  • The two major theoretical frameworks that have informed research on symbolic play and cognitive development were reviewed. Piaget and Vygotsky had different views of the role of symbolic play in children's development. For Piaget, play is primarily an assimilative activity; that is, in play, children modify reality to fit their existent cognitive schema and desires. In his view, play does not facilitate development, but it is used to consolidate existent concepts. For Vygotsky, play is a precursor to symbolization and is a leading factor in development. Particularly the lack of a sociocultural dimension in Piaget's theory brought about the influence of Vygotsky, for whom this dimension is central. However, the research yielded so far has not fully investigated the wider sociocultural elements that define and inform the play context. This article concludes by suggesting an approach to children's play that is directed by a proper estimation of the interaction between its cognitive, emotional, and sociocultural dimensions.

  • Background: Parkinson's disease is movement disorder due to dopaminergic deficiency. It has been noted that cognitive dysfunction also presented on Parkinson's disease patients. But, it is not clear whether such a cognitive dysfunction was a dopaminergic dysfunction or cholinergic dysfunction. Using linear and non-linear analyses, we analysed the effect of cognitive and motor symptom on EEG change. Methods: EEGs were recorded from patients with Parkinson's disease and essential tremor, and normal controls during rest. We calculated the power spectrum, correlation dimension and Lyapunov exponent by using 'Complexity'program. The power spectrum, correlation dimension, and Lyapunov exponent were compared between Parkinson's disease patients and essential tremor patients. Results: Theta power was increased in Parkinson's disease patient group. Correlation dimension was increased in Parkinson's disease patients. Positive correlation was noted between MMSE and correlation dimension, and negative correlation was noted between MMSE and Lyapunov exponent. Lyapunov exponent was decreased in Parkinson's disease patient. Conclusions: We conclude that the state of Parkinson's disease patient is characterized by increased correlation dimension and decreased Lyapunov exponent.

  • This study explores children's categories of emotion understanding from facial expressions onto two dimensional structure of emotion. Children of 89 from 3 to 5 years old were required to those facial expressions related the fourteen emotion terms. Facial expressions applied for experiment are used the photographs rated the degree of expression in each of the two dimensions (pleasure-displeasure dimension and arousal-sleep dimension) on a nine-point scale from 54 university students. The experimental results showed that children indicated the greater stability in arousal dimension than stability in pleasure-displeasure dimension. Emotions about sadness, sleepiness, anger and surprise onto two dimensions was understand very well, but emotions about fear, boredom were showed instability in pleasure-displeasure dimension. Specifically, 3 years old children indicated highly the perception in a degree of arousal-sleep than perception of pleasure-displeasure.

  • Background : Spatial analysis of EEG is a phenomenal assessment and not so informative for phase space and dynamic aspect of EEG data. In contrast, nonlinear EEG analysis attempts to characterize the dynamics of neural networks in the brain. We have analyzed the features of EEG nonlinearly in subjects with white matter change on brain MRI and compared the results with cognitive function in each. Methods : Digital EEG data were taken for 30 seconds in 9 subjects with white matter degeneration and in 5 healthy normal controls without white matter change on MRI. Then we analyzed them nonlinearly to calculate the correlation dimension(D2) using the MATLAB software. The cognitive function was assessed by 3MS(modified mini-mental state examination). The severity of white matter change was assessed by Scheltens scale. Results : The mean D2 value of normal control was greater than that of white matter degeneration group. The D2s of some channels were correlative with 3MS and degree of white matter degeneration significantly. Conclusions : nonlinear analysis of EEG can be used as one of adjuvant functional studies for prediction of cognitive impairment in subjects with white matter degeneration and subcortical white matter change can be influential on cognitive function and correlation dimension of EEG.

  • This study identified cognitive styles of online searchers in terms of Field Dependence (FD) and Field Independence (FI) dimension and determined whether searching performance was affected by FD / FI cognitive differences between online searchers and the extent to which searching performance was affected by the FD / FI dimension of cognitive style. This study used a quasi experimental design with 41 student subjects using the Lockheed DIALOG system and ERIC ONT AP database. Cognitive styles of student subjects were measured by using GEFT (Group Embedded Figure Test) and the subjects were divided into two cognitive groups- FD and FI based on the GEFT scores. Each subject was assigned two predetermined searches which had different search goals-a 'high precision search' and a 'high recall search.' Search performance of the two cognitive groups on the two problems was compared in order to see how these two groups responded to achieving different search goals in terms of search strategy, search inputs, and resulting search outputs. The major findings of this study were: 1. The pattern of approaching a search problem regardless of whether it was a high precision search or a high recall search was not significantly different between the two cognitive groups. 2. The FI group tended to use significantly more terms for the high recall search than the FD group but slightly less time than the FD group. However, significant differences in connect time between the two groups were not revealed. 3. For both search problems the FI group achieved a significantly higher success rate than the FD group. The FI group were significantly more successful searchers than the FD group. As for unit / cost, although the FI group were more cost effective than those of the FD group for both searches, these differences were too small to be statistically significant. 4. Mean differences of the search performance variables between the FD / FI groups were consistent across the two types of search questions. The FI group seemed to be equally effective for both types of search questions. In conclusion, the differences found in number of terms used and success rate between the two cognitive groups apparently resulted from different cognitive styles.

  • In order to investigate the composition and characteristics of instructional objectives in a teaching-learning material for gifted elementary students in science, 217 instructional objectives across 13 themes in 4 areas of 'energy','materials', 'life' and 'earth' were analyzed by Bloom's revised taxonomy of educational objectives. Four types of factual, conceptual, procedural and meta-cognitive knowledge in knowledge dimension were all comprised in the objectives. Conceptual knowledge was primary constituent of the objectives and the proportion of factual knowledge was the least. On the other hand, all 6 categories of 'remember', 'understand', 'apply', 'analyze', 'evaluate' and 'create' in cognitive process dimension were also comprised in the objectives. The category of 'understand' was primary constituent and that of 'remember' was the least one. While conceptual knowledge in knowledge dimension was primary constituent of the objectives in 'energy', 'materials' and 'earth' areas, procedural knowledge was the most objectives in 'life' area. The least type of knowledge was factual knowledge in all 4 areas. In cognitive process dimension, the category of 'understand' was primary constituent and that of 'remember' was the least one in all 4 areas. In conclusion, it was showed that the instructional objectives in the teaching-learning material reflected the characteristics of educational objectives for gifted students in science.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the role performance and self-confidence of the fathers with children in grade school. Further, this study explored the variables that affect positively the self-confidence of the fathers. A survey questionnaire was used for this study. The participants of this study were 340 fathers with children aged between seven and nine residing in Gyeongsangnam-do. As for the performance of father's roles, the average score was higher in 'conversation with children' and 'expressing affection to children', whereas it was lower in 'raising children' and 'educating children'. As for the self-confidence regarding their father's roles, the score was higher in the cognitive dimension than in the emotional dimension. In general, the fathers tended to evaluate their role performance as fathers positively. The variables that affected the cognitive dimension of self-confidence as a father were conversation with children, supporter role, under-standing children, and educating children. The variables that influenced the emotional dimension, on the other hand, were child-rearing role, husband's role, supporter role, and expressing love to children.

  • The purpose of this study is to survey about the images of the sexy clothes that young women sympathize in modern society, that is, to make a research into the cognitive dimensions of 'Sexy image' and the constructive peculiarity of clothing. The researches into dimension of image by sexy clothing make that female mainly consist of in their twenties during May to October in 2003. The independent variables were: 1) The physical beauty dimension, 2) The negative estimate dimension, 3) The characteristic devaluation dimension,4) The elegance/ high grade dimension,5) The freshness/ beauty dimension,6) The sex appeal/ exposure dimension. Judging from each characteristic of costume in classified by articles, that is, colors, texture, shapes, details, and others-phenomenon of outerization of under clothing, print. We can know the clothes showing up our nice figures are the sleeveless design tied with strap, soft texture as silk chiffon and the colors that are not strong. And there were no embarrassed, ugly and pitiful clothing. Expressing sexy beauty by clothing is the result that the wearer produces intentionally by compounding design factors, it's the ideal when the observer's reaction and the wearer's intention correspond. Therefore, it will be helpful in expressing ideally if the subject, what kinds of sexy beauty the compounding design factors express, is studied carefully. Also it is expected to be used in grasping modem consumers' desires that want to look sexy, finding out how to express, dealing with the consumers' desires correctly, and the reference materials of the planning goods, sales promotion, and selecting of a medium of advertisement according to the consumers' desires.
