Electrolyte Addition for Enhanced Wastewater Treatment by Electrolysis using Cu Electrode

  • In this study, the effect of electrolyte addition on the removal of organics and nutrients in electrochemical wastewater using a copper electrode, and the characteristics of the by-product of electrolysis were investigated. The removal of organics increased significantly as shorter reaction times upon the addition of chloride ion, and most of the electrolysis reaction was completed within 20 min. The reaction rate gradually increased in proportion to the $Cl^-$/COD ratio, whereas the highest removed mass of organic matter per mass of added electrolyte was observed at a $Cl^-$/COD ratio of 1. After the addition of electrolyte, significant removal of ammoniacal nitrogen was observed as a result of the enhanced generation of oxidizers such as hypochlorite. Excellent phosphorus removal was also achieved in a very short reaction time (within 2 min) by electro-coagulation. As the electrolysis progressed, the amount of by-product increased gradually, whereas a decrease of sludge volume index was observed after the addition of electrolyte. This indicated that the settling performance of the by-products was better, and their removal would be easily achieved.

Serum proteomics analysis of feline mammary carcinoma based on label-free and PRM techniques

  • Background: Feline mammary carcinoma is the third most common cancer that affects female cats. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to screen differential serum proteins in feline and clarify the relationship between them and the occurrence of feline mammary carcinoma. Methods: Chinese pastoral cats were used as experimental animals. Six serum samples from cats with mammary carcinoma (group T) and six serum samples from healthy cats (group C) were selected. Differential protein analysis was performed using a Label-free technique, while parallel reaction monitoring (PRM) was performed to verify the screened differential proteins. Results: A total of 82 differential proteins were detected between group T and group C, of which 55 proteins were down regulated and 27 proteins were up regulated. Apolipoprotein A-I, Apolipoprotein A-II (ApoA-II), Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), Apolipoprotein C-III (ApoC-III), coagulation factor V, coagulation factor X, C1q, albumen (ALB) were all associated with the occurrence of feline mammary carcinoma. Differential proteins were involved in a total of 40 signaling pathways, among which the metabolic pathways associated with feline mammary carcinoma were the complement and coagulation cascade and cholesterol metabolism. According to the Label-free results, ApoB, ApoC-III, ApoA-II, FN1, an uncharacterized protein, and ALB were selected for PRM target verification. The results were consistent with the trend of the label-free. Conclusions: This experimen is the first to confirm ApoA-II and ApoB maybe new feline mammary carcinoma biomarkers and to analyze their mechanisms in the development of such carcinoma in feline.

분무연소합성(SCS)법에 의한 나노크기 산화아연(ZnO) 콜로이드의 제조 (Fabrication of Nano-sized ZnO Colloids from Spray Combustion Synthesis (SCS))

  • 분무연소합성법을 이용하여 나노 크기의 산화아연(ZnO) 콜로이드를 제조하였다. 연소반응을 위한 산화제로서 $Zn(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$와 환원제(연료)로서 $CH_6N_4O$를 사용하였다. DTA/TGA를 이용하여 열분석을 행한 결과 $230^{\circ}C$에서 전구체 혼합물의 착화(ignition)에 의한 연소반응으로 생각되는 발열피크가 나타났다. 그러나 분무 연소 반응의 경우 ${\mu}m$ 크기의 액적들로 인해 착화를위한 분자 또는 기들의 함량이 상대적으로 적기 때문에 분무된 액적들의 착화를 위해 연소반응기의 온도를 $500^{\circ}C$로 유지하였다. 응집체의 형성을 억제하기 위하여 여과매체를 사용하여 액적의 개수 농도를 감소시켰으며, 에어로졸 입자의 체류시간을 2.5초로 조절하여 열 유체의 흐름을 층류로 유도하였다. 제조된 입자들의 모양은 모두 구형이었으며, 평균 입자 크기는 180nm이었다. XRD와 TEM 분석 결과 각각의 콜로이드들은 ZnO 고유의 결정성을 나타내고 있었으며, hexagonal 구조를 가지는 것으로 확인되었다.

정수처리공정에서 NOM 거동과 소독부산물 발생특성 (Characterization of NOM Behavior and DBPs Formation in Water Treatment Processes)

  • Disinfection by-products(DBPs) are formed through the reaction between chlorine and natural organic matter(NOM) in water treatment. For reducing the formation of chlorinated DBPs in the drinking water treatment, there is a need to evaluate the behavior of NOM fractions and the occurrence of DBPs for each fraction. Among the six fractions of NOM, the removal of HPOA and HPIN got accomplished through coagulation and sedimentation processes. Advanced water treatment processes were found to be most significant to remove the HPOA and HPON. It was found that HPOA made the most THMFP level than any other fractions and HPIA and HPOA formed higher HAAFP. The fraction of NOM with MW less than 1k Da was 32.5~54.3% in intake raw water. Mostly the organic matter with MW more than 1k Da was removed through coagulation and sedimentation in the drinking water treatment processes. In case of advanced water treatment processes, the organic matter with MW 1k~100k Da decreased by means of ozone oxidation for high molecular weight substances. As the result low molecular organic matter increased. In the BAC and GAC processes, the organic matter with MW less than 100k Da decreased.

  • Properties of nanoparticles synthesized during gas phase reaction were studied in terms of particle behaviors using real-time particle characterization method. For this study, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized in the chemical vapor condensation process(CVC) and their in-situ measurement of particle formation and particle size distribution was performed by scanning mobility particle sizer(SMPS). As a result, particle behaviors in the CVC reactor were affected by both of number concentration and thermal coagulation, simultaneously. Particularly, growth and agglomeration between nanoparticles followed two different ways of dominances from coagulations by increase of number concentration and sintering effect by increased temperature.

중금속폐수에서 구리의 전기화학적 침전처리 (Electrochemical Precipitation Treatment of Copper from an Heavymetal Wastewater)

  • This research was conducted in the laboratory to investigate an alternative of Copper(Cu) removal from an heavymetal wastewater using the electrochemical precipitation(ECP) process. The ECP unit consisted of an electrolytic cell made of Titanium plate and Steel plate representing anode and cathode. The DC power source applied to the ECP unit had electrical potential(E) of 50$\pm$ 1V, respectively. The synthetic wastewater used in the experiments contained Cu in the 10 mg/l concentration and the electrode separation were 2, 3, 4 cm and the initial pH were 3, 6, 9, 12, and electrolytic concentration were 0.005, 0.0125, 0.025, 0.0375 mole, and the real heavymetal wastewater used in the experiments. From the experiment for removal efficiency according to pH variation, the low pH area doesn't give the coagulation effect by Ti(OH)$_4$ because process interfere with the coagulation and oxidation reaction, therefore the optimum pH was 4-7. The removal rate was 97.75% after the lapse of 30 minutes when copper concentration and electrolytic concentration were respectively 10 mg/l and 0.025 mole. The removal rate was 96.41% after the lapse of 30minutes when the real heavymetal wastewater used. The optimum consumption of power showed 27KWh/m$^3$ when copper concentration, electrolyte concentration and cell potential were respectively 10 mg/l, 0.025 mole and 50$\pm$ 1 Volt.

  • 본 연구에서는 동층류 축대칭 확산화염에서 이전까지의 화염해석 방법들을 면 밀히 고찰하여 층류 확산화염 방식의 연소문제를 해결하는데 있어서 접근이 용이하고 타당성을 가지는 화염해석 방법을 찾아내는데 있으며 매연 입자에 관한 생성및 산화모 델을 총체적으로 연결하여 실험결과와의 비교를 통해 적절한 모델인수를 결정하며 복 사효과와 열영동효과를 고려하여 화염해석과 화염내의 매연입자의 분포를 예측하는데 있다.

  • It has long been known that Jahage(紫河車) extracts of Placenta hominis are effective for immunological and vascular diseases in human body and thus, was used a major constituent of traditional oriental medicines. From full-term human placenta, we have purified a new type anticoagulant protein, PP27, using different chromatographic techniques of a phenyl TSK gel 650M column, DEAE, HA and Mono-Q columns. PP27 showed single band on SDS-PAGE with a molecular mass (Mr) of 27 kDa under denaturing conditions and a calibrated Sepharose 4B column chromatography indicated a molecular mass of 23 kDa, indicating that the value is similar to those of other PP4 enzyme reported to date. Isoelectric point of PP27 was p15.2. The protein was found to inhibit the coagulation time in a concentration-dependent manner. PP27 was acted as a vascular anticoagulant of annexin type, inhibits the blood clotting process by binding of the essential lipids in a reaction which is dependent on $Ca2^+$ ions. In the presence of $Ca2^+$ ions, PP27 combines with platelet membranes neutralizing their procoagulant effect. Coagulation triggered by the addition of thromboplastin/ lipid- mixtures is extinguished by PP27.

  • A numerical model has been proposed for a diffusion flame reactor to manufacture ultrafine $TiO_2$ powders. The model equations such as mass balance equation, the 0th, 1st, and 2nd moment equations of aerosols were considered. The phenomena such as $TiCl_4$ reaction rate, $TiO_2$ nucleation rate and the coagulation of $TiO_2$ powders were included in the aerosol dynamic equation. It is found that the $TiO_2$ particle concentration becomes higher, as the inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration and the total gas flow rate increase, and also as the flame temperature decreases. The $TiO_2$ particle size increases, as the flame temperature and the inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration increase and the total gas flow rate decreases.

  • Virus associated hemophagocytic syndrome(VAHS), a class II histiocytosis syndrome, is characterized by high fever, liver dysfunction, coagulation abnormalities, and generalized histiocytic proliferation with marked hemophagocytosis in bone marrow and lymph nodes. VAHS is associated with several viral infections including Epstein Barr virus which has a relatively high mortality rate. We report a fatal case of Epstein Barr virus associated hemophagocytic syndrome and its diagnosis by mRNA in situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction. A brief review of related literaure is also presented.
