LCD Backlight용 외부전극 형광램프의 발광특성 (Luminescent Characteristics of External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp(EEFL) for LCD Backlight Applications)

  • LCD backlight용 형광램프(fluorescent lamp, FL)의 전극구조에 따른 발광특성을 평가하였다. 동일한 조건에서 제작된 cold cathode fluorescent lamp(CCFL) 및 EEFL에 대하여 인가전압과 EEFL의 전극 폭에 따른 휘도와 발광효율을 측정, 평가하였다. 12 V에서 측정된 CCFL의 휘도와 발광효율은 각각 27600 cd/㎡ 및 35.3 lm/w를 나타내었다 EEFL의 휘도는 전극면적을 증가시킬수록 증가되었고, 발광효율은 전극 면적이 증가되면서 증가되었다가 전극 폭 20 mm에서 최대값을 나타낸 다음 다시 감소하였다. 20 mm의 전극 폭을 갖는 EEFL에 대하여 12 V와 14 V에서 측정된 휘도와 발광효율은 각각 21600 cd/㎡, 26500 cd/㎡ 및 35.6 lm/w, 34.8 lm/w였다.

  • An External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp (EEFL) has longer lifespan, higher power efficiency and higher luminance than a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL). Moreover, it is easy to drive them in parallel. Therefore, the EEFL is expected to quickly replace the CCFL in LCD backlight systems. However, the EEFL has more complex characteristics than the CCFL with a resistive component, because it has both a resistive component by plasma and a capacitive component by external electrode. In this paper, values of resistance and capacitance are measured at several power levels and at several operating frequencies. They are expressed by a numeral formula based on a linear approximation that represents the equivalent resistance and capacitance as a function of power. Then we made block diagram of the equivalent circuit model using numerical expressions. Simulation waveforms and experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility of the equivalent model.

  • CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) are used to backlight of LCD(Liquid Crystal Display). This paper presents analysis of half-bridge type resonant inverter of CCFL drive in order to stable characteristics, and fluorescent lamp operation frequency is higher than resonant frequency for safe operation. Besides, The Piezoelectric ceramic transformer (PZT) is electro-mechanical device that transfers electrical energy through a mechanical vibration. The modified equivalent circuit model of the PZT considering the operating current level is derived to design the CCFL. The validity of this study was confirmed from the simulation and experiential result.

  • The LCD TV has many variable functions for consumer. Low temperature driving below minus 20 degree is also one of key functions. Since LCD is not self-luminance device, it is needed backlight system. Recently EEFL(External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp) widely substitutes for CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp). It is more cheaper, higher efficiency, and easy to drive parallel connection compared to CCFL. In this paper, several conditions for low temperature driving of EEFL are investigated and a new boost-half bridge inverter for low temperature driving is proposed. Mode analysis is described and experimental results is represented to verify validity of the proposed inverter.

  • The 17" Backlight Unit (BLU) employing twelve EEFLs (External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp) has been developed for LCD-TV The characteristics of the EEFL BLU without dual brightness enhancement film (DBEF) were equivalent to those of CCFL (Cold cathode Fluorescent Lamp) BLU employing eight CCFLs with DBEF. Luminance, power consumption and uniformity were 12,000nits, 32watt and 80%, respectively. The inverter of EEFL Backlight Unit is composed of 2 transformers and driven by the sinusoidal waveform.

  • 기존의 LCD-TV의 백라이트 모듈로 사용되는 CCFL(Cold Cathode fluorescent Lamp:냉 음극형 형광램프)을 구동 하는 인버터 회로는 3단으로 구성되어 전체 시스템의 효율저하 문제가 발생한다. 본 논문에서 제안된 회로는 DC/DC단을 사용하지 않아 전체 시스템의 효율을 향상 시킬 수 있다. 역률 개선을 위한 PFC(Power Factor Corrector)단의 출력 전압을 인버터의 입력전압으로 사용하여 CCFL을 구동한다. 인버터에서는 4-in-1트랜스포머를 사용하여 CCFL간의 전류평형 및 동시점등을 이룰 수 있으며, 전류평형을 위한 부가회로가 불필요하다. 인버터 시스템을 2단으로 구성하여 회로구성이 간소화되고 회로의 부피 및 제작 원가를 저감 할 수 있다. 제안된 기준에 따라 설계한 인버터를 40인치 LCD-TV용 백라이트 모듈에 적용한 실험결과를 통해 유용성을 검증한다.

  • 최근의 TV용 TFT-LCD에서는 동화상에서의 잔상발생을 줄이는 것이 중요한 기술적 요구사항이 되었다. Single-LVDS 신호체계에서 3D를 대응하기 위한 Quad Signal Package 까지 진화하면서 보다 빠른 신호를 정해진 시간안에 처리해야 하는 문제가 발생하고 있으며, 이러한 특성을 구현하기 위해서 잔상효과가 없는 Backlight에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 점멸방식의 Backlight 를 사용하여, 1Frame의 시간안에 이 동작이 가능하게 구현하는 것을 목표로 삼았으며, 광원으로는 기존의 냉음극관램프를 사용하였다. 통상 냉음극관램프는 주 발광파장대를 담당하는 녹색의 잔광시간이 길어서 위와 같은 특성을 구현하기에 어려움이 있었으나, 본 연구에서는 단잔광 특성을 가지는 녹색 및 적색 형광체를 적용한 냉음극관램프를 적용하여, 1Video Frame의 시간안에 점멸동작이 가능한 백라이트를 제작하였으며, 이를 사용하여, 동화상에서 비약적인 잔상 해결 효과를 확인할 수 있었다.

  • A LCD backlight inverter control IC based on the piezoelectric transformer (PZT) for Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) lighting is proposed. It is indeed a variable frequency, variable duty (VFVD) controller having dual feedback control loops for achieving both the regulation of lamp current and the maximum efficiency. The PWM controller regulates the lamp current, while the PLL controller tunes the operating frequency to the frequency that the efficiency of the combined LC-PZT resonator becomes maximum. The mixed PLL/PWM control technique lets the backlight inverter operate at the maximum efficiency in spite of the variation of component and environment. The controller features include a protection for an open or broken lamps, and an open lamp regulation.

  • The Cold cathode fluorescent lamp(CCFL) are used to illuminate the liquid crystal display(LCD). Ballasts are required for CCFL because the lamp need high starting voltage and behave negative dynamic resistant characteristics in the desired region of operation. In this paper, the lamp impedance model is proposed, and this model is established from some equations and measured electrical characteristics of CCFL. The validity of porposed lamp model is verified from the simulation and experimental results.

  • A Highly efficient Mercury-free Flat Fluorescent Lamp (MFFL) with dielectric barrier Xe gas discharge was developed for an alternative of conventional line-type Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs) which shows a wide voltage margin and a stable discharge operation for diffuse glow discharge with an application of a auxiliary electrode. Electro-optic characteristics of the MFFL were examined through the changes in ambient temperature, total pressure and Xe partial pressure. the single cell is expanded into a multi-structured configuration to realize a large sized lamp by a simple repetition of the single cells, and a new driving scheme is proposed for an adaptive brightness control using dual auxiliary electrodes and bi-polar drive scheme. In addition, interesting application of this ultra high luminance flat lamp by the optimization of the gas condition and the pattern of the rear phosphor layer is suggested as a good alternative of daylight lamp source
