This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Curcuma longa L. powder (CLP) on the quality characteristics of a dumpling shell. Dumpling shell samples were prepared with wheat flour and different amounts of CLP were added to them, after which their instrumental characteristics and sensory evaluation were investigated. The gelatinization temperature of the CLP-wheat flours composite increased, whereas its initial viscosity at $95^{\circ}C$, viscosity at $95^{\circ}C$ after 15 min and maximum viscosity all fell with the increasing CLP content, as measured via amylography. As increasing amounts of CLP were added, the L value decreased, whereas the a and b values increased. With regard to the textural characteristics, the CLP additive became harder, more cohesive and adhesive, and less springy. The DPPH free radical scavenging activity increased significantly as the CLP content increased (p<0.05). Overall, the dumpling shells with 3% CLP were preferred over the other samples, as tested via sensory evaluation.
The present study was undertaken to estimate the antibacterial effect of a combination of C. rhizoma, L. Flos, and P japonica (1:1:1) extracts (CLP1000) and a combination of the herbal extract mixture and dioctahedral smectite (CLPS1000) against murine salmonellosis. At the concentration of CLP1000 and CLPS1000 0.5 mg/ml, the antibacterial effect was not showed on Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium). On the other hand, the antibacterial effect against S. typhimurium was observed at the concentration of CLP1000 and CLPS1000 1.0 mg/ml. Oral administration of Smectite, CLPl000, and CLPS1000 at the dose of 10 mg/ml showed a therapeutic effect for S. typhimurium infected BALB/c mice. The mortality of Smectite, CLP1000 and CLPS1000-treated mice was 90%, 90%, and 70% at 12 days, respectively, while that of untreated mice was 100% at 9 days after a lethal dose of S. typhimurium infection. The results of our study strongly indicate that CLPS1000 has potential as an effective of salmonellosis.

The chitinase producing Lysobacter enzymogenes C-3 has previously been shown to suppress plant pathogens in vitro and in the field, but little is known of the regulation of chitinase production, or its role in antimicrobial activity and biocontrol. In this study, we isolated and characterized chitinase-defective mutants by screening the transposon mutants of L. enzymogenes C-3. These mutations disrupted genes involved in diverse functions: glucose-galactose transpoter (gluP), disulfide bond formation protein B (dsbB), Clp protease (clp), and polyamine synthase (speD). The chitinase production of the SpeD mutant was restored by the addition of exogenous spermidine or spermine to the bacterial cultures. The speD and clp mutants lost in vitro antifungal activities against plant fungal pathogens. However, the gluP and dsbB mutants showed similar antifungal activities to that of the wild-type. The growth of the mutants in nutrient rich conditions containing chitin was similar with that of the wild-type. However, growth of the speD and gluP mutants was defective in chitin minimal medium, but was observed no growth retardation in the clp and dsbB mutant on chitin minimal medium. In this study, we identified the four genes might be involved and play different role in the production of extracellular chitinase and antifungal activity in L. enzymogenes C-3.
A series of wind tunnel sectional model dynamic tests of a twin-deck bridge were conducted at the CLP Power Wind/Wave Tunnel Facility (WWTF) of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to investigate the effects of gap-width on the self-excited vibrations and the dynamic and aerodynamic characteristics of the bridge. Five 2.9 m long models with different gap-widths were fabricated and suspended in the wind tunnel to simulate a two-degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) bridge dynamic system, free to vibrate in both vertical and torsional directions. The mass, vertical frequency, and the torsional-to-vertical frequency ratio of the 2DOF systems were fixed to emphasize the effects of gap-width. A free-vibration test methodology was employed and the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) was utilized to extract the eight flutter derivatives and the modal parameters from the coupled free-decay responses. The results of the zero gap-width configuration were in reasonable agreement with the theoretical values for an ideal thin flat plate in smooth flow and the published results of models with similar cross-sections, thus validating the experimental and analytical techniques utilized in this study. The methodology was further verified by the comparison between the measured and predicted free-decay responses. A comparison of results for different gap-widths revealed that variations of the gap-width mainly affect the torsional damping property, and that the configurations with greater gap-widths show a higher torsional damping ratio and hence stronger aerodynamic stability of the bridge.

We have been derived theoretically the SER's and CLP's of Wireless ATM (WATM) cells employing an OFDM/16QAM modulation scheme in wireless channel modeled as a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel. The amount of the performance improvement of WATM- OFDM/16QAM systems adopting various coding techniques has been evaluated. In frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel, considering CLP : $10^{-3}$ as a criterion, it is observed that the performance improvement of about 14 dB is obtained in terms of $E_b/N_o$ by employing an OFDM scheme. It is also confirmed that convolutional coding technique gives better performance than the other coding techniques. Especially, when the convolutional codes are adopted to WATM-OFDM/16QAM systems, voice transmission services are sufficiently available with 5 dB of $E_b/N_o$.
Yogurt is a product of the acidic fermentation of milk, which affects the survival of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The aim of this present study was to examine the survival and acid stress response of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG to low pH environment. The survival of LAB in commercial yogurt was measured during long-term storage. The enumeration of viable cells of LAB was determined at 15-day intervals over 52-weeks at $5^{\circ}C$. L. acidophilus, L. casei, and Bifidobacterium spp. showed low viability. However, L. rhamnosus GG exhibited excellent survival throughout the refrigerated storage period. At the end of 52-weeks, L. rhamnosus GG survived 7.0 log10 CFU/mL. $F_0F_1$ ATPase activity in L. rhamnosus GG at pH 4.5 was also evaluated. The ATPase activities of the membranes were higher when exposed at pH 4.5 for 24 h. The survival of L. rhamnosus GG was attributable to the induction in $F_0F_1$ ATPase activity. In addition, the mRNA expression levels of acid stress-inducible genes at low pH were investigated by qRT-PCR. clpC and clpE genes were up-regulated after 1 h, and atpA and dnaK genes were up-regulated after 24 h of incubation at pH 4.5. These genes could enhance the survival of L. rhamnosus GG in the acidic condition. Thus, the modulation of the enzymes or genes to assist the viability of LAB in the low pH environment is thought to be important.

This study analyzes the cell loss probability of an ATM multiplexer with real time and non-real time bursty traffics. It is assumed that an ATM multiplexer with loss priority control for the analysis. The loss priority control uses the CLP Reld of cell header. For easy analysis and less computation. the multiplexed traffic of the ATM multiplexer was modeled by the MMDP. The ATM multiplexer is simulated by the MMDP/MMDP/l/K queueing system. From the above results, The connection admission of an ATM multiplexer with loss priority control is determined by the cell loss probability with low priority as well as the size of threshold buffer. Therefore, to increase the statistical multiplexing gain it will be good to utilize the loss priority control in order.
Explicit design formulae of liquid column vibration absorber (LCVA) for suppressing harmonic vibration of structures with small inherent structural damping are developed in this study. The developed design formulae are also applicable to the design of a tuned mass damper (TMD) and a tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) for damped structures under harmonic force excitation. The optimum parameters of LCVA for suppressing harmonic vibration of undamped structures are first derived. Numerical searching of the optimum parameters of tuned vibration absorber system for suppressing harmonic vibration of damped structure is conducted. Explicit formulae for these optimum parameters are then obtained by a series of curve fitting techniques. The analytical result shows that the control performance of TLCD for reducing harmonic vibration of undamped structure is always better than that of non-uniform LCVA for same mass and length ratios. As for the effects of structural damping on the optimum parameters, it is found that the optimum tuning ratio decreases and the optimum damping ratio increases as the structural damping is increased. Furthermore, the optimum head loss coefficient is inversely proportional to the amplitude of excitation force and increases as the structural damping is increased. Numerical verification of the developed explicit design expressions is also conducted and the developed expressions are demonstrated to be reasonably accurate for design purposes.
This study was conducted to investigate quality characteristics of white pan bread with Cudrania tricuspidata leaf powder having functional components. Mixograph, pH, TPA, volume, specific volume, moisture, CrumbScan, color value, sensory evaluation and shelf-life test were performed on the white pan bread with Cudrania tricuspidata leaf powder. The obtained results are as follows. Mixogram analysis results showed that the dough with Cudrania tricuspidata leaf powder was suitable for baking quality. The more Cudrania tricuspidata leaf powder was added in the dough, the higher dough pH was and the lower pH values after fermentation and of the final productwere. TPA analysis results showed that higher amounts of Cudrania tricuspidata leaf powder resulted in increased hardness, chewiness, and gumminess of the white pan bread. Volume and specific volume of white pan bread were decreased with increased amounts of Cudrania tricuspidata leaf powder. CrumbScan images showed that fineness of grain, crust thickness, and volume of the bread were significantly different depending on the amount of Cudrania tricuspidata leaf powder. While color value analysis showed that increasing the amount of Cudrania tricuspidata leaf powder resulted in low L and a values. The results of the acceptance test showed that CLP3 had better scores in the appearance and texture characteristics than the control, while taste and overall acceptance were higher in the CLP2 compared with the control. According to the results of the shelf-life test, the white pan bread with 1~2% of Cudrania tricuspidata leaf powder had a significantly lower hardness when compared with the control. It was judged that a lower amount of Cudrania tricuspidata leaf powder could help in maintaining the softness of bread crumbs. Moisture content in the white pan bread decreased with the increased amounts of Cudrania tricuspidata leaf powder, but there were no significant differences among specimens.
Chitinase-Like Proteins (CLPs) are an evolutionarily conserved protein which lose their enzymatic activity for degrading chitin macromolecules. Chitinase-3-like-1 (Chi3l1) is a type of CLP that is highly expressed in epithelial cells, macrophages, etc., and is known to have correlations with type 2 inflammation and cancer. Although the increased level of Chi3l1 in the blood was reported in various disease patients, the function of Chi3l1 in adaptive immunity has been totally unknown. Recently, we found that Chi3l1 is expressed in T cells and has a negative regulatory role in T-cell activation and proliferation. A genetic ablation study of Chi3l1 in T cells showed hyperresponsiveness to TcR stimulation, which increased proliferation and Th1 differentiation. A significant increase of $IFN{\gamma}$ signaling in Chi3l1-deficient T cells synergistically increased Th1 and CTL functions against melanoma cells in vitro and in vivo. In addition, targeted knockdown by Chi3l1 siRNA complexed with the cell-penetrating peptide dNP2, which showed decreased pulmonary melanoma metastasis with increased infiltration of Th1 and CTL in the lung. This study first suggests that Chi3l1 is a novel regulator of Th1/CTL responses and could be a target for treating cancer to increase tumor immunity.
