  • The characteristics of the tool system give many effects into the costs and qualities for the finished components. Therefore, a tool life is one of the important issues on cold forging industry. However, since variables related with tool life are many complicated, the studies for solution should be investigated by the systematic research approach. In this study, heat-treatment of tool material is investigated to improve the tool life. Deep cryogenic treatment of tool steel is very efficient to improve the wear resistance due to the fine carbide. And, it is investigated that the shape and dimension of tool give effect into both tool life and quality of forged product.

  • The results of Reactivity-Initiated Accidents (RIA) experiments have been analysed and the main variables affecting the fuel failure propensity identified. Fuel burn-up aggravates the mechanical loading of the cladding, while corrosion, or better the hydrogen absorbed in the cladding as a consequence of corrosion, may under some conditions make the cladding brittle and more susceptible to failure. Experiments point out that corrosion impairs the fuel resistance for RIA transient occurring at cold conditions, whereas there is no evidence of important embrittlement effects at hot conditions, unless the cladding was degraded by oxide spalling. A fuel failure threshold correlation has been derived and compared with experimental data relevant for BWR and PWR fuel. The correlation can be applied to both cold and hot RIA transients, account taken for the lower ductility at cold conditions and for the different initial enthalpy. It can also be used for non-zero power transients, provided that a term accounting for the start-up power is incorporated. The proposed threshold is easy to use and reproduces the results obtained in the CABRI and NSRR tests in a rather satisfactory manner. The behaviour of advanced PWR alloys and of MOX fuel is discussed in light of the correlation predictions. Finally, a probabilistic approach has been developed in order to account for the small scatter of the failure predictions. This approach completes the RIA failure assessment in that after determining a best estimate failure threshold, a failure probability is inferred based on the spreading of data around the calculated best estimate value.

  • A new cold-adapted Arctic strain of Haematococcus pluvialis from Blomstrandhalv${\o}$ya Island (Svalbard) is described. This strain is predominantly always in non-motile palmelloid stage. Transmission electron microscopy showed the presence of very thick cell wall and abundant lipid vesicles in the palmelloids, including red and green cells. The external morphology of the non-motile palmelloid and motile bi-flagellated cells of our strain is similar to H. pluvialis; however it differs from H. pluvialis in physiology. Our strain is adapted to live and produce astaxanthin in the low temperature ($4-10^{\circ}C$), whilst the usual growth temperature for H. pluvialis is between $20-27^{\circ}C$. Phylogenetic analysis based on 18S rRNA gene data showed that our strain nested within the Haematococcus group, forming a sister relationship to H. lacustris and H. pluvialis, which are considered synonymous. Therefore, we identified our Arctic strain as H. pluvialis.

  • Motor core products are used as materials for electrical steel sheets and cold-rolled steel sheets according to the performance of motors. The cemented carbide material of the mold punch applied to the motor core material causes many troubles due to abrasion and burr problem. The selection of these materials has a great effect on the production life, mass production, product quality as well as mold life. The cemented carbide applied to the products of the motor core is recognized as a very important part. In this study, cold rolled steel sheet was applied to motor core SCP-1 steel 1.0mm, and The effects of abrasion and punching oil on the shear process were investigated for the selection of cemented carbide. Experiments were conducted to select and apply cemented carbide only for the motor core punch optimized for cold rolled steel. The results showed that the cemented carbide material of $CDK3^{***}$ produced the least wear and burrs.

  • A manufacturing process for a clutch gear which demands high strength and wear resistance, was developed by means of computer simulation. A preform was made by hot forging process and subsequent cold sizing process is applied to complete precise tooth part. Processes to obtain high dimensional accuracy and superior mechanical properties are analyzed and optimal heat treatment cycle to improve cold forgeability is introduced. Prototype was produced and the dimensional accuracy of the prototype was inspected to verify proposed process.

  • The 316LVM stainless steel that is widely used in surgical implant has been studied. The objective of this study is to develop the domestic production of the surgical implant materials. In the work, the metalllirgical phenomena, physical and chemical properties and biocompatibility of the materials are investigated. According to the experimental observation, corrosion resistance is strongly depended on the -ferrite structure and passive film, and mechanical properties are mainly depended on the cold reduction ratio. The -ferrite structure is minimized in the 16.651 Cr and 14%Ni contents, and yield strength is 104 kg/mm$^2$ at 45% cold reduction. Biocompatibility is excellent in the mouse body test for six weeks.

  • In this paper, we developed a physically-based micromechanical model for inelastic deformation of ceramic powders. The aggregate response of ceramic particles was modeled using the two-surface yield function which considered the shear-induced dilatancy caused by friction, rolling resistance and cohesion between powder particles and consolidation caused by plastic deformation of powder themselves under high compression. The constitutive equations were implemented into the user-subroutine VUMAT of finite element program ABAQUS/Explicit. The material parameters in the constitutive model were identified by calibrating the model to reproduce data from triaxial compression tests and simple compression tests. The density distribution obtained by using the proposed model was in good quantitative agreement with the experimental results of the triaxial compression and cold isostaic compression as well.

  • Niobium microalloying is effective in hot-rolled and cold-rolled steels by providing a fine-grained microstructure resulting in increased strength. To optimize the strengthening effect, alloy design and hot-rolling conditions have to be adapted. As a key issue the dissolution and precipitation characteristics of Nb are discussed in particular with regard to the run-out table conditions. It is then considered how the hot-rolled microstructure and the solute state of Nb interact with the hot-dip galvanizing cycle. The adjusted conditions allow controlling the morphology and distribution of phases in the cold-rolled annealed material. Additional precipitation hardening can be achieved as well. The derived options can be readily applied to produce conventional HSLA and IF high strength steels as well as to modern multiphase steels. It will be explained how important application properties such as strength, elongation, bendability, weldability and delayed cracking resistance can be influenced in a controlled and favorable way. Examples of practical relevance and experience are given.
