Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a child-parent secondhand smoke(SHS) prevention program(C-PSHSPP). Methods: The participants were parents whose children were attending daycare centers located in S city. The institutions were selected using two-stage cluster sampling and data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were performed using SPSS version 18.0. Results: Number of cigarettes smoked per day, rate of smoking when with child decreased significantly. Parental awareness on SHS and scores on changes of experiential process increased significantly. Conclusions: From these results, it is suggested that the C-PSHSPP has beneficial effects in decreasing parental daily smoking amount at the same time increasing parental awareness on SHS and importance of smoking cessation. Therefore, C-PSHSPP can be recommended as a SHS intervention program for preschool children.
Purpose: In this study the effects of a self-growth program on self-esteem, inferiority and peer-relationships in children using a community child center were examined. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used. Data were collected from August 26 to October 9, 2008. To test the effects of the self-growth program, the children were divided into two groups, an experimental group (28) and a control group (25). The self-growth program was used with the children in the experimental group. Results: The self-growth program effectively increased the self-esteem scores, and the peer-relationships scores of the children, and decreased the inferiority scores. Conclusion: The results suggest that the self-growth program is a useful nursing intervention for improving self-esteem, decreasing inferiority, and positively affecting peer-relationships in these children.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop health education program components for early childhood and to investigate teachers' awareness of the importance of health education and their performance rate of health education. Methods: Early childhood health education program components were developed using two rounds of the Delphi method. The Delphi group consisted of 21 experts in childhood education. After health education program components were developed, they were used in surveying child care teachers' awareness of importance and performance rate and 151 teachers sampled from 30 child care centers participated in the survey. Results: The early childhood health education program components consisted of 5 areas, 16 subjects and 33 specific contents. Early childhood teachers' awareness of importance was over 4.5 points in all the areas and in 11 out of the 16 subjects. The most frequently educated subjects were 'the importance of hand washing' and the least frequently educated subject was 'obesity prevention'. The teachers' awareness of importance and their performance rate of specific contents were high in 'maintaining order' and 'using children's rides safely,' and low in 'obesity prevention' and 'infectious disease prevention.' Conclusion: The components of this health program were developed in consideration of field feasibility and the relationship of health program education in elementary, middle and high school.

Background: This study explored perspectives of health-care providers on childhood cancer treatment in Kenya. Materials and Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 104 health-care providers in January and February 2013. Results: Seventy six percent of the health-care providers believed cancer to be curable. More doctors than other health-care providers had this positive opinion (p=0.037). The majority of health-care providers (92%) believed that most children with cancer will not be able to finish their treatment due to financial difficulties. They considered that prosperous highly-educated parents adhere better with treatment (88%) and that doctors adhere better with treatment for prosperous highly-educated parents (79%). According to 74% of health-care providers, quality of care is better for prosperous highly-educated parents (74%). Most health-care providers reported giving more explanation (71%), work with greater accuracy (70%) and use less difficult vocabulary (55%) to prosperous more educated families. Only 34% of health-care providers reported they feel more empathy towards patients from prosperous families. Reasons for non-adherence with the protocol according to health-care providers are: family refuses drugs (85%), inadequate supply of drugs at pharmacy (79%), child looks ill (75%), and financial difficulties of parents (69%). Conclusions: Health-care providers' health beliefs and attitudes differ for patients with families having high versus low socio-economic backgrounds.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of oral health education on oral health knowledge, oral health behavior, and oral hygiene status of children from North Korea. Methods: Participants were 32 North Korean children defectors (15 in the education group, 17 in the control group). The oral health education program, including theoretical training and toothbrush training, was done once a week for 4 weeks. Effects of the education program were assessed for oral health knowledge, oral health behavior, and oral hygiene status at pretest, 0, and 4 weeks after the intervention. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANCOVA with the SAS program. Results: Children in the education group showed increased oral health knowledge and behavior over time compared to the control group and an improvement in oral hygiene status including significantly decreased S-PHP and Snyder test for oral micro-organism. Conclusion: Results indicate that oral health education is effective in improving oral health knowledge, oral health behavior and oral hygiene status. These improvements could lead to a better quality of life for North Korean children defectors.

Method: Data was collected through self-report questionnaires in which perceived maternal child rearing behaviors and internet addiction. This study population was comprised of 668 students who enrolled 4~6 year-grade in Kwangwon-Do. The data collected was analyzed by the SPSS program. Results: The level of internet addiction of subjects was rather low. Of the children, 88.2% reported being average on-line users, 7.3%, heavy on-line users, and 4.5%, internet addicted. Gender, existence of father, mother's attitude when child overuse on-line, average playing time of on-line per day, frequency of on-line visits per week and purpose of on-line use for average on-line users were different from that of heavy on-line users. The level of perceived maternal child rearing behaviors were abbreviate positively correlated to the level of internet addiction in subjects. Conclusion: We suggest these results be used to develop a internet addiction prevention program.
Purpose: In an attempt to develop a parental health improvement education program for day care children, survey questions were devised to measured the extent of parental health knowledge, health-guidance execution and needs. Method: Participants were 727 parents whose children attended daycare centers in J province informed consent was provided prior to participation. Result: Respondents were overwhelmingly (91.6%) mothers. Questions with high percentage of incorrect answers were "What should I do if my child swallows harmful drugs, bleach or detergents?" (98.1%) and "What should I do if insects or other bugs enter my child's ear?" (96.6%). In most cases, parental health-guidance execution exceeded 90% except in response to the survey question "Does your child have a dental check-up every 6 months" (51%). Taken together, parental education is necessary concerning growth and development (12.8%), nutrition (12.1%), healthy life styles (10.3%) and general health issues (10.0%). This study aims to 1) develop the Secondhand Smoke prevention program using project approach program for young children aged 4 to 5 years, 2) estimate the influence of project approach program on the prevention of their secondhand smoke, and 3) suggest effective strategies to ultimately encourage a smoke-free environment for them. The participants of an experimental group included a total of 64 preschoolers (42 boys and 22 girls) from one child-care center in Gyeonggi province. The sample of a controlled group was 49 preschoolers (30 boys and 19 girls) from one child-care center in Daegu province. Before and after experiencing project approach program on the prevention of secondhand smoke, each of them was asked to respond to such questions as recognition, attitude, and coping behavior of secondhand smoke. It has revealed that, after the program, those in the experimental group showed greater degree of recognition, more negative attitude, and more active coping behavior of secondhand smoke than those in the controlled group.
Purpose: This study was done to develop and test the effectiveness in late school-aged children of a healthy lifestyle education program for cancer prevention. Methods: Participants were 26 students in the sixth grade of N elementary school in J City (experimental group) and 25 students in the sixth grade of D elementary school with same educational conditions (control group). The research design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Data collection and execution of the study were carried out from March 10 to May 19, 2011. For the experimental treatment, 7 weekly sessions of the healthy lifestyle education program for cancer prevention were given by the researcher. Posttest was done immediately following the conclusion of the program and 4 weeks later. Frequencies, percentages, ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, repeated measures ANOVA and paired t-test with SPSS WIN 18.0 were used to analyze the data. Results: Perceived barriers, perceived self-efficacy, activity related effect and family support significantly influenced cancer prevention knowledge and increases in healthy life styles. Conclusion: Results indicate that, as this program for cancer prevention was effective in increasing healthy lifestyle practices in these children, there is a need to further develop, test and implement programs in all schools.
