Aerodynamic characteristics depending on the shape of an internal motor in a small-size sirocco fan for residential ventilation have been investigated. For the aerodynamic analyses of the sirocco fan, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the shear stress transport model for turbulence closure. The flow analyses are performed on hexahedral grids using a finite-volume solver. The validation of the numerical results at steady-state is performed by comparing with experimental data for the pressure and efficiency. In order to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics depending on shape of an internal motor in a sirocco fan, the reference shape is analyzed compared to the case without internal motor. Additionally, two shape parameters, height and width of the internal motor in a sirocco fan, are tested to investigate their effects on the aerodynamic characteristics. The results show that the shape of the internal motor in a sirocco fan is an important factor to improve the aerodynamic performances.

In this study a process simulation method was used to analyze the accumulation phenomena of anionic starch in the process white water as the closure level of a fine paper making process is increased. A pilot paper machine was used as a model process. Dynamic simulations of the influence of white water usage ratio and uncoated broke addition ratio on the variation of process variable was monitored as a function of time. Results from the dynamic simulations showed that the volume of reservoirs affected the dynamic behavior of the process. The dynamic behavior of flow rate and dissolved starch concentration in process units were different from each other. The speed of the change of dissolved starch concentration in process units was depend on the starting point of the change of dissolved starch concentration, the length of circulation loop, and the volume of reservoirs.
This paper focuses on the processes of wind flow in atmospheric boundary layer, to produce realistic full scale pressures for design of low-rise buildings. CFD with LES turbulence closure is implemented on a scale 1:1 prototype building. A proximity study was executed computationally in CFD with LES that suggests new recommendations on the computational domain size, in front of a building model, apart from common RANS-based guidelines (e.g., COST and AIJ). Our findings suggest a location of the test building, different from existing guidelines, and the inflow boundary proximity influences pressure correlation and reproduction of peak loads. The CFD LES results are compared to corresponding pressures from open jet, full scale, wind tunnel, and the ASCE 7-10 standard for roof Component & Cladding design. The CFD LES shows its adequacy to produce peak pressures/loads on buildings, in agreement with field pressures, due to its capabilities of reproducing the spectral contents of the inflow at 1:1 scale.
The flow of cooling water in a passive containment cooling system (PCCS), used to remove heat released in design basis accidents from a concrete containment of light water nuclear power plant, was conducted in order to investigate the thermo-fluid equilibrium among many parallel tubes of PCCS. Numerical simulations of the subcooled boiling flow within a coolant loop of a PCCS, which will be installed in innovative pressurized-water reactor (PWR), were conducted using the commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-CFX. Shear stress transport (SST) and the RPI model were used for turbulence closure and subcooled flow boiling, respectively. As the first step, the simplified geometry of PCCS with 36 tubes was modeled in order to reduce computational resource. Even and uneven thermal loading conditions were applied at the outer walls of parallel tubes for the simulation of the coolant flow in the PCCS at the initial phase of accident. It was observed that the natural circulation maintained in single-phase for all even and uneven thermal loading cases. For uneven thermal loading cases, coolant velocity in each tube were increased according to the applied heat flux. However, the flows were mixed well in the header and natural circulation of the whole cooling loop was not affected by uneven thermal loading significantly.

A safety assessment code, called SAGE (Safety Assessment Groundwater Evaluation), has been developed to describe post-closure radionuclide releases and potential radiological doses for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste (LILW) disposal in an engineered vault facility in Korea. The conceptual model implemented in the code is focused on the release of radionuclide from a gradually degrading engineered barrier system to an underlying unsaturated zone, thence to a saturated groundwater zone. The radionuclide transport equations are solved by spatially discretizing the disposal system into a series of compartments. Mass transfer between compartments is by diffusion/dispersion and advection. In all compartments, radionuclides ate decayed either as a single-member chain or as multi-member chains. The biosphere is represented as a set of steady-state, radionuclide-specific pathway dose conversion factors that are multiplied by the appropriate release rate from the far field for each pathway. The code has the capability to treat input parameters either deterministically or probabilistically. Parameter input is achieved through a user-friendly Graphical User Interface. An application is presented, which is compared against safety assessment results from the other computer codes, to benchmark the reliability of system-level conceptual modeling of the code.
This study empirically investigates the degree of physical exclusiveness of multi-family housing estates and its socioeconomic effects. By combining various physical elements devised to blockade and control the entrance to the estate as well as housing units, it constructs the index to quantify the degree of physical exclusiveness for the multi-family housing estates of more than 300 households in Seoul. The statistics reveal that the degree of physical exclusiveness has increased over time and therefore, as a representative example, two-thirds of the estates are now equipped with barricade at the entrance, which often symbolizes 'gated community'. The estimation result of hedonic price model show that physical exclusiveness has a significant positive effect on housing price. The household survey data for the case study estates also demonstrate that the residents in the estate of higher degree of physical exclusiveness put a higher housing value on socioeconomic 'prestige' as well as 'community', beyond physical 'security', and have closer neighborhood relationship with the residents inside the estate. However, there is no significant difference in neighborhood relationship with the outside residents depending upon the degree of physical exclusiveness.

A numerical optimization procedure for the shape of three-dimensional channel with angled ribs mounted on one of the walls to enhance turbulent heat transfer is presented. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analyses of flow and heat transfer. SST turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for local heat transfer rate show reasonable agreements with experimental data. The pitch-to-height ratio of the rib and rib height-to-channel height ratio are set to be 9.0 and 0.1, respectively, and width-to-rib height ratio and attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat-transfer and friction-loss related terms with weighting factor. Full-factorial experimental design method is used to determine the data points. Optimum shapes of the channel have been obtained in the range from 0.0 to 0.1 of weighting factor.

Numerical investigation was carried out on axisymmetric over-expanded rocket nozzle to predict flow fields of transitional shock separation patterns. The unsteady, compressible N-S equations with k-$\omega$ SST for turbulence model closure were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. Computed results were in good agreement with previous experimental works. It was found that strong side-loads were generated during the transition of RSS to FSS due to the development of a vortex ring in the inviscid jet core region. Hysteresis phenomenon exhibited by the shock-separation patterns was also found during the start-up and shut-down processes.
Recent progress in the computational fluid dynamics methods of two- and multiphase phase flows has already started opening up new exciting possibilities for using complete multidimensional models to simulate boiling systems. Combining this new theoretical and computational approach with novel experimental methods should dramatically improve both our understanding of the physics of boiling and the predictive capabilities of models at various scale levels. However, for the multidimensional modeling framework to become an effective predictive tool, it must be complemented with accurate mechanistic closure laws of local boiling mechanisms. Boiling heat transfer has been studied quite extensively before. However, it turns out that the prevailing approach to the analysis of experimental data for both pool boiling and forced-convection boiling has been associated with formulating correlations which normally included several adjustable coefficients rather than based on first principle models of the underlying physical phenomena. One reason for this has been the tendency (driven by practical applications and industrial needs) to formulate single expressions which encompass a broad range of conditions and fluids. This, in turn, makes it difficult to identify various specific factors which can be independently modeled for different situations. The objective of this paper is to present a mechanistic modeling concept for both pool boiling and forced-convection boiling. The proposed approach is based on theoretical first-principle concepts, and uses a minimal number of coefficients which require calibration against experimental data. The proposed models have been validated against experimental data for water and parametrically tested. Model predictions are shown for a broad range of conditions.
Waste Isolation Pilot Plant repository releases are evaluated through the application of modified parameters to simulate accelerated creep closure, include capillary pressure effects on relative permeability, and increase brine and gas saturation in the operations and experimental (OPS/EXP) areas. The modifications to the repository model result in increased pressures and decreased brine saturations in waste areas and increased pressures and brine saturations in the OPS/EXP areas. Brine flows up the borehole during a hypothetical drilling intrusion are nearly identical and brine flows up the shaft are decreased. The modified parameters essentially halt the flow of gas from the southern waste areas to the northern nonwaste areas, except as transported through the marker beds and anhydrite layers. The combination of slightly increased waste region pressures and very slightly decreased brine saturations result in a modest increase in spallings and no significant effect on direct brine releases, with total releases from the Culebra and cutting and caving releases unaffected. Overall, the effects on total high-probability mean releases from the repository are insignificant, with total low-probability mean releases minimally increased. It is concluded that the modified OPS/EXP area parameters have an insignificant effect on the prediction of total releases.
