  • This paper describes a design study of heat exchanger assembly to be used for low NOx condensing gas boiler. In this study, specifications of each heat exchanger components(upper and lower fin-type HEX, coil-type HEX, baffle) were investigated experimently by using model apparatus and analytical model, and comprehensive performances of the pilot gas boiler were examined. As a result, the boiler efficiency for heating and hot-water reached 90% and 94%, respectively. NOx and CO emission are less than 50ppm and 200ppm (0$_2$0% basis), respectively, which are very improved results than those of conventional bunsen-type boiler. But it is considered that supplementary investigations necessary for CO emission improvement and optimum design with boiler capacity.

  • This paper proposes a design optimization approach for core of solenoid actuators by combining optimization techniques with the finite element method (FEM). A solenoid is an important element part which hydraulically controls a transmission system, etc. The demanded feature of the solenoid is that it performs an electromagnetic force output being constant regardless of the stroke and being proportional to coil current. The plunger compresses a spring with a minimum force of 12 N over an 1.7 mm travel. The orthogonal array, analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques and response surface optimization, are employed to determine the main effects and their optimal design variables. The methodology is demonstrated as a optimization tool for the core design of a solenoid actuator.

  • Rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) coated conductor (CC) tapes have already been commercialized but still possess some issues in terms of manufacturing cost, anisotropic in-field performance, $I_c$ response to mechanical loads such as delamination, homogeneity of current transport property, and production length. Development on improving its performance properties to meet the needs in practical device applications is underway and simplification of the tape's architecture and manufacturing process are also being considered to enhance the performance-cost ratio. As compared to low temperature superconductors (LTS), high temperature superconductor (HTS) REBCO CC tapes provide a much wider range of operating temperature and a higher critical current density at 4.2 K making it more attractive in magnet and coil applications. The superior properties of the REBCO CC tapes under magnetic field have led to the development of superconducting magnets capable of producing field way above 23.5 T. In order to achieve its optimum performance, the electromechanical properties under different deformation modes and magnetic field should be evaluated for practical device design. This paper gives an overview of the effects of mechanical stress/strain on $I_c$ in HTS CC tapes due to uniaxial tension, bending deformation, transverse load, and including the electrical performance of a CC tape joint which were performed by our group at ANU in the last decade.

  • In multi-GHz RF ICs and high-speed digital interfaces, ESD protection devices introduce considerable parasitic capacitance and resistance to inputs and outputs, thereby degrading the RF performance, such as input/output matching, gain, and noise figure. In this paper, the impact of ESD protection devices on the performance of RF ICs is investigated and design methodologies to minimize this impact are discussed. With RF and ESD test results, the 'RF/ESD co-design' method is discussed and compared to the conventional RF ESD protection method which focuses on minimizing the device size.

  • The almost pole transformers are constructed with tank, cover, clamp etc., that contains the insulation oil, core, coil, terminals, bus and the other accessories. If some fault current will be flown by some trouble or accident, interior pressure of the transformer shall be very quickly rise, and mechanical components or insulation oil from the transformer enclosure shall be propelled or dropped from the tank. For the prevention of the above accident, recently the pole transformers should be done 'the Design Tests for Fault Current Capability' according to ANSI C57.12.20(1997) There are two tests method in this standard, Test Number I with a high current arcing fault, without internal fusible elements, shall be conducted on rack enclosure with its minimum designed air space. Test Number II with an internal fusible element, shall be conducted on each enclosure diameter utilizing the internal fusible elements. KEPCO recently request to be done the 'Design Tests for Fault Current Capability' for pole transformers according to KEPCO's standard ES141-$533{\sim}545$, PS141-$482{\sim}518$ and RS141-$611{\sim}628$ that is same with Test Number I of ANSI C57.12.20.

  • The injection molding analysis of VCM (Voice Coil Motor) housing for smart phone cameras were performed. We conducted the analysis in terms of injection molding pressure, the formation of weld lines, flow marks, and flow patterns. The goal of the analysis was targeted for the prediction of the optimal gate locations. Because the quality of VCM housing is strongly dependent on the precise control of the camera lens by its nature, we focused on the lens guiding lanes in the VCM housing. We first calculated the maximum injection molding pressure in terms of the filled volumes. The injection molding pressure were calculated within 146MPa at about 90% volume filled. We also investigated the possibility of the occurrence of design-related defects such flow marks, weld lines. Filling patterns regarding the design of the gate locations were delineated to find the weld lines. Throughout the simulations, the final deformations of the lens guiding lanes for the VCM housing were calculated. The deformations distribute ranging from $0.5{\mu}m$ to $2.50{\mu}m$, which were used to find the optimal design of the gates.

  • The optical disc drive has used a high NA objective lens and a shorter wavelength laser diode for high recording density. But high NA and shorter wavelength cause several margins to become short. Focusing and tracking servo has to be more accurate and active tilt compensation mechanism is also needed for coma aberration compensation. In this paper, we proposed 3-axis moving magnet type actuator. For 3-DOF motion, moving coil actuator has to be equipped with 6 wires for supplying 3 independent signals. However, moving magnet type actuator doesn't need to change the configuration of wires because coils are in stator. So, we added a tilt mechanism to the 2-axis moving magnet actuator which is designed in previous research. Addition of the tilt mechanism cuts down the focus sensitivity. So, maximization the tilting sensitivity and securing the focusing sensitivity are objectivities of this research. DOE (design of experiments) procedures of electromagnetic circuit are performed for parameter study and the optimization is also performed to maximize the tilt sensitivity. And then the final design is suggested and its performance is verified by FE simulation.

  • The practical application of REBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes, vital for energy transmission (e.g., cable application) and high-field magnets (e.g., coil application), necessitates efficient and simple quality assessment procedures. This study introduces a systematic approach to assess the electromechanical properties of REBCO CC tapes under 77 K and self-field conditions. The approach involves customized tensile and bending tests that clarify the critical current (Ic) response of the CC tapes under mechanical loads induced by tension and bending. This study measures the retained Ic values of commercially available GdBCO CC tapes under 250 MPa tensile stress and 40 mm bending diameter. Through experimentation, the study demonstrates the resilience of these tapes and their suitability for applications. By presenting a simplified stress-based analysis and a bending test of the tapes, the study contributes to effective quality assessment methods for the development of practical superconducting products.

  • A promising alternative technology is the potential use of ice slurries as a secondary refrigerant in conventional cooling process. Ice slurries behave almost like a liquid and can be pumped through pipes although the energy capacity of ice slurries per unit volume is considerably higher than that for chilled water or brine due to the latent heat capacity of the ice particles. To give the basic data for the design of cooling systems using ice slurries, experimental study has been conducted to find out the performance of the cooling coil of show-case with ice slurries. Despite the fact that ice slurries entering the cooling coil had at least $5^{\circ}C$ higher temperature than that of R22, it was still capable of providing a similar cooling performance than that obtained with R22.

  • In this paper, we propose a transformer of alternating voltage source utilizing a semiconductor, operating in bidirectional fashion. Transformer is a device transferring energy by inductive coupling between its winding circuits. Conventional transformer is a device, composed of a primary coil and a secondary coil, transforming an alternating voltage. The system we propose is designed with a single circuit transforming the level of voltage signal in two ways; from the source to the load, and vice versa. For semiconductor switches, the NPN transistor is connected to the alternating voltage source terminal, and emitter terminal is connected to the inductor in the system as an energy storage element. The control signal is applied to the base terminal of the semiconductors. We have shown that the system we propose, by adopting only one circuit, drives an alternating voltage transformer that changes the amplitudes of voltage signal in reciprocal way.
