time and cost pressure lead to high development risk. To cope with these challenges many enterprises have to collaborate globally. The collaborative engineering in product development is aimed to create distributed collaborative corporations and to facilitate the management of design conflicts. This paper provides a methodology for analyzing collaborative design process as well as the tools and the framework to support collaborative product development. The methodology can identify the interdependences among design tasks and teams. The tools and framework are implemented to facilitate the management of product development process.

  • There are many researches on visual languages, but the most of them are difficult to support various collaborative interactions on a distributed multimedia environment. So, this paper suggests a collaborative visual language for interaction between multi-users. The visual language can describe a conceptual model for collaborative interactions between multi-users. Using the visual language, generated visual sentences consist of object icons and interaction operators. An object icon represents a user who is responsible for a collaborative activity, has dynamic attributes of a user, and supports flexible interaction between multi-users. An interaction operator represents an interactive relation between multi-users and supports various collaborative interactions. Merits of the visual language are as follows: supporting of both asynchronous interaction and synchronous interaction, supporting flexible interaction between multi-users according to participation or leave of users, supporting a user oriented modeling, etc. For example, an application to a workflow system for document approval is illustrated. So we could be found that the visual language shows a collaborative interaction.

  • This study developed and evaluated a learning model to improve collaborative problem-solving skills for nursing students taking physiology courses. This one-group pretest-posttest design used the jigsaw cooperative learning method on 30 nursing students from one local university. We analyzed the effect of a cooperative problem- solving learning model using SPSS 21.0 to compare changes in the students' collaborative self-efficacy, problem-solving abilities, and team-member exchange. As a result, the participants showed significant increases in collaborative self-efficacy, problem-solving ability, and team-member exchange after experiencing cooperative problem- solving learning model. Therefore, we will help nursing students improve their communication skills by enhancing their collaborative self-efficacy and help them solve problems effectively in conflict situations.

  • This paper describes the web-based collaborative learning system, in which the constructivism is used as a background theory. We designed and developed three modules (Learner Module, Instructor Module, Administrative Module) to promote the interactive communication between learners and instructors and to enable the self-directed collaborative learning. In addition, the assignment and evaluation sessions are closely linked with each other to ensure the high quality of the system. We expect this research helps to construct the efficient collaborative learning environment using the ICT(Information & Communication Technology).

  • To support asynchronous collaboration among remote users, collaborative applications provide collaboration services and environment through virtual workspaces. In general, collaborative applications support collaboration based on desktop-based personal computers, using the features such as resource sharing or asynchronous communication among users. Unfortunately, since those applications mainly run on personal computers, they do not easily support collaborative works in various places. In this paper, we describe the development of smartphone collaborative application which provides effective collaboration facilities like resource sharing through various types of workspaces or group communication, communicating with a WebDAV-based collaboration server. The developed application provides users with high accessibility through multi-touch/touch-slide based user-interfaces in mobile environment. To support effective communication with a collaboration server, we also present a WebDAV-based collaboration library using a collaboration protocol designed to analyze easily the responses from the collaboration server.

  • As collaborative works have been spread over the internet, the need for information systems providing virtual workspaces has grown rapidly. Through virtual workspaces, the members participating in those collaborative works share and exchange their information effectively. It is desirable that these systems can be extended according to various requests of users, providing reliable services. In this paper, we describe a group of components for supporting collaboration and the iPlace (internet workPlace) system developed with those components. The iPlace system provides effective sharing and reusing of information among the members of collaborative groups through personal workspaces-the private spaces on the Web for each user and shared workspaces-the shared spaces for each of those groups. In addition, implemented with EJB technology, it provides highly scalable and reliable services.

  • The current study examined the relationships between the adolescent's conflict resolution style and Big-Five personality factors, self-monitoring and self-esteem. Firstly, results showed that adolescent's big-five personality model affects their conflict resolution styles with their friends and peer group. In detail, the higher the neuroticism was, the stronger became the attack and avoidance strategies. The higher the extraversion was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the attack and avoidance strategies. The higher the agreeableness was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the attack strategy. The higher the conscientiousness was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the avoidance strategy. The higher the openness to experience was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the avoidance strategy. The higher the self-esteem was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the avoidance and attack strategies. The higher the self-monitoring was, the higher became the collaborative strategy and the lower became the avoidance strategy. Secondly, the big-five personality factors also affected the adolescent's conflict resolution styles. The extraversion, conscientiousness, and agreeableness positively affected the collaborative strategy. The neuroticism was positively related with the attack strategy, whereas agreeableness was negatively affected the attack strategy. The neuroticism and agreeableness were positively related with the avoidance strategy, whereas the extraversion was negatively affected the avoidance strategy. Limitations and suggestions for future study were discussed thereafter.

  • In this study, the effects of the small group collaborative learning on students' achievement, the retention of the achievement, communication anxiety, and science learning motivation were investigated. The aptitude-treatment interaction between the level of students' self-directed learning ability and the intervention was also examined. Two classes (38 students) from an elementary school were respectively assigned to a control group and a treatment group. A self-directed learning ability test, a communication anxiety test, and a science learning motivation test were administered as pretests. The intervention lasted for 8 class periods. After instruction, an achievement test, the communication anxiety test, and the science learning motivation test were administered. An achievement retention test were also administered after four weeks. The results indicated that there were significant treatmentaptitude interaction effects in the achievement test scores and the achievement retention test scores. In the communication anxiety and the science learning motivation, however, any significant difference was not found between the scores of the treatment group and the control group. Educational implications are discussed.

  • There have been proposed several movie recommendation algorithms based on Collaborative Filtering(CF). CF decides neighbors whose ratings are the most similar to each other and it predicts how well users will like new movies, based on ratings from neighbors. This paper proposes a new method to improve the result predicted by CF based on genres of the movies seen by users. The proposed method can be combined to the most of all existing CF algorithms. In this paper, a performance evaluation has been conducted between an existing simple CF algorithm and CF-Genre that is the proposed genre-based method added to the CF algorithm. The result shows that CF-Genre improves 3.3% in prediction performance over existing CF algorithms.
