This study investigated the effect of learning achievements and cognitive load according to different types of presenting learning materials and epistemological beliefs (EB). Learning achievements in this study were composed by retention and transfer of ill-structured problem. A total of 80 college students participated in the study. Prior to the learning, students were guided to fill out a questionnaire regarding epistemological beliefs and a prior knowledge test. The students of each group studied with a different type of reading material: full text (FT), full text including key questions (KeyFT) and full text including a concept map (CmFT). After a session of study was finished, they were asked to complete the posttest: retention and transfer. The results showed that there was a significant difference in transfer achievements. CmFT outperformed higher scores than the other types. There was no significant difference in retention among the groups. It is strongly believed that the types of presenting learning materials may have affected the understanding of ill-structured problem solving skills. Students with sophisticated EB showed higher achievements on retention and transfer than naive-EB and mixed-EB. Even though the data showed decrease of the cognitive load on the type of materials and EB, there were no significant differences on the cognitive load. We should consider a positive effect of types of presenting learning materials and EB enhancing capabilities of solving ill-structured problems in real life.

With the rapid growth of the Web technologies, the Web has changed teaching and learning as well as our life in various ways. Web-based instruction (WBI) supports self-directed and creative learning at anytime anywhere. However, learners may experience the problems of disorientation and cognitive overload when the hyperspace that consists of learning materials is complex. In this paper, we present a Web-based adaptive hypermedia system based on cognitive load theory which can reduce cognitive loads that novices may experience when they learn programming
The study investigated the effects of types of presentation and cognitive load on multimedia learning. In experiment 1, subject were 90 elementary school students. The subject were assigned in three conditions: Narration and Text (NT) condition, Animation and Narration(AN) condition, Animation and Text(AT) condition. The result showed that AN condition improved the learning performances in comparison with AT condition, NT condition. Experiment 2 was administrated to 87 undergraduate students. They were participated in three conditions, also. The conditions were Animation and Text (AT) condition, Animation and Narration (AN) condition, Animation, Narration and Text (ANT) condition. the results showed that AN condition was greater in AT, ANT condition. The results from a series of these experiments imply that varying the types of presentation of identical learning materials had influences on the performances. Multimedia presentation(animation and verbal conditions) improved the learning performances in comparison with monomedia presentation(verbal condition), and the advantage was raised when learners were provided the learning material in the multimodal and multimedia environment(AN condition). Also, it came out that redundant text identical to narration disrupted learning when learners were in the picture (either animation or illustration) and narration conditions. Likewise, also for adults, performances were improved in the multimodal conditions and redundant text identical to narration was not helpful for learning. These results are evidences for the dual-coding theory and the cognitive load theory.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of prior-knowledge level and supportive information types in web-based learning using 4C/ID model(Four-Components Instructional Design model) on cognitive load and schema acquisition. To achieve the purpose, this study applied a web based learning. 166 university students participated in web-based learning for 4 weeks. After web-based learning, they checked self report for cognitive load and made concept map for schema acquisition and the datum from them were used for 2 ways ANOVA. According to the findings, groups in prior-knowledge level invested significantly differences on cognitive load and a question group in case of supportive information types didn't invested significant differences on cognitive load with statement group. Second, groups in prior-knowledge level invested significantly differences on schema acquisition and a question group in case of supportive information types invested significantly higher schema acquisition than a statement group. Furthermore, it happened interaction effect between supportive information types and prior-knowledge level on schema acquisition. This research has several implications with regard to suggesting the guidelines and conditions for the authentic task of the novice.
Three experiments compared two hypotheses on visual selection; perceptual load hypothesis and dilution hypothesis. The perceptual load hypothesis predicts that perceptual load of task-relevant processing determines the level of task-irrelevant processing whereas the dilution hypothesis predicts that competition for limited-capacity attentional resource, not perceptual load, determines the locus of selection. To compare the two hypotheses, we investigated the influence of perceptual load in visual search on response interference by a distractor. Experiment 1 and 2 manipulated perceptual load by the set size of a search array and the colors of a target and non-targets, respectively. As a result, distractor interference decreased with a set size regardless of perceptual load. In order to further test the set size effect, Experiment 3 manipulated the perceptual categories of non-targets and a distractor. The results showed that distractor interference decreased only when non-targets belonged to the same category as a distractor. Overall, the current findings support the dilution hypothesis, but not the perceptual load hypothesis, and provide the evidence that visual selection is constrained by capacity-limited, category-specific attentional resources.
The similarity of shape of shape of interface between human cognitive map and real product is the important factor to determine the human performance. Nevertheless, the degree of similarity between these has not been defined quantitatively in recent studies. Therefore, in this study, the cognitive map and the mental workload were measured by SMM(Sketch Map Method) and RNASA-TLX(Revision of NASA-Task Load Index). And the numerical expression of the accuracy point was suggested for the quantitative calculation of relative positional similarity between cognitive map and real product. In the experiment, nine subjects were participated and two kinds of vehicles were used. Mental workload was mental workload was measured immediately after the road test. The result of analysis on the relationship between accuracy and mental workload shows that the negative correlation exists on each vehicle, and the lower score of mental workloads id measured on the vehicle that has the higher score of accuracy between two vehicles.

The spectrum efficiency of mobile communication networks can be improved dramatically adopting multiple antennas technologies. In order to guarantee the licensed rights of primary user (PU), the cognitive radio system should perform in a relatively low interference manner when it gets access to the spectrum of licensed networks. In this paper, we explore a uniformly distributed circular antenna array to implement beamforming algorithm that is accomplished by optimization method at the base station of cognitive radio networks, and therefore we can suppress the interference to PU by steering quite low transmission power toward PU and constructing a narrow beam toward cognitive user (CU). By reducing the constraint number of the optimization problem, we also propose a null steering algorithm that steers rather low radiation power toward PU, while the other areas in the same cell are covered by radiation power except the local area around PU. It is pursued to reduce the computation load and enlarge the capacity of cognitive radio networks extremely. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms process superior performance.
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to conduct a monitoring study on the learning process of e-learning contents. This study has two research objectives. First, by conducting monitoring research on the learning process, we aim to explore the implications for content development that reflects future student needs. Second, we want to collect empirical basic data on the estimation of appropriate amount of learning. Research design, data, and methodology - This study is a case study of learner's learning process in e-learning. After completion of the study, an in-depth interview was made after conducting a test to measure the total amount of cognitive load and the level of engagement that occurred during the learning process. The tool used to measure cognitive load is NASA-TLX, a subjective cognitive load measurement method. In the monitoring process, we observe external phenomena such as page movement and mouse movement path, and identify cognitive activities such as Think-Aloud technique. Results - In the total of three research subjects, the two courses showed excess learning time compared to the learning time, and one course showed less learning time than the learning time. This gives the following implications for content development. First, it is necessary to consider the importance of selecting the target and contents level according to the level of the subject. Second, it is necessary to design the learner participation activity that meets the learning goal level and to calculate the appropriate time accordingly. Third, it is necessary to design appropriate learning support strategy according to the learning task. This should be considered in designing lessons. Fourth, it is necessary to revitalize contents design centered on learning activities such as simulation. Conclusions - The implications of the examination system are as follows. First, it can be confirmed that there is difficulty in calculating the amount of learning centered on learning time and securing objective objectivity. Second, it can be seen that there are various variables affecting the actual learning time in addition to the content amount. Third, there is a need for reviewing the system of examination of learning amount centered on 'learning time'.

The purpose of this research was to identify expertise in ait traffic control by using cognitive skill analysis for novices and experts in routine and non-routine situations. The result of study was to understand expertise in air traffic control tasks in terms of what cognitive processes are responsible for the expert's high performance levels. The problem solving task was difficult for novices, but performed relatively automatically by experts in a routine situation. The difficulty could indicate the presence of controlled processing. Rather than rules and strategies, novices focused more on environmental factors, which merely increase cognitive load. In a non-routine situation, novices showed that they did not categorize the information consistently and alternative resources were not available for them. Experts, however, performed automatically a task by arranging and organizing information related to problem solving components in contexts without regard to a routine and non-routine situation. Especially experts developed a stable representation and directed alternative resources for air traffic flow and efficiency. Based on the results, cognitive processes of experts could be useful to understand expert performance and analyze the learning process, which imply the necessity of developing expertise systematically.
With external air pollution forcing many people indoors, new methods of facilitating healthier indoor life are necessary. This study, therefore, investigates the effects of indoor oxygen concentration and respiration methods on biosignals and cognitive ability. The study included twenty healthy subjects who inhaled air through a mask from a gas delivery system. All subjects were asked to perform three types of breathing (nasal, oral, and oral breathing with high oxygenation) and respond to cognitive stimuli (rest close eye, rest open eye, 1-back and 2-back working memory tasks). The changes in cognitive load according to respiration were analyzed by measuring response time, accuracy, and biosignals to stimuli. The result showed that, in all three respirations, heart rate significantly increased with the increase in cognitive load. Also, in oral respiration, the airway respiration rate significantly increased according to the increase in cognitive load. The change appeared to compensate for insufficient oxygen supply in oral respiration during cognitive activity. Conversely, there was no significant change in airway respiration rate during oral respiration with a high concentration oxygen supply as in nasal respiration. This result suggests that a high concentration oxygen supply might play a role in compensating for insufficient oxygen concentration or inefficient oxygen inhalation, such as oral respiration. Based on the results of this study, a follow-up study is necessary to determine the impact of changes in the autonomic nervous system, such as stress and emotions, to find out more precise and comprehensive effects of oxygen concentration and breathing type.
