Objective: To evaluate the effect of feeding acidified milk on the growth and fecal microbial diversity of dairy calves. Methods: Twenty healthy 3-day-old female Holstein calves with similar body weights were selected and randomly divided into two groups. One group was fed pasteurized milk (PM, Control), while the other was fed acidified milk (AM) ad libitum until weaned (day 60). The experiment lasted until day 180. Results: There was no difference in the nutritional components between PM and AM. The numbers of Escherichia coli and total bacteria in AM were lower than in PM. At 31 to 40 and 41 to 50 days of age, the milk intake of calves fed AM was higher than that of calves fed PM (p<0.05), and the solid feed intake of calves fed AM was higher than that of calves fed PM at 61 to 90 days (p<0.05). The average daily gain of calves fed AM was also higher than that of calves fed PM at 31 to 60, 61 to 180, and 7 to 180 days (p<0.05). The calves fed AM tended to have a lower diarrhea rate than those fed PM (p = 0.059). Bacteroides had the highest abundance in the feces of calves fed AM on day 50, while Ruminococcaceae_UCG_005 had the highest abundance in the feces of calves fed AM on day 90 and calves fed PM on days 50 and 90. At the taxonomic level, the linear discriminant analysis scores of 27 microorganisms in the feces of calves fed AM and PM on days 50 and 90 were higher than 4.0. Conclusion: Feeding AM increased calf average daily gain and affected fecal bacterial diversity.

The experiment method was to let the patient bend the joint and lay down flat and treat with cold air from 10 cm away from joint line repeating 5 minutes treatment 1 minute rest and 3 minutes treatment. ESR and WBC cold air therapy reported with 5 days gap and each patient has been applied for 3 times. Result: The 5th day and 10th days ESR and WBC value shows when using cold air therapy, there was a reduction on rejected group but didn't last long, but 15th day it showed only on WBC it had its attention. Conclusions: So the cold air therapy shows it has positive effects on inflammation relief of rheumatoid arthritis patient.
BACKGROUND: Kale (Brassica oleracea) biosynthesizes various phytochemicals including glucosinolates, flavonoids, and carotenoids. Phytochemicals of plants are influenced by light, temperature, carbon dioxide, and growing conditions. Specifically, carotenoids are affected by temperature, light, and oxygen. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cold stress (day/night: $25^{\circ}C/20^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C/15^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C/10^{\circ}C$) on carotenoids in kale leaves. METHODS AND RESULTS: Kale was grown in pots for up to 50 days after sowing (DAS) in a greenhouse. For cold acclimation experiments, kale grown in growth chambers for 3 days and was subjected to low temperature for 4 days. The conditions maintained in the growth chambers were as follows: photoperiod, 12/12 h (day/night); light, fluorescent; and relative humidity, 60%. Carotenoid (lutein, ${\alpha}-carotene$, zeaxanthin, ${\beta}-carotene$) contents were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The total carotenoid content gradually increased during cold acclimation for 3 days. When kale was subjected to cold stress, the total carotenoid content was high at $25^{\circ}C/20^{\circ}C$ treatment, but low at $15^{\circ}C/10^{\circ}C$ treatment. The total carotenoid content of kale leaves continuously grown in greenhouse decreased from 50 to 57 DAS (1,418 and 1,160 mgkg-1 dry wt., respectively). The lutein, ${\alpha}-carotene$, and ${\beta}-carotene$ contents were very low and the zeaxanthin contents were very high at $15^{\circ}C/10^{\circ}C$ treatment. When kale was subjected to cold stress, the ratio of individual to the total carotenoid contents of kale leaves was 4553% for -carotene and 210% for zeaxanthin. CONCLUSION: The ${\beta}-carotene$ and zeaxanthin contents in kale leaves indicate their sensitiveness toward cold stress.

Traditionally, mistletoes have been used as immunostimulant for the management of certain diseases such as cancer with high profile immune depleting potentials. In order to examine the safety of the 20 kGy irradiated cold water extract powder of mistletoes, we performed a 90-day repeated-dose toxicity study with ICR mice. The mice were treated with daily doses of the 20 kGy irradiated cold water extract powder of mistletoes by gavage at 0, 20, 100, and 500 mg/kg/day for 90 consecutive days. We recorded clinical signs of toxicity, body weight, organ weights, histological changes in target organs, hematology, and clinical blood chemistry analysis data for all mice. There were no significant changes in body and organ weights during the experimental period. The hematological analysis and clinical blood chemistry data revealed no toxic effects from the 20 kGy irradiated cold water extract powder of mistletoes. Pathologically, neither gross abnormalities nor histopathological changes were observed between the control and treated mice of both sexes. Collectively, these data suggest that the 20 kGy irradiated cold water extract powder of mistletoes have a high margin of safety.
Generally, the major causative factor of halitosis is thought to be a sulfated compounds. Clusterin, a sulfated glycoprotein-2(SGP-2), composed of two disulfide linked subunits. It is conceivable that clusterin might be one of candidated causing halitosis. We assume that clusterin found in the salivary glands under stress conditions might examine clusterin in the salivary glands under stress conditions. For this study, 24 rats were divided into 2 group : 1)18 rats of group I were bathed in cold water for 30 seconds twice a day 2) 6 rats of group II were selected as a control. The animals were sacrified at day 0,3,5,7,10, and 14 of the experiment and the submandibular glands and parotid glands were removed. RNAs were purified from the salivary glands and the transcription of clusterin in the glands was measured by Northern blot analysis. The specimens of the salivary glands were subjected to Hematoxillin-Eosin and PAS stainings and examined under the light microscope. The findings were as follows : 1. In group I, clusterin was expressed remarkably in the submandibular glands at day 5 but in the parotid glands remarkably at day 3 day slightly at day 7. 2. No significant histologic change was found in the salivary glands except that acini were slightly apart from each other under the cold stress condition.
It is well known that the starting characteristics of the cold cathode type discharge tube have photoelectric effects by the incident light from outside. After making the cold cathode type discharge tubes to be avaiable for popularizing, the present paper was devoted primaliry to a study of relations between the starting characterstics and photoelectric effects of discharge tube under the oight circumstances of day light, incandescent lamp, flouresent lamp, and mercury lamp we used frequently. The result of this investigation show that the photoelectric effects by flourescent lamp emitting short wave length having close ralation to the photoelectric effects is greater than incandescent lamp or day light, and also mercury lamp emitting shorter wave length than flourescent lamp indicates the greatest photoelectric effects.

Socheongryong-tang(SCRT) is widely used to treat the common cold. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of SCRT on Punghan type(風寒型) and Pungyeol type(風熱型) common cold. 98 registered students with commom colds of recent onset were randomized to the double blind, placebo-controlled study. SCRT extract in capsule, $5.4g(1.8g{\times}3cap)$, orally dissolved 3 times a day. The severity of illness was assessed by the physician, using a 5-point scale on start and finish. In Pungyeol type common cold, no statistically significant differences were detected between the SCRT and placebo groups for any of the measured outcomes. In Punghan type common cold, SCRT significantly reduced rhinorrhea (p=0.034) and nasal stuffiness (p=0.048) compared with placebo. This study shows that SCRT is effective in treating cold symptoms in Punghan type common cold. If patients with cold are able to be administered SCRT according to common cold type, the benefit would be expected to increase.

Cold stress is one of the most influenced factors to rice yield. In order to identify genes related to cold stress in fertility stage, genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted. Cultivated 129 rice germplasm were moved in the growth chamber under the condition of $12^{\circ}C/RH70%$(12h day/12h night when the rice plant was grown in 10 DBH(days before heading). Also, rice plant as control was moved in the green house under condition of $28^{\circ}C/RH70%$(12h day/12h night). After 4 days the plants were moved in a greenhouse. The fertility of rice plant were monitored after the grain were fully grown. The most tolerant rice germplasm to cold stress were Cheongdo-Hwayang-12 and IR38 as 63.1 and 61.8 of fertility and the most recessive rice germplasm were Danyang38 and 8 rice germplasm as 0. As a result of GWAS with re-sequencing data and fertility after cold treatment germplasm using genome association and prediction integrated tool (GAPIT), 99 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were observed by applying a significance threshold of -logP>4.5 determined by QQ plot. With SNPs region, 14 candidate genes responded to cold stress in fertility stage were identified.

A 21-year-old healthy Korean man worked on a building construction site every day for almost 2 months and exercised every day for 1 or 2 hours after working hard. He felt dizziness, nausea, and experienced vomiting and body aches immediately after exercise and immediately took cold medicines including acetaminophen, cimetidine, bepotastine, and Codenal? complex for the common cold symptoms for 2 days because he was scheduled to participate in navy training at that time. He complained of severe trapezius pain and aches in his left calf 3 days after joining the Navy training. Testing revealed creatine phosphokinase (CPK) 6260 U/L, myogloblin 176 mcg/L in the urine, liver enzymes increased, and oliguria, suggesting rhabdomyolysis. He recovered with intravenous fluids without any complications.
The purpose of this study is to maintain high efficiency and reasonable use of cold-heat storage systems operated the showcase. An experimental study is carried out to manufacture the showcase system in a laboratory. Comparing the result at general operation condition with that at the new condition using ice storage system, this study showed the effects of the refrigerant sub-cooling, and with using inverter. At the condition using ice storage system, the ice making process was operated during midnight being not needed the cooling of the showcase through the continuous running of the condenser unit. And then, the refrigerant was sub-cooled using stored cold-heat after being discharged from the air cooling condenser during the day time. The cooling performance was increased owing to the sub-cooling of refrigerant during day time, hence the running time of the compressor was effectively decreased. In other words, this study showed that power consumption during daytime can be transferred to the midnight for making use of the refrigerant sub-cooling.
