  • ■ Objectives This clinical report is to report the effect of Korean medicine on a patient with torticollis. ■ Methods We used herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, pharmaco-acupuncture and bee venom acupuncture to treat a torticollis patient during hospitalization and out patient department (OPD) treatment for 3months. We observed the changes of symptoms using Toronto Western Spasmodic torticollis Scale (TWSTRS). ■ Results After treatment, the patient's symptoms including torticollis, pain and the general condition were improved. The TWSTRS scores were also improved after treatment. ■ Conclusion This clinical case study suggests that Korean medicine treatment could be effective in the treatment of torticollis.

  • Ginseng shows protective and trophic effects in neurodegenerative diseases in experimental models, and showed cognitive improvement in normal population. To investigate the efficacy of ginseng in patients with Alzheimer's disease, patients, who met NINDS-ADRDA criteria for AD were studied Subjects were randomly assigned to ginseng group and control group, and ginseng group was treated with Korean white ginseng powder (4.5 g/day) for 12 weeks. Efficacy variables included changes in mini-mental status exam (MMSE) and cognitive subscales of Alzheimer's disease assessment scale (ADAS-cog) at 4 weeks and 12 weeks. Baseline MMSE and ADAS scores showed no difference between the two groups. Results showed that ginseng improved ADAS-cog compared to the control group at 12 weeks (p<0.05). MMSE was also increased by ginseng treatment compared to the control at 12 weeks (p<0.01). This study suggests the symptomatic efficacy of ginseng in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

  • Nerve conduction study (NCS) is an electrophysiological tool to assess the overall function of cranial and peripheral nervous system, therefore NCS has been diagnostically helpful in the identification and characterization of disorders involving nerve roots, peripheral nerves, muscle and neuromuscular junction, and are frequently accompanied by a needle Electromyography. Furthermore, NCS could provide valuable quantitative and qualitative results into neuromuscular function. Usually, motor, sensory, or mixed nerve studies can be performed with using NCS, stimulating the nerves with the recording electrodes placed over a distal muscle, a cutaneous sensory nerve, or the entire mixed nerve, respectively. And these findings of motor, sensory, and mixed nerve studies often show different and distinct patterns of specific abnormalities indicating the neuromuscular disorders. The purpose of this special article is to review the neurophysiologic usefulness of NCS, to outline the technical factors associated with the performance of NCS, and to demonstrate characteristic NCS changes in the setting of various neuromuscular conditions.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of Shihogayonggolmoryo-tang (SYT) in combatting excessive sweating. Methods: The electronic medical records (EMR) of patients who attended the Department of Korean Internal Medicine, Stroke and Neurological Disorders Center from December 2014 to April 2016 were reviewed. Excessive sweating was graded and compared before and after the administration of SYT in 32 patients. Results: The average grade for excessive sweating of the 32 patients significantly decreased from 2.47±0.62 to 1.03±0.86 after the SYT treatment. Conclusions: These results provide evidence that SYT may be effective in combatting excessive sweating.

  • Ramsay-Hunt syndrome is a viral disease associated with peripheral facial nerve paralysis accompany by erythematous vesicular rashs on the ear(zoster oticus) or in the mouth. Based on clinical presentations that indicated involvement of more than one ganglion, the gasserian, geniculate, petrous, accessory, jugular and second and third dorsal root ganglia comprised a chain in which inflammation of a single ganglion could extend to nearby ganglia. A 71-year-old man presented with left. peripheral facial palsy with otalgia, vesicular eruption in $V_2$, $V_3$, C2, C3 dermatome, tinnitus, and hearing loss.

  • Flail arm syndrome (FAS), known as one of the atypical amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) variants, has a similar clinical course and pathologic findings as ALS. Therefore it is difficult to differentiate between ALS and FAS at a glance. There are few reports involving individual analysis of FAS patients to date. The findings of polysomnography (PSG) in patient with FAS are not well known. We report a male FAS patient with review of literatures and several issues related to the diagnostic process.

  • The pathogenesis of many strokes originates in the vessel wall. Despite this, most traditional imaging focuses on the vascular lumen. Vessel-wall magnetic resonance imaging (VWMRI) is useful for establishing the etiology of intracranial stenosis. It also provides information regarding atherosclerotic plaque composition and thus plaque vulnerability, which is an indication of its potential to cause a stroke. In this review we focus on the characteristics of VWMRI findings in various arteriopathies related to intracranial artery stenosis, and discuss the clinical implications of these findings.

  • This case report describes the effects of Korean Medicine for the gait disturbance of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). Korean Medicine that included chuna manual therapy, pharmaco-acupuncture, herbal medicine, acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and moxibustion was administered for 23 days. During the hospitalization period, evaluations were performed using the Unified Multiple System Atrophy Rating Scale (UMSARS), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and 20 m Round Timed Walking Test on day 1, day 15, and day 23. The UMSARS Part I score decreased from 11 to 5, Part II score from 11 to 9, and total score from 22 to 14, and the BBS score increased from 36 to 48. The 20 m Round Timed Walking Test score also improved. The width of the gait decreased from 65 to 40 cm, and the number of staggering incidents decreased from 6 times to 2 times. The findings of this case study suggest that Korean Medicine, including Chuna manual therapy, has potential benefits in MSA patients with gait disturbance.

  • Objectives: Chest pain presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges because of its various etiologies. Many patients have chest pain from unknown causes and persistent chest pain in spite of standard treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a Korean herbal medicine called Pyungjinsujeom-san (PSS) in relieving chest pain. Methods: We reviewed the electronic medical records of patients who visited the Korean Medical Clinic of Cardiology at Kyunghee University Hospital at Gangdong from January 2009 to July 2019, with the chief complaint of chest pain and who were treated with PSS. The mean severity of chest pain measured on the Numerical Rating Scale was compared before and after the administration of PSS. Results: The mean severity of chest pain of 20 patients decreased significantly from 6.80±1.61 to 1.35±0.9 after taking PSS (p<0.001). Most patients had symptoms of phlegm and food retention, including indigestion, postprandial fullness, and epigastric pain. Conclusions: These results suggest that PSS may be effective in relieving chest pain from various causes, particularly in patients with symptoms of phlegm and food retention.

  • ■ Objectives The purpose of this study is to report the effectiveness of Korean medicine in the treatment of non-cardiac chest pain. ■ Methods The patient with non-cardiac chest pain was treated with herbal medicine, Insambaekhaokwanjung-tang, and Jungsongouhyul pharmacoacupuncture. The severity of symptom was assessed by daily chest pain frequency, Numerical Rating Scale(NRS) of chest pain. ■ Results After the treatment, the severity of chest pain was reduced from NRS 9 to NRS 0 and the palpitation intensity was reduced from 9 to 0. The chest pain frequency was reduced from 7 to 0. In addition, other symptoms such as anorexia, sleep disturbance, and fatigue have shown improvements. ■ Conclusion The findings of this study suggests that treatment with Korean medicine can be an effective option in treating non cardiac chest pain.
