Objective: This study aimed at providing preliminary data useful in reducing participant dropout and improving the quality of clinical trials, by analyzing the factors related to dropout. Methods: The data came from 15 acupuncture and/or moxibustion clinical trials (n=638; August 2005 to December 2009). Logistic regression analysis was used to reveal factors influencing participant dropout. Results: Gender, age, treatment method (intervention), treatment frequency, availability of follow-up, and presence of compensation treatment for the control group were factors influencing participant dropout. Conclusion: Subsequent studies of large-scale acupuncture and moxibustion clinical trials should address dropout factors that consider the character of each clinical trial, or general characters like participants' gender, age, occupation, and diverse diseases.
Purpose: This study investigated how powerlessness of nursing students influenced their clinical practice satisfaction and nursing image, and how clinical practice satisfaction mediates the relationship between powerlessness and nursing image. Methods: A descriptive research design was used. Data were collected from 107 junior nursing students. Data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 12.0. Results: Powerlessness and clinical practice satisfaction influenced nursing image. Clinical practice satisfaction provided complete mediation between powerlessness and nursing image. Objective: To develop and test a machine learning model for classifying human papillomavirus (HPV) status of patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET-derived parameters in derived parameters and an appropriate combination of machine learning methods in patients with OPSCC. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 126 patients (118 male; mean age, 60 years) with newly diagnosed, pathologically confirmed OPSCC, that underwent 18F-FDG PET-computed tomography (CT) between January 2012 and February 2020. Patients were randomly assigned to training and internal validation sets in a 7:3 ratio. An external test set of 19 patients (16 male; mean age, 65.3 years) was recruited sequentially from two other tertiary hospitals. Model 1 used only PET parameters, Model 2 used only clinical features, and Model 3 used both PET and clinical parameters. Multiple feature transforms, feature selection, oversampling, and training models are all investigated. The external test set was used to test the three models that performed best in the internal validation set. The values for area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were compared between models. Results: In the external test set, ExtraTrees-based Model 3, which uses two PET-derived parameters and three clinical features, with a combination of MinMaxScaler, mutual information selection, and adaptive synthetic sampling approach, showed the best performance (AUC = 0.78; 95% confidence interval, 0.46-1). Model 3 outperformed Model 1 using PET parameters alone (AUC = 0.48, p = 0.047) and Model 2 using clinical parameters alone (AUC = 0.52, p = 0.142) in predicting HPV status. Conclusion: Using oversampling and mutual information selection, an ExtraTree-based HPV status classifier was developed by combining metabolic parameters derived from 18F-FDG PET/CT and clinical parameters in OPSCC, which exhibited higher performance than the models using either PET or clinical parameters alone.

Objectives: Effective data collection and surveillance of epidemiological trends are essential in confronting the growing challenges associated with substance use (SU), especially in light of emerging trends and underreporting of cases. However, research and data are scarce regarding SU and substance use disorder (SUD) in Korea. Methods: We conducted a scoping review to identify data sources and surveillance methods used in SU research in Korea up to December 2023. This review was complemented by semi-structured consultations with experts in this area in Korea, whose feedback led to revisions of previously identified data sources and assessments. Results: Our review identified 32 publications conducting secondary analyses on existing data to examine the epidemiology of SU and SUD in Korea. Of these, 14 studies utilized clinical databases to explore the prescription patterns of addictive substances, particularly opioids. Eleven data sources showed promise for advancing SU research; however, they face substantial limitations, including a lack of available data, missing data, the absence of key variables, the exclusion of marginalized populations not captured within the clinical system, and complexities in matching individual-level data across time points and datasets. Conclusions: Current surveillance methods for SU in Korea face considerable challenges in accessibility, usability, and standardization. Moreover, existing data repositories may fail to capture information on populations not served by clinical or judicial systems. To systematically improve surveillance approaches, it is necessary to develop a robust and nationally representative survey, refine the use of existing clinical data, and ensure the availability of data on treatment facilities.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to understand and describe difficulties and needs experienced by head nurses in the clinical practice education of nursing students. Methods: A qualitative descriptive method was employed. A convenience sampling method was used to recruit participants from four hospitals in South Korea. Twenty-one head nurses participated in the first interview and 17 of them participated in the second interview. Data were collected through two in-depth interviews and field notes were written. Qualitative content analysis method was utilized for data analysis using ATLAS.ti 6.2 software. Results: Thirty-one codes and twelve categories were identified. Four themes emerged from data analysis, which included 'too many tasks', 'limitations of student education', 'many differences', and 'lack of support and resources.' Conclusion: This qualitative study described head nurses' many difficulties and needs in the clinical practice education of nursing students. The results of this study provide valuable understanding and knowledge of head nurses' experiences in students' clinical education, which leads to improvement of the quality of clinical education for nursing students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test a model of nursing competencies of nursing simulation learners. The conceptual model was based on the theory of Jeffries's simulaton theory. Methods: Data collection was conducted in October 2017 for 310 students from two nursing universities in Kyungbuk area for 20 days. Data analysis methods were covariance structure analysis using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 22.0 statistical programs. Results: The hypothetical model was a good fit for the data. The model fit indices were comparative fit index=.97, normed fit index=.94, Tucker-Lewis Index=.97, root mean square error of approximation=.44, and standardized root mean square residual=.04. Teacher factors were directly related to simulation design characteristics, and it was confirmed that the curriculum, classroom operation and teaching method of the instructors were important factors. Learner factors were found to have a direct effect on nursing competence, self-confidence, and clinical performance that belong to nursing capacity. In particular, the results of this study indicate that the simulation design characteristics have a partial mediating effect on learner factors and clinical performance, and a complete mediating effect on learner factors and clinical judgment ability. Conclusion: In order to improve the learner's clinical performance and clinical judgment ability, it is necessary to conduct practical training through nursing simulation besides preparing the learner and the educator.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine nurses' critical thinking disposition and knowledge sharing activity and professional work environment on clinical decision-making ability. Methods: The data collection period for this study was from May 24 to May 31, 2021. The data were collected from 167 nurses who consented to participate in this study and have worked for more than one year at general hospital in Seoul. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. Results: A significant positive correlation was found between clinical decision-making ability and critical thinking disposition, knowledge sharing activity, and a professional work environment. Critical thinking disposition (β=.32, p<.001), knowledge sharing activitiy (β=.24, p=.002) and professional work environment (β=.20, p=.006) had a significant effect on clinical decision-making ability. These factors explained 35.5% of clinical decision-making ability (F=24.22, p<.001). Conclusion: Therefore, in order to develop the critical thinking disposition of nurses, development of systematic educational programs and strategies for practical application are needed. Through this, nurses can improve the professional decision-making ability and clinical performance ability.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of needs for professional development and organizational climate on organizational socialization of clinical nurses. A cross-sectional analysis were performed to assess the factors affecting organizational socialization. Methods: The data used in this study were obtained from clinical nurses who were employed in a hospital (N=606). Using multiple regression, we tested variables to assess their effects on organizational socialization in this sample. The data were analyzed using descriptive test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficiency and stepwise multivariate regression. SPSS 17.0 program was utilized for data analysis. Results: The mean scores of organizational socialization, needs for professional development and organizational climate were statistically differed by career ladder, educational level and position. Organizational socialization had significant positive correlations with the needs for professional development (r=.332, p<.01) and organizational climate (r=.523, p<.01). Those variables including career ladder explained 33.4% of organizational socialization. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that organizational socialization of clinical nurses could be enhanced by meeting the needs for professional development and organizational climate. Developing innovative educations for encouraging clinical nurses' carrier development and creating a positive organizational climate are mandated for clinical nurses to have constructive organizational socialization.

Background/Aims: Situs inversus viscerum (SIV) is a congenital condition defined by left-to-right transposition of all visceral organs. This anatomical variant has caused technical challenges in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Data on ERCP in patients with SIV are limited to case reports of unknown clinical and technical success rates. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and technical success rates of ERCP in patients with SIV. Methods: Data from patients with SIV who underwent ERCP were retrospectively reviewed. The data were collected by querying the nationwide Veterans Affairs Health System database for patients diagnosed with SIV who underwent ERCP. Patient demographics and procedural characteristics were collected. Results: Eight patients with SIV who underwent ERCP were included. Choledocholithiasis was the most common indication for ERCP (62.5%). The technical success rate was 63%. Subsequent ERCP with interventional radiology-assisted rendezvous has increased the technical success rate to 100%. Clinical success was achieved in 63% of cases. Among cases of subsequent rendezvous ERCP after conventional ERCP failure, clinical success was achieved in 100%. Conclusions: The clinical and technical success rates of ERCP in patients with SIV were both 63%. In patients with SIV in whom ERCP fails, interventional radiology-assisted rendezvous ERCP can be considered.

This study is to understand and to explain how nursing students experience in the clinical nursing practice using grounded theory approach. Ten nursing students were participated in the study. Seven of them were junior students at the junior college of nursing, and the rest were the senior students at the university. The data were collected by in-depth individual interviews by investigators during May and June in 1995. The results of the study were as follows ; Twenty-eight concepts and 9 categories were emerged by the constant comparative analysis. The 9 categories include 'the need of role model', 'non-educational practical setting', 'knowledge deficit', 'emotional changes', 'the attitudes of clinical practice', 'fatigue', 'skepticism', 'pride', and 'the product of clinical practice'. The core category which encompasses all 9 categories was emerged as 'the process of formulating the nursing view'. Five hypotheses were derived from the analysis. 1) The desirable role model would enhance to pride of nursing in students. 2) Non-educational practical setting would increase skepticism of nursing in students. 3) Knowledge deficit would negatively affect on experience of clinical practice. 4) The pride of clinical practice would formulate a positive nursing view. 5) The skepticism of clinical practice would formulate a negative nursing view. The results of this study are to use as basic data for students attending clinical experience.
