The purpose of present study is to investigate children's attitude toward reading, reading method, reading environment, reading volume, and then to compare the results obtained by sex, area and grade. The tool used in this survey was a questionaire designed specially by the investigator. The questionaire was distributed to 1339 children selected at the descretion of the investigator with due consideration of sex, area(large city, medium city and rural community) and grade (from 2nd grade of primary school to 2nd year of middle school). The results of this study are summerized as follows : 1) Regional difference was observed in respect of the followiug : Awareness on reading, motivation for reading, reading method, activity after reading, number of books collected, reading guidance, how to obtain books to read, monthly reading volume, and reading tendency. 2) Also difference by grade was observed in respcet of the following ; Activity after reading, reading guidance, monthly reading volume and reading tendency. The following conclusions have been made based on the results of the survey: 1) The children's attitude toward reading and reading method may be considered favorable while reading environment is not satisfactory yet. Especially, reading environment of school children in medium cities and rural communities is worse than that of large cities. 2) No difference by sex was observed in respect of attitudes toward reading, reading method, reading environment and reading volume while difference by sex was observed in respect of reading tendency. The followings are recommended based on the results of survey: 1) To establish and carry out a comprehensive program for the improvement of reading environment of the school children in medium cities and rural communities. 2) To improve and substantiate school library facilities and design a proper guidance program to have children utilize school library to the maximum extent. 3) To contemplate on the consolidated measures for reading behavior survey.
This study examined the relation between children's interpersonal problem solving strategies and their temperament. Two hundred and fifty nine children of the 3rd and the 5th grades were chosen from 3 elementary schools as the subjects. Data from two hundreds and six children were analysed. Alternative problem solving strategies as one of children's interpersonal problem solving strategies and their temperament were analysed according to their grade, sex, and the target persons. Children showed age and sex differences in using strategies; the 3rd graders used more solutions than the 5th graders in affirmative strategies and the girls used more solutions than the boys in affirmative strategies, but showed no differences in using negative strategies. In temperament, the 3rd graders were higher in Persistence than the 5th graders, the boys were higher in activity and the girls were higher in mood. Temperament of the children had relations with their using alternative problem solving strategies when the target persons were peers or teachers but not mothers. Persistence and mood, which are the subcategories of temperament had relations with affirmative strategies for the 3rd graders.
Emotional expressiveness is a pathway by which parents affect the emotional competence of their children. This study examined how the emotional expressiveness of parents is influenced by the emotional reactions of their children and demographic characteristics within a family context. Data for the present study were from 200 parents in 100 two-parent families who completed self-report questionnaires for emotional expressiveness, children's emotional reactions to stressful situations, and demographics. In preliminary analyses, mothers expressed emotions more frequently than fathers did, and mothers with high expressiveness of positive emotions were more educated and had higher family income. Although fathers' emotional expressiveness was closely related to mothers' expressiveness, none of the demographic factors were related to fathers' expressiveness. When all predictors were considered in hierarchical multiple regressions, family income was the significant predictor for mothers' positive expressiveness, whereas mothers' negative expressiveness were explained by children's emotional reactions, mother education, child sex, the number of siblings, fathers' education, and mothers' time spent with children. When controlled for mothers' expressiveness, fathers' time spent with children was the only significant predictor for fathers' negative expressiveness. The results of this study suggested that parents' emotional expressiveness varied with socioeconomic status. The discussion also examines the gender differences between mothers and fathers in emotional expressiveness, and their relations to children's sex.
This study examined the relationship between kindergarten children's maternal attachment and their social competence. A total of 76 kindergarteners and their mothers were observed and videotaped in a strange situation. The modified ISCS(Iowa Social Competency Scales: Preschool Form) was administered to 76 mothers to assess their children's social competence. The data were analyzed by percentiles, Pearson's correlations, and t-test. The results showed a significant correlations between children's social competence and attachment to their mothers. Significant sex and sibling status differences in attachment were found. Social competence differed by demographic variables of sex, sibling status, and level of father's education.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the direction and strategy of education for sex role concepts of children on the basis of factor analysis of the present situation in sex role concepts and their formation. Although some maintain that sex role concept of our society has been changing slowly, the traditional sex role concept still dominates and is potentially immanent. the analysis of present condition of our society indicates that the formal as well as informal education are facing with various crucial problems in providing the direction of behavior demanded for carrying out the role. The close analysis of the three theories, psychoanalytic theory , social learning theory, cognitive development theory, lends a support to the laim of the study that cognitive development theory provide an integrated frame of reference for us to see the sex role education analytically Furthermore, the factors which are found to have influences on the formation of sex role have been analyzed in three areas: Family, School and society. 1)The factors in family such as parental behavior of upbringing and their concepts of sex role have a direct relationship with the nature of sex tole concept of children. Therefore, the first step to make children to habe a new type of sex-role conception appropriate for modern societies is to change that of parental conception and attitudes. 2)the quantitative as well as the qualitative aspects of school education showed no exceptional trend from the dominant conception of the society, although school are expected to lead the society as formal education institution rather than just reflect the society. The educational activities and contents such as the conceived goal of education for eoch sex, textbook constitation, teaching behavior and sex-role concepts of teacher are found to be still dominated by the traditional sex-role assumption. 3) The social factors that have direct relationship with children's sex-role formation are social and cultural, which include social milieu, condition of employment, family structure and mass-media. Since family and school do not educate the young in a social vacuum. their educational function of sex-role formation are doomed to be limited and determined by these social factors. Unfortunately, the analysis of present conditions showed the dominance of traditional types of sex-role concepts in all these social factors. The education of sex-role concept for children should be treated as one of the most crucial value problems related with many other important problems, such as direction and patterns of behaviors of each sex, the degree of self-development and capabilities, and consequently human right, equality, humanization and the quality of happiness. Neverthless, the analysis of researches on sex-role education which have been surveyed in this study lead to a conclusion that concerted effort to change the education, formal as well as informal should be provided in every aspect of social life. If the sex role education of the past has aimed at the "feminization"of girls which indoctrinate girls into a limited and fixed role of house wives, the new education in the future should be directed foward "humanization" of both sexes which opens the diversity of roles for both boys and girl on equal levels and provide future possibilities in accordance to their individual capabilities and interests.
The Purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions of rural housewife's sex role attitude, the value consciousness of home management and the satisfaction of household work. Further, basic data for the improvement of the satisfaction of household work and the value consciouseness of home management will be produce through grasping the relationship of them. For these purposes, the data were collected by using questionnaire distributed to 292 housewives living in Cheong Song. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, One Way Anova, Pearson's Correlation analysis and Multiple Regression analysis. The results of the research were as follows : 1. Rural housewife's sex role attitude comparatively took the transitional position and the value consciousness of home management was modernized. Housewife's satisfaction of household work was generally usual. 2. There were significant differences in the sex role attitude according to the type of housing. 3. The value consciousness of home management of rural housewives was variable according to housewife's occupation, husband's occupation and the type of housing. 4. Among the independent variables, the number of family member, the number of children and family style. 5. There were significant differences in the satisfaction of household work according to housewife's sex role attitude. 6. Among the independent variables, the number of children, monthly family income, the sex role attitude, the value consciousness about household work, education and leadership had significant influence on the satisfaction of household work.
This study intends to investigate preschool-sibling's spontaneous imitation during their free-plays through the observation of 41 pairs of siblings aged from 1 to seven years. RESULTS : 1. Sibling's imitation showed in all subjects and had various distribution according to sibling's personalities. 2. Because of sibling's several facts. Their imitation showed differently. 1) Imitation appeared to decline to decline as children grew older. Imitation showed most frequently at the age of 2 years, and decreased after that. 2) Due to the effect of birth-order, the younger one showed his imitation approximately 4.3 times more than the elder one. 3) The effect of sex-composition seemed to coincide with the sex-typing hypothesis rather than the like-sex hypothesis. 4) Boy's imitation showed more frequently than girl's, but the difference was not so significant to be noticed. 3. In siblings, physical imitation was more frequent than verbal imitation, but it was reversed in peer's imitation. 4. The play-situation in which sibling's imitation showed mostly differed from that of Peer's imitation. That is, sibling's imitation appeared in solitary play but peers imitation did appear in associate play.
The purpose of this study was to investigate young children's play preferences through observation at their classrooms and to examine the relationship between children's play preferences and their peer competence and peer acceptance. The subjects were 55 four-year-old children from a kindergarten in C city of Chungnam province. The data was analyzed by MANOVA, t-test, and Pearson's correlation. The results were as follows: first, boys and girls showed different play preferences except for language play and science play. Boys were better liked by same-sex peers while girls were better liked by other-sex peers. Second, there were significant correlations among certain play preferences. Block play preferences were negatively correlated with other play preferences. Third, some play preferences were significantly associated with some sub-dimensions of peer competence. Language play displayed a positive relationship to pro-social behavior, but art play showed a negative relationship to leadership. Finally, peer acceptance was positively correlated only with number/manipulation play preferences. Other-sex peer acceptance was positively correlated with number/manipulation play preferences and art play preferences but negatively with block play preferences.

This study aimed to identify the effects of mothers' variables and present children's variables on subsequent childbirth plan and to explore predictors of subsequent childbirth plan for non-employed and employed mothers. The subjects were 1,635 mothers participating in the Panel Study on Korean Children from 2008 to 2010 and having no subsequent children until 2010 after giving birth to children in 2008. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t test, ${\chi}^2$ test, and decision tree analysis. The main results of this study were as follows. Firstly, mothers' child-rearing stresses, child value, marital satisfaction, social support, present children's birth order and sex influenced mothers' subsequent childbirth plans, whereas mothers' average family income per month did not. Secondly, in the case of non-employed mothers, their present children's birth order and sex, and mothers' child value predicted their subsequent childbirth plan. Specifically, mothers whose present children's birth order and sex was first and female had the highest possibilities of subsequent childbirth plan, followed by mothers whose present children's birth order and sex was first and male, and child value was higher. Thirdly, in the case of employed mothers, their present children's birth order and mothers' marital satisfaction predicted their subsequent childbirth plan. Specifically, mothers whose present children' birth order was first and marital satisfaction was higher had the highest possibilities of subsequent childbirth plan. Finally, the study suggested the role of Home Economics Education in raising the rate of subsequent childbirth.
The Purpose of this study was to examine how children's perceptuions of parental childrearing behaviors and family support were related to their interpersonal problem-solving behaviors. 580 subjects of the 5th 6th grades filled out questionnaires concerning the three research variables. The data were analyzed through correlation analyses and regression analyses. The results were as follows: The significant correlations were found between parental warmth·acceptance and children's interpersonal problem-solving behavior and between family support and problem-solving behaviors. Problem-solving behaviors showed higher correlations with maternal warmths·acceptance than paternal behaviors and with opposite-sex parents behaviors than with same-sex parents behaviors. Family support predicted children's social problem-solving behaviors better than parental warmth·acceptance especially among boys.
