  • Gasoline Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion is a new combustion concept. Unlike the conventional internal combustion engine, the premixed fuel mixture with high residual gas rate is auto-ignited and burned without flame propagation. There are several operating factors which affect HCCI combustion such as start of combustion (SOC), residual gas fraction, engine rpm, etc. Among these factors SOC is a critical factor in the combustion because it affects exhaust gas emissions, engine power, fuel economy and combustion characteristics. Therefore SOC of gasoline HCCI should be controlled precisely, and SOC detection should be preceded SOC control. This paper presents a control oriented SOC detection method using 50 percent normalized difference pressure. Normalized difference pressure is defined as the normalized value of difference pressure and difference pressure is difference between the in-cylinder firing pressure and the motoring pressure. These methods were verified through the HCCI combustion experiments. The SOC detection method using difference pressure provides a fast and precise SOC detection.

  • We report numerical simulations to investigate of the dependence of the on/off current ratio and channel charge distributions in silicon nanowire (SiNW) field-effect transistors (FETs) on the channel width and thicknesses. In order to investigate the transport behavior in devices with different channel geometries, we have performed detailed two-dimensional simulations of SiNWFETs and control FETs with a fixed channel length L of 10um, but varying the channel width W from 5nm to 5um, and thickness t from 10nm to 30nm. We have shown that $Q_{ON}/Q_{OFF}$ drastically decreases (from ${\sim}2.9{\times}10^4$ to ${\sim}9.8{\times}10^3$) as the channel thickness increases (from 10nm to 30nm). As a result of the simulation using a quantum model, even higher charge density in the bottom of SiNW channel was observed than that in the bottom of control channel.

  • This paper proposes a State-of-Charge (SOC) balancing control of Battery Power Modules (BPMs) for a modularized battery for Electric Vehicles (EVs) without additional balancing circuits. The BPMs are substituted with the single converter in EVs located between the battery and the inverter. The BPM is composed of a two-phase interleaved boost converter with battery modules. The discharge current of each battery module can be controlled individually by using the BPM to achieve a balanced state as well as increased utilization of the battery capacity. Also, an SOC balancing method is proposed to reduce the equalization time, which satisfies the regulation of a constant DC-link voltage and a demand of the output power. The proposed system and the SOC balancing method are verified through simulation and experiment.

  • 발파에서 특정한 방향으로 균열 성장을 제어하는데 장약공 노치가 유효하다는 연구결과가 발표되어오고 있다. 본 연구에서는 장약공의 노치가 파단면 형성에 미치는 영향을 살펴보기 위하여 일반 장약공과 노치 장약공에 의한 파단면의 표면을 비교하였다. 암석시편에 노치를 형성하기 위하여 노치비트시스템이 적용되었다. 파단면의 표면은 디지털 영상 계측법을 적용하여 DEM 모델로 재구성하고, 표면 거칠기 지수를 사용하여 파단면의 거칠기를 평가하였다.

EFFECT OF MIXTURE PREPARATION IN A DIESEL HCCI ENGINE USING EARLY IN-CYLINDER INJECTION DURING THE SUCTION STROKE

  • It is becoming increasingly difficult for engines using conventional fuels and combustion techniques to meet stringent emission norms. The homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) concept is being evaluated on account of its potential to control both smoke and NOx emissions. However, HCCI engines face problems of combustion control. In this work, a single cylinder water-cooled diesel engine was operated in the HCCI mode. Diesel was injected during the suction stroke($0^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$ degrees aTDC) using a special injection system in order to prepare a nearly homogeneous charge. The engine was able to develop a BMEP(brake mean effective pressure) in the range of 2.15 to 4.32 bar. Extremely low levels of NOx emissions were observed. Though the engine operation was steady, poor brake thermal efficiency(30% lower) and high HC, CO and smoke were problems. The heat release showed two distinct portions: cool flame followed by the main heat release. The low heat release rates were found to result in poor brake thermal efficiency at light loads. At high brake power outputs, improper combustion phasing was the problem. Fuel deposited on the walls was responsible for increased HC and smoke emissions. On the whole, proper combustion phasing and a need for a well- matched injection system were identified as the important needs.

  • Ti 확산 리튬나오베이트 채널 광도파로의 z-축 분극을 주기적으로 $180^{\circ}$ 위상 변화시키는 Ti:PPLN 제작 공정을 검토하고, 개선하였다. 분극반전 공정에 적합한 지그와 Labview 프로그램을 이용하여 전하량 제어시스템을 고안하였다. 분극반전에 필요한 전하량으로부터 분극에 적절한 고전압 펄스와 duty-cycle을 조절하였으며, 분극에 필요한 임계 전압 보다 작은 전압을 인가한 상태에서 누설전류의 변화를 관찰하여 절연파괴 현상을 또한 최소화하였다.

중국의 오염저감 정책이 이산화황 배출에 미치는 영향 분석 (An Analysis of the Impact of China's Pollution Reduction Policy on Sulfur Dioxide Emissions)

  • This study analyzed the effectiveness of China's policy to reduce of sulfur dioxide. China's $12^{th}$ Five-year plan on national economic and social development emphasized environmental protection and low-carbon economic development. Sulfur dioxide was one of the major gases to affect air pollution and climate change and its control became a key policy agenda in the environment and energy sector. As the absolute amount of sulfur dioxide emissions in China came from the industrial sector, the control of the coal-based energy was especially urgent. This study analyzed the factors that influenced the sulfur dioxide emissions and the policy effects to reduce sulfur dioxide in China from 2003 to 2012 based on regional data. The air pollution treatment investments showed the biggest impact together with energy conservation policy in reducing sulfur dioxide emissions. However, pollutant emissions charge did not show a relevant policy effectiveness in all regions as the amount of charge would be smaller than economic benefit from non-compliance. Rationalizing pollutant emissions charge is, therefore, a key policy task for further reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions.

  • Closed form solution of nonlinear 2-DEG concentration formula is proposed. This allows us to model continuous 2-DEG charge concentration as the function of gate voltage covering subthreshold region of the I-V curves. Comparisons of the Ids-Vgs characteristics and transconductance with the measured data were performed to show the accuracy of the proposed model. This way we have completely closed form I-V characteristics in subthreshold, triode and saturation region incorporating accurate charge control mechanism for HEMTs.

  • Polymer solar cells utilize bulk heterojunction (BHJ) type photo-active layer in which the electron donating polymer and electron accepting $C_{60}$ derivatives are blended. We found there is significant charge recombination at the interface between the BHJ active layer and electrode. The charge recombination at the interface was effectively reduced by inserting wide band gap inorganic interfacial layer, which resulted in efficiency and stability enhancement of BHJ polymer solar cell.
